When you become so good at your instrument that what you play doesn’t even make sense to your average player anymore. Like where do you start from? You just pull randomly the notes you want from the fretboard?

You compose it. The bottom three strings comprise the bass, the top three strings are the melody. Compose the melody, add a simple bass line, and add some accompanying notes along the way. Then practice, and bam, you have a fingerstyle cover.
Do that 100 times or so and understand the theory behind it, and now you can improvise, too.

First figure out the chords and rhythm . Then create the bassline from there. Then piece out the melody notes from the chords (on highest three strings) . Add altogether and you got a song composition. And last step is to add decorations like some pull offs, hammer ons, slides, bends up or down to the target note of the melody🙂
