Classic Game Room reviews AH-3 THUNDERSTRIKE for Sega CD (Mega CD), a rockin' helicopter action flight game where you blow up enemies with a super-helicopter loaded with machine guns, rockets and missiles!! Lay waste to bad guys, tanks, SAM batteries, choppers, trucks, subs, boats, trees and buildings as you destroy everything in the name of guitar solos, hair metal and rock n' roll!! (known as Thunderhawk in Europe)
"BANISHED FROM EARTH, CLASSIC GAME ROOM BROADCASTS..."
My day is not complete without hearing those words.
Zoe Papillon
Lol yeah. Im from germany and needed at least 15 videos to fully understand what the hell he is saying. But now i quote it everytime. ^^
This started life as a cartridge title.
Thanks to Sarah Avory for the information
Megadrive version of Thunderhawk looked the same as the Amiga version, and ran just as fast. In fact, it took me just 1 day to port a working version of the 3D engine from Amiga to Megadrive. Would've like to have finished the project, but then Mega-CD came along and so the project was shelved.
Spent so many hours on this games as a kid, the music pulled you in big time. One of the most fun I have still had with a game to date.
I love it when Mark reviews Mega CD games, mainly because it's one of my favourite game consoles. I actually brought a copy of Thunderstrike (or Thunderhawk it's called outside of the USA) off ebay after watching this review.
One of my favorite Sega CD games. Couldn't stop playing this
Graphics and sound are damned impressive for a game from 1993!
this game runs so smooth. Crazy to think it's on a 16 bit system. Love it!
This game rules! One of the best 16-bit games ever.
This is Thunderhawk in pal version! I love this game!
I used to have this one when I was a wee lad. It wasn't my favorite game on Sega CD (that honor goes to Sonic CD and Lunar), but it was great fun and I loved that rockin' opening theme. The scaling and rotation was also mind-blowing to young me although even then I kept wondering about the lack of story with "Why am I in this helicopter and fighting all these people around the world? OH screw it INCOMING MISSLE LOCK ON DAKADAKADAKADAKADAKA!!!"
An unappreciated entry in the Sega CD canon. Thanks for the memories Mark.
I own this game, but here in Europe is called "Thunderhawk". Awesome game, i love the Mega CD / Sega CD :)
Is that Skeletor giving the mission brief?
Haha I was just going to ask the same thing!
Mark please show off your whole map with all the pins in it so we can get a good look at it. That's always a cool part of these videos
This game looks pretty good on a console that came out in 22 years ago in 1992!
I forgot this game, but now I REMEMBER! rented it a lot back then
Cool game! It almost looks like an early Saturn game.
First Sega CD game I ever saw live on the spot. Was on display in some game store.Gotta say I was pretty impressed with it at the time.
I hope Mark reviews the 4th of July. Oh, and fireworks too. That would be sweet.
I remember having a two-level demo disc of this on my European Megadrive (the game was called "Thunderhawk" in Europe). I swear I played that demo more than any of the full games I owned on Mega-CD.
Reminds me of Blue Lightening on the Atari Jaguar CD
probably the best game on the sega cd
You have a lot of viewers from (cue reverb) NEW JERSEY, including myself, looking forward to getting Lord Karnage vol.1, great video, keep up the good work.
PS, the world needs more Hayzoos.
I grew up with TS2 on the PS1. I finally picked up a CD and got this game with it!
This game was called Thunderhawk in other regions, there's a sequel on Saturn and PS1 too.
The guy who did the music, Martin Iveson, has composed for LOADS of other games and currently makes house music under the name AtJazz. I asked him a few questions about his influences on this soundtrack a few years ago for an article I was writing and he was listening to a lot of the stoner/spacerock band Ozric Tentacles at the time. It's really noticeable if you give their stuff a listen!
My favourite soundtrack of his is Bubba and Stix on Megadrive/Genesis, would love to see you review that, Mark!
Hehe cool to meet another Iveson fan :) I wrote a pretty lengthy piece on the Bubba and Stix soundtrack for Sega Addicts if you ever fancy a read! sega-addicts.com/2010/07/13/the-sonic-head-jog-bubba-n-stix/
Great review. I totally agree! It is also one of my favorites. If this was an Airwolf game it would have been EPIC!
I remember these graphics looking amazing.
pretty sure I have this game when I was a kid I remember loving flying games and also racing when I was young
I want Sega back in the console race, dam they had some solid games :)
I would say this game is the reason why I was in love with my Sega CD (JVC X' Eye clone really). Thanks for talking up the music I actually wondered if it you
could buy it as a soundtrack alone! I spent many months rocking out to this game and got fully immersed in it and not many video games did that to me in my 30's.Great game for 1993 or for Retro fans. It's available as an emulation also for those looking to skip investing in a Sega CD. Next phase from Desert Strike series to Thunderstrike for me was on the PS1 Black Dawn, then adulthood and porn on the new "internet" thing, lol. Peace.
Somehow I feel Mark knew this show would be the Pyramid Tomb we would all remember him by.
Instant like for the SEGA CD! Any game that plays like a first-person version of the excellent Strike series is worth playing in my book.
Mi favorito es el Thunderstrike 2 de la PSX.
Saludos desde México.
Can anyone tell me what the opening speech says? I can't quite tell.
Looks like the kind of game you could chant, "I am the greatest!" while you play.
If I remember correctly the soundtrack was from a fellow named Anthony Wheeldon... I have track 6 and 11 and maybe 10 on my playlists to this very day....🤘
Loved the soundtrack
The name fooled me to believe it was part of the junglestrike, urbanstrike etc. . . franchise but the real game name is actually Thunderhawk and was renamed for NA release . . . it did spawn 2 sequel according to wikipedia as well :P
best mega cd game
and very impressive graphics for its time :-)
i still have it and play it from time to time
Awesome! Love this game.
This music ROCKS!!
The new Manic Street Preachers album is great. I highly recommend it.
Looks pretty goddamn fun.
What about the original Operation Flashpoint? That had helicopter combat.
style of the cutscenes kooks really cool. I'd like to play a whole game in that style/
Hey I was just playing some Sega CD. Shining Force CD is still a lot of fun and does benefit sound wise without a doubt from the CD medium.
example of a game that all sega cd games. Scaling and rotation was amazing. Mode 7 almost.
Dee Dee yeah - this blew my 9 year old mind the first time I sat in front of this one. Graphics - smooth frame rate - and kicking soundtrack
Maybe it was because the game I tried right before was Sherlock Holmes but.... this was one of the few gems for the Sega CD
I remember liking this game a lot, but I think my disc had a scratch that prevented me from playing it all the way through.
Huh; just found this at a used game store earlier today (disc only) for one dollar. I'll have to give this a run tomorrow!
And don't forget "Snatcher"!
Is there any modern game like this?
So blow stuff up with an attack helicopter while headbanging to early 90s hard rock. Hard to go wrong with that formula.
I don't think the second e is silent in Robo Aleste.
'Thunderhawk' here in the UK.
Looks like fun!
This bad boy was probably the closest the Sega CD came to realizing my own personal, selfish expectations of what a CD based game should be back in the day.
You must do the echo for "Awesomestrike" :D
How much would a Sega CD, a model 1 Genesis and some games run me, I'm looking to join the Sega master race
more than you got. A Soul.
Genesis is about 30 bucks on estarland, Sega CDs last I checked were about 50+ depending on which one you get, games vary wildly. It's a lot cheaper than collecting for the SNES however. Great games on the Gen can run a whole 2 bucks ranging to 100.
Snotnarok
Thanks bro, it's rare youtube comments are actually helpful
finding a sega cd unit that works and stays working is what is going to be the biggest problem. I'd suggest a JVC X'eye. The Model 2 Sega CD units are also OK and cheaper but the lasers tend to fail or get out of alignment.
TheDevilBurning
How often would you say Sega CDs break? Like, in terms of time how long would say one lasts?
Oh, yeah!
it was just hard as balls to leave the battlefield after the mission, because enemy jet would just appear behind you out of thin air.
So will it be a never ending reviews, you'll eventually get to reviewing you reviewing classic game room and so fourth
The voice saying 'Incoming Missile' sounds like Edit Station 3
This is so Lando
0:17 Mark loading a Sega CD disc into a Sega CD system...0.o
Damn, this looks like an early Saturn game
Bah, I always thought Lord Karnage was the Pacman-esque mascot's name. Nothing will ever be the same :(
That's the happy beer bubble man
I still have this CD in a whole bunch of other Sega CD
Ohh, yeah, the Strike series. EA registered something Strike not long ago, they might bring back the series.
DO A CLASSIC GAME ROOM TOUR THUMBS UP SO HE SEES!!!!!
Interesting, the mission debriefer sounds an awful lot like Phil Hartman. Hmm...
I loved this game when it came out. The sequel for Saturn was HORRIBLE though.
beaut sprite scaling.. if only the mega cd was a bit cheaper at the time.this slapped the snes mode 7 all over it's face!
This game is the reason I'm sad my Sega CD succumbed to capacitor rot.
Is this game on rails?
Nope. It's free-flight all the way through. Cool huh?
Yeah, because the Sega CD doesn't really give the Genesis any more power except for storage, right? Genesis doesn't have something similar to a mode 7 like the SNES built in, so programmers had to make this from scratch.
Actually I just read about Sega CD and apparently it did give the Genesis more power but I don't think anything having to do with "built in" game display modes.
exactspace Actually the Sega CD is more powerful if we're talking about sheer capability. "Mode 7" could only be used with the background layer on the SNES (no sprites) while the Sega CD allowed individual sprite scaling along with it.
Sadly all I could do so far is emulating this game.
It was cool though.
Gotta check eBay for a copy, I guess.
More SEGA CD!!!
muito bom!
Wow! The music is fucking awesome! While the Sega CD has interactive movie/games that suck ass, this game makes up for it. A soundtrack would be good.
Oh, a good Sega-CD game.Someone pinch me :)
Core Design
Dat lisp doe.
darth revan is the best
Hell yes! Lord Malak was most displeased when he learned you had escaped Taris alive. He promised a great reward for whoever kills you.
but really.. i kill me!.. so i want my reward now :p
Darth bane would be second best sith id say
Darude - Sandstorm
Laser Invasion done better
Awesome game actually. Love the music and light gun sections
me too. The flying looks better here though
Where is the thunder? Misleading title 0/10
looks nice
