Not a contractor or anything like that. But I’m 30 years old and I just bought my first house and I like to watch ur videos on things I’m trying to do and it really helps! Thanks so much for uploading!
I’ve been in construction since 1989. Thanks for putting on a very explanatory video to remove a section of drywall from the ceiling. My young daughter will do this repair tonight and I will show her this video. 👍
Hey, Paul! Good timing. I am doing a neighbor's utility room that had a roof leak. 5/8 inch. Used an oscillating tool to cut thru. I did the small piece to check for wires and not only a 12 gauge wire but a propane gas pipe for a fireplace was above that section. Wise to shallow cut and make inspection hole as you did.
Awesome video Paul! This is such a common occurrence. My husband is a Property Manager and every year 1 or 2 will have a ceiling leak. This is a very useful video for many.
Thank you for this informative video! I am a DIYer. I have a ceiling patch repair I need to do but I've not done ceilings before so wasn't sure I would attempt to do it myself. I think I will now! I'm a middle aged female and don't think I'd have the strength to cut the drywall over my head with a blade like you did but one of the comments below suggested using an oscillating tool so I'm going to try that instead. I appreciated all of the details about how you determined where to cut.
You can get a small saw as well if you have issues with the razor blade. I am gonna pick up a oscillating tool. That seems the easiest for me and its is as low as $69.99 for a good enough one for this. GOOD LUCK 😁
Thank you, this helped me a lot. I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video. Not a pro, just an old woman trying to diy her bathroom ceiling.
Hey Paul. As I told you in the Nimmin Live chat, I've been doing some updating of our home. I've been removing popcorn texture from ceilings, repairing a few old wet spots in the ceiling, and now I am drywalling a partition wall in our basement. I have old drywall experience, but I am about 25 years rusty, so I appreciate the refresher and tips you share. 👍👍
I planning to fix the ceiling in my bathroom ,it's was water damage just above my shower head. I will follow the way you did it and hope this project won't be going for to long.
Hi thanks so much for the video. I'm attempting to replace my AC duct work and some of the vents are installed in a way that i must take out pieces of drywall in the ceiling. Thanks so much for these videos!!!!

Hi Paul. Awesome video. How do you address replacing blown in insulation when doing small to moderate dry wall repair? Our ceiling and blown in insulation got water damage from a roof leak. Thanks
I got a question. I am being a maintenance person for my mom’s hotel. I’ve done construction when I was 18. But I’ve done more concrete than anything. But with if a water leak coming from the roof. What do I use to seal the leak. And another thing. What if it’s cracking down the seam of the drywall is it best to just cut the leak or take out the whole drywall on the ceiling
We just had to fix our house after hurricane laura. A tree fell on our roof and damaged the ceiling in 3 rooms. Im on the last room and need to know how to float the ceiling corners because my buddy flaked out on me. I learned by watching videos on RUclips and starting in the closet. I've been able to do a pretty decent job and we have orange peel texture so most mistakes will cover easy.
I loved this video and your others made me so much more confident about repair -- but I notice that you don't address the insulation issue. I had a leak on my roof (TPO leak, patched it, it's fine now) that led to leaking through into the insulation and then the drywall of the ceiling just below the roof (there's no attic). I removed the drywall, then the wet insulation. But now I'm trying to figure out whether to just put the same insulation in that had been there previously, or to replace it with something better (that would fit). Any thoughts on how to approach the process?
How would you do this if the insulation is 30 inches of snow fluff above the damage from the leaky roof?? my shingles and roofing plywood are replaced, now for the drywall ceilling damage.......
hi there...my tub from upstairs leaked one day about 5 years ago to the downstairs ceiling. I was filling up the bathtub and when I went downstairs to grab a glass a wine I heard what sounded like a waterfall. then I realized my ceiling was wet in some areas. So I rush upstairs, the tub wasnt overflowing it was 3/4 full but I emptied it anyway and called a plumber next morning. he fixed it said it was a loose drain. I never filled the tub again after that day. I also didnt replace the drywall, it dried without damage or discoloration. do you think I should replace it? still no discoloration or bubbling. ceiling still looks like new. wat do u think?
Hi, I have mold on my ceiling drywall in my garage. Trying to decide if I cut it out or treat it with mold spray and primer. Do you any thoughts on treating mold vs cutting it out?
Are dehumifers worth using and do they kill mold already in a room or do they just stop new mold appearing also is salt effective and ok to use in dehumifers that have crystals in the top of dehumifer when Crystal's have run out I have mold in my bedroom and I use dehumifers and I dont wanna have to keep buying more dehumifers
Thank you for making your videos. What is the best way, after it stops raining, and after the roof leaking gets patched up, to dry out the wet mess in the ceiling?
I have 3 spots like that in my family room, but much worse. 2 of them are against an inside wall, and one straddles a joist in the middle of the room. Hurricane damage. I poked holes in them during the storm to let the water out and prevent spread. They have had about a year to dry out, so now I will cut them out and fix them this fall. New roof works great! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I did this years ago for a friend, so it was a nice refresher. After the ceiling repair, I have to reapply the popcorn ceiling finish and paint to match. The popcorn in a spray can with multiple tips works really good. Thanks again. I'm a DIYer, do just about everything myself, plumbing, electrical, AC, Wells, Brick work and cement, etc... Dad taught me well and has saved me a ton of money over the years.
After it’s fixed prime the area of the repair on ceiling let dry then paint the entire ceiling to desired color before u shoot the popcorn up. Once that’s dry mix ur texture up and add the paint u used to paint ceiling directly to the mix. Shoot it up and now it will dry and blend so u don’t have to paint over the nex texture. 👍
Just recently notified water dripping from the ceiling in the shower while the shower was running!😮 turned water off and the dripping stopped. I run the water in the tub which is separate from the shower. No water leak. I do have an upstairs room above my shower. No other shower or tub above just a room. What you think?

I’m a Diyer. I had a short in the ac line running a-crossed the ceiling and had to cut holes to trace the path of the line to find the short. Short was caused by a mouse chewing the line. No I need to patch these holes. The problem is that the ceiling is knockdown textured. Needing to know how to match the new Sheetrock with existing ceiling.
Thank you for educating the public! I just attached a 14x16 inch patch to the frame of a tray ceiling. Half the patch is level to the existing ceiling but the other half is about 1/6 inch recessed. Should I “pre-fill” recessed area to make level with the other half before taping? Or tape first before several more coats of mud and skim coat? Does it matter what I do first? Thank you!
It wouldn’t hurt to prefill the joints anyways. So yes, prefill then apply the coats accordingly to make the patch nice and flat.👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend!😎 -Paul

So ours is pretty bad and it spread to the surroundings so the ceiling kinda sags (due to the water) and the drywall installed is higher than the surrounding ceiling in some places. I was wondering what do you suggest if the ceiling walls are uneven
The drywall looked solid. What would be a disadvantage to simply using an extreme blocking primer on the stained area and then painting the entire ceiling with a color matched paint instead of replacing the drywall?
If there is only water spots as in his video, he basically just over charging. No reason to rip that out considering it’s dry and solid. I would have put a moisture meter on it and just slapped an oil based primer on it and painted the entire ceiling. Would have costed 150 to 200 instead of 500-600.
I’m a homeowner (not very handy) trying to figure out what to do about a ceiling leak. It’s around a bay window area, and I just had the window replaced in the spot in the floor above, thinking that would fix it. It did not. Now it smells like mold in the room (floor above) and the leak is still happening in the floor below. I have a guy coming Monday to take a look, same people who replaced the windows. Hopefully they will figure out the leak. I’m just trying to figure out what to do about the mold and the ceiling.

My question as well
the disadvantage would be that you couldn't charge the customer for a drywall repair
bleach it, let it dry, then seal it with Bin Shellac.
I was thinking that a blocking primer and paint would have been an appropriate repair too.
