Yeah its sad that rappers shifted from massive 24k gold chains to the iced out shit. At least the massive gold chains were actuslly rare and they had a lot of it, like kgs of pure gold. Now the chains have as little gold as possible at a low karat to leave more room for diamonds.
As a financial advisor, this video makes me so happy. Financial literacy is something that is absolutely vital to living in today's world, and far too many people don't recognize it. Thank you for educating the masses, you may have saved a few people from financial ruin.
It's not something people can recognize without first being educated about it. But for some reason we don't teach financial literacy in schools, although we likely should. That's not a mistake, most people are kept ignorant to many aspects of finance and economics because the system was not designed for their benefit. It was designed for regular people to be at the bottom for a small amount of incredibly wealthy people to prosper.

When I was 19, I weaseled my way into an asst manager job at a Zale’s jewelry store. I know others have said it, but the mark up on jewelry is highway robbery. When a customer would come in, we would automatically take 30% off the price just as a starting point. Depending on how I felt and the customer’s vibe, I could take up to 70% off on most things. One time I had Jarvis Green come in. It was around Christmas. He made my whole month. He just went around, asking to see various items and added them to his tab. He was cool as fuck and thanked me for working around the holidays.
A huge problem with the Dimond covered watches, unless those diamonds are set by the manufacturer or the watch, you've actually made the watch worth less.
The inherent value has gone down, yes, but as long as the insides and diamonds are genuine, it’s still worth a pretty penny. Most collectors would never even attempt to look at one of those Bustdowns, even for a split second. But there is this big stigma that aftermarket watches like that are worthless, but really they’re still worth a fuck load. Especially to the right person. Some people just want to be flashy, while others just want to collect and have a quality collection. Manufacturer set diamonds will always be King👑, but people are always going to want Diamonds on their jewelry. One way or another it happens, which is how we got to where we are now. Rappers just wanted to show off, and these jewelers wanted to make a quick buck.

Jewelry in general is a massive scam. A friend purchased a ring for $1500 and then gave it to me for helping him move. When I went to go sell it the best I could get for it was $180... it's all a giant predatory scam.
nature of business in general. everything you buy is a mark up. jewelry isn’t rly any more of a scam. the material of the jewelry at least has some real value. $45 t shirts are technically worth pennies, same with any consumer product. most jewelers are just middle men and middle men have to turn a profit. if someone offered you that low for a ring it’s because that’s the scrap value, not including the labor of making the ring and whoever sold it to the jeweler that sold it to your friend. you’d have better luck selling it to another consumer like yourself than a business that wants to profit off of your transaction.

The diamond is now worth way more than the water. Even if he had to pay a little for the diamond, it’s definitely something he would need more in this scenario. Going by your logic, anything that’s not a strict necessity to live, is a “scam”. “You don’t need that skateboard, buying skateboards are scams” Or “Why would you ever need to buy an overpriced car, just get a bike and ride the bus, cars are scams” Would be another. A “scam” is a dishonest scheme where another is tricked by deception to partake in. Just because you don’t agree with diamonds and their prices doesn’t mean it’s a “scam”. If everyone decided to stop buying diamonds for exorbitant prices they’d be forced to lower them.
I'm a jeweler, and I pride myself with education and transparency. I want jewelry to be an investment, it should be. Most retail jeweler is marked up 200-400%. You can check the spot price for all precious metals easily. You shouldn't pay $2000 for a ring that has $400 worth of gold in it.
if you was a jeweler then you'd know that a lot of the price depends on the work put into crafting the piece. A lot of the rappers bling is fucking worthless trash outside of the precious metals because the design itself is trash. And fuck yeah that shit has a 3-5x markup or however much it is. Yes black people spend money and waste money on dumb stuff. They need too invest they money on things that will make them money. Some people are just dumb when it comes too finace and that's how they end up broke a bankrupt. My mom use too say if you spend a dollar safe a dollar.
The entirety of "hip hop" is a scam: the "music", the image and lifestyle that is put out there for young black men (and women) to emulate, etc. The two most concerning things about hip hop are the misogyny and the (misdirected) violence/animosity/hostility with the two things being very much related (i.e. the violence is directed at women, at other black men, basically inwards towards the black community). Women are also very much sexually objectified and demeaned.
I agree that rap has awful elements like misogyny. That isn’t something you have to believe to enjoy rap. It’s important to ask yourself why hip hop or rap is how it is. A violent environment comes from systemic poverty not race. rap and hip hop are calls for social justice and bringing attention to some real and horrible racial inequalities like the 100 times less amount of intergenerational wealth in this country for African Americans. So rap and hip hop is empowering for people who have to go through struggles that you and I don’t have to think about. So rap deserves to be critiqued for its bad features but it should contextualized as it is a form of expression as well.
I own a pawn shop & it blows my mind how rappers didn’t know nothing about diamonds. One guy came in with diamonds so bad they looked grey. All he heard was VVS. Or they come in with a bust down watch just to find out the watch was more valuable before they put diamonds in it. I get into the biggest arguments when it comes to anything bust down.

There are only a few names in jewelry where you’re able to recoup a good chunk of what you spent on a piece, and that’s never going to happen on a custom piece iced with melee diamonds. They’re pretty much the scraps from diamond mines
@@Jaysqeek it means that just because 1 kilo of gold is made into a chain, doesn’t make it worth any more. A 1 kilo gold bar and a 1 kilo chain have the same value. Even VVS or Flawless stones of that size don’t go for more than a few dollars each on the open markets. I always heard the reason rappers bought jewelry was because if they were arrested, they would have some property to give to their homies so they can sell it and bail them out. If you have cash, cops can steal that. Jewelry is property though, so it has to be declared and tracked when you do intake.

Great video, I remember a man on IG told me I must buy fake jewelry when I said diamonds don’t hold value. Telling me his jeweler said his chain is worth 2x the amount now I laughed 😂😂😂
As of right now, and during various intervals in the past decade, yes. But in the late 90's, platinum was considerably more expensive than gold. Not only that, but it was rarely used for jewelry because most jewellers weren't as experienced in working with it at the time. Platinum is a much denser metal compared to gold or silver, and incredibly hard as well. It's melting point is also much higher than that of gold, so there was definitely a learning curve when it came to working with it for all those custom pieces, which I'm sure was reflected in the making charges. The price of gold didn't begin to skyrocket to the heights we're seeing today until the mid-late 00's.
It's sad that some of these young men feel their only worth is in fronting instead of saving There are a long line of rappers who have nothing but memories please wise up
You can do both buddy, lil baby got millions in jewlery with millions in saving, I spent $35k on diamond teeth but still got money saved lmao, there is no point in having money if you not gonna spend it
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I work as an investment advisor and appreciated Cordae’s take on expensive jewelry. Because the rap game doesn’t come with retirement plans, it’s important to pay yourself now vs later. For the average rappers, most of their earning potential is realized before they are 30. What I’d love for them to realize is that $1 while they’re 20 years old can turn into $80+ when they’re in their 60’s through the power of compounding. While its nice to make a profit from flipping a nice watch, over time it doesn’t compare to what the time value of money can do to a portfolio. If you enjoy flipping watches, its a great thing to do. However if you’ve got 6 or 7 figures in cash that’s set aside for jewelry, consider the fact that just $100k can turn into $8M over time in an investment account . Yes it’s slow and boring, but it also takes no effort and provides returns that jewelry can’t!
Hey jeweler is like a tattoo artist, you have to do your research when picking one. When you're going to spend a few grand with someone you have to know their reputation and you have to see other people's pieces that they've had for like five plus years, you know. Do your research and don't rush into anything.
To be clear Slick Rick shouldn’t be included in this! He got most of his jewelry at a time when it was extremely cheap. He upgraded pieces to platinum in the 2000s. Many (I do mean many) rappers rent jewelry from Slick Rick for shows, events, & videos to this day! Slick Rick is basically the industry jewelry rental person. Now speaking on Eric B & Rakim, their chains were not theirs! Those were chains owned by Rapp & the original 50 cent. Those gentlemen were known as notorious stick up kids in Brooklyn during that time. It is rumored that one or two of those rope chains were taken from LL Cool J in a McDonald’s drive thru robbery done by the original 50 cent.
only problem is almighty jay was a prank video but he got contexted like they are fake. which in the rap game could affect him negatively. other than that love the channel.
Until like 02-03 the jewelry was mostly understated and barely ever custom. I’m from Atlanta but i gotta blame the south. Southern rappers started going big and custom, and rap never looked back.
Another good piece of advice bro would be to advise anyone purchasing jewelry to invest in the testing equipment, and take it to your purchase not being afraid to use it right there in front of the person selling it to you.
@@dimedavispresentstalkyospitThe difference between fake and low quality is subjective. But to answer your question the appraiser is paid to certify the authenticity of the jewelry. As long as the insurance company doesn't require their own appraiser your good. Then you wait for the right time to report it stolen. Same with art. There is no true value in any of these things.

Rappers just wanted to show off, and these jewelers wanted to make a quick buck.

nature of business in general. everything you buy is a mark up. jewelry isn’t rly any more of a scam.
the material of the jewelry at least has some real value.

But let’s say you are a banker and you are looking for a great deal for a diamond to create a piece for your wife. If one person offers him a cup of water and the other a diamond. The diamond is now worth way more than the water. Even if he had to pay a little for the diamond, it’s definitely something he would need more in this scenario.

True!true!true!
Yea ok listen to W.A.P. by a woman. They do this to their ratchet selves..
$400 off one sale?? I’m in the wrong business!
I own a pawn shop & it blows my mind how rappers didn’t know nothing about diamonds. One guy came in with diamonds so bad they looked grey. All he heard was VVS. There’s a reason iced Rolexes cost less used than regular ones. The culture ruined everything, cars, clothes, jewelry, sex….disgusting
Every hip hop musician needs to watch this video. If they have any sense, they’ll appreciate it and reprioritze QUICKLY. ❤
That face gillie made when ol boy said Soulja was his biggest client was priceless
Great video man. Coming from a guy who spent over 250k on jewelry in the last 2 years, I wish I watched this video before. Much respect. To all the young guys leave that shit alone. Focus on you and your family’s future.
250k? Damn
You’re an idiot
Damn ice king

Sauce walka said it , must be true . Bro making these vids is a clown as well
Bro this video is golden. Pun intended. Seriously this shows how rappers throughout the industry are being super scammed for years. I hope this video reaches and positively affects a lot of people.
I just got ripped off I'm also rapper n spent 200,000 on 14 k gold plated necklace
One thing this video doesn’t mention is that many of these rappers use jewelry to launder money for them…. It’s not just jewelers scamming people
Poor guys... Let's start a crowdfunding to help scammed rappers to get back on their feet.
@@ace9xx hahahaha! Anyone who wants to ruin a rare watch and stupid enough to pay to have it ruined is… just that! Stupid!
@@chad1550 even if that were true, you deserved that. no way a necklace would ever cost 200,000, even with diamonds. you getting scammed like these rappers
The face Gillie makes when the fake jewelry seller says Soulja Boy’s name gets me every time lmaoo 😂😂😂
I always heard the reason rappers bought jewelry was because if they were arrested, they would have some property to give to their homies so they can sell it and bail them out. If you have cash, cops can steal that. Jewelry is property though, so it has to be declared and tracked when you do intake.
If the internet didn't tell lil baby he may have never knew, no telling how many people have been f'd over with non-authentic jewelry really makes you wonder 🤔
Great video, I remember a man on IG told me I must buy fake jewelry when I said diamonds don’t hold value. Telling me his jeweler said his chain is worth 2x the amount now I laughed 😂😂😂
Diamonds don't hold value because diamonds have no value to start with.
loose diamonds do have value.its based on artificial supply but the value is there. the value is lost when they are cut@@Thor-Orion
This was truly one of the greatest informative while entertaining videos I’ve ever watched! Definitely make more!!
Platinum is not more expensive than gold at all, gold is almost twice as expensive as platinum.
It's sad that some of these young men feel their only worth is in fronting instead of saving
There are a long line of rappers who have nothing but memories please wise up
You can do both buddy, lil baby got millions in jewlery with millions in saving, I spent $35k on diamond teeth but still got money saved lmao, there is no point in having money if you not gonna spend it
Thoroughly enjoyed this video.
We need more of this type content fam!!! This how artist DONT get scammed with accurate and truthful info. 💯 🔥 🔥 🔥
They dumb fs for not doin the research they deserve to get scammed
Hey jeweler is like a tattoo artist, you have to do your research when picking one. When you're going to spend a few grand with someone you have to know their reputation and you have to see other people's pieces that they've had for like five plus years, you know. Do your research and don't rush into anything.
Do you heard about *Iceblingers* I think some rappers buy from them ?
I think rapper shop there at iceblingers because Im looking at some of their photos on Google in man this shit is funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣
fake
1800’s you had chains
2020’s you get chains but with diamonds.
Black people want to get back in them
@Black Jesus making false equivalencies
True, true
Now thay pay money to have a chain wrapped around them :/
@Black Jesus which don’t make it slavery cuz slaves never had the luxury.
FYI inside the buissnes, iced out rolexes are known as NTRolex, you can guess why. So don't forget, your scammer JEWeler is NOT your friend
I'm actually shocked that you never mentioned T-Pain. He exposed so much in the industry talking about fake jewelry
This is a great video showing how ignorance, ego, and money come together to create a perfect Storm of stupidity.
It is rumored that one or two of those rope chains were taken from LL Cool J in a McDonald’s drive thru robbery done by the original 50 cent.
yo who is the original 50 cent tho?
@@eatassonthefirstdate you have youtube and google! Go look it up!
Moral of the story: Take a reputable expert when purchasing jewellery to confirm or verify so as not to get conned
I like this dude, i like listening to him, keep it up dude, when you get big please dont change and let all the flash and fame change your videos ❤️
Me too! His tone, research and delivery 👌🏾
only problem is almighty jay was a prank video but he got contexted like they are fake. which in the rap game could affect him negatively. other than that love the channel.
its NOT ONLY JEWELRY - their life stories - their money - their connections - THEIR PERSONALITIES
BRO I NEED MORE CONTENT LIKE THIS ITS NICE TO LEARN SOMETHING AND U ENTERTAINING ASH 🔥🔥
the word cordae was seeking for nba players is called a PENSION lol
Until like 02-03 the jewelry was mostly understated and barely ever custom. I’m from Atlanta but i gotta blame the south. Southern rappers started going big and custom, and rap never looked back.
Mr. T originally wore Gold chains around his neck.
@@ChosenOne6666 yes. But i was referring to hip hop.
@@Trash2000s You must not know Mr. T BRUH
@@ChosenOne6666 yea huh, from the A team
Slick rick?
Another good piece of advice bro would be to advise anyone purchasing jewelry to invest in the testing equipment, and take it to your purchase not being afraid to use it right there in front of the person selling it to you.
The only way to recoup your money in jewelry is thru insurance and appraisal fraud. If you know the game it's actually a good investment
How if it's FAKE 🤔
@@dimedavispresentstalkyospitThe difference between fake and low quality is subjective. But to answer your question the appraiser is paid to certify the authenticity of the jewelry. As long as the insurance company doesn't require their own appraiser your good. Then you wait for the right time to report it stolen. Same with art. There is no true value in any of these things. It's all a Ponzi scheme to keep money flowing thru the system.
