Yup, his kind of skates have the exact same binding as cross country skis. You can even use the same shoes but you generally want more support around the ankle than what regular xc shoes provide. I don't know exactly which ones he has but they look very similar to my Zandstra Blade. There are other nordic skates available with attached heel, but they're not nearly as convenient to put on and remove.
Ohh I am sorry !! I know about this, my father taught us to "travel skate" decades ago on the lake where I live,he would skate ahead tapping the ice with a sturdy pole to avoid thin ice. The skates are better now and it is still an adventure! It is a lot like cross country skiing. I live over two thousand meters in altitude!

They're called NNN BC bindings and are the same as tourskis
