  • This video takes a look at the life and career of Jules Chéret, who was arguably the progenitor of the modern illustrated poster. Despite his importance in the history of illustration he doesn't get as much attention as many who later followed in his footsteps. I hope this brings his pioneering work to wider attention.

@@cynthialeeser7952 Thank you Ms. Leeser, I think that the skill, knowledge and dedication of Pete Beard in championing illustrators is something to recognise and to celebrate. He has slowly built a loyal following and the more that his work is viewed the better. Your comment that it is an 'important body of work' is right on target, although he is modest about his achievement.

Back in the 80's I worked next to a poster shop in SF where they sold the originals of many of the French poster artists. They had a beautiful full size Vin Mariani by Cheret that I wanted badly, but it was $1200. My car at the time cost $600. Alas, what is it worth today? Thanks Pete for another beautiful video.

Hi there and thanks for the comment. I saw some original posters in the Nice art gallery and was amazed by the size of the things. They must have been printed in sections like a billboard? Hope all is well in Oviedo.

      Glancing over the internet
      A 11.7"×8.3" to 21.5"×15" original lithograph ranges from $330 to $2,400, while a 33"×47" auctioned off at $3,600 (from a range of $2,500 - $3,000).
Angelo Mariani's tonic of coca leaves and Bordeaux wine = coca + alcohol = cocaethylene*
      the precursor to Coca-Cola.
Jules Cheret is considered the father of the poster while Angelo Mariani, the father of advertising.
      * Vin Mariani is three drugs in one.
"Cocaine co-administered with alcohol ... yields a potent psychoactive metabolite, cocaethylene."

Jules Cheret took drawing lessons from the French artist *Horace Lecoq de Boisbaudran* who taught "memory drawing".
Memory drawing teaches to observe the subject matter in front of you without immediately drawing. Once you have memorized the image then you draw it onto paper or canvas in one sitting. The result is one fluid coherent image.
This would explain Cheret's flowing linework as it has already been processed in his head before putting it down on a surface.
Basically a good skill for drawing on lithographic stone without having any underdrawing beforehand.
J.M. Turner, the great English painter, similarly worked out the painting from memory before putting it down on canvas. He recorded the optical light on his retina even before the French Impressionists used the same technique.

      ah, boulderdash young man 😁
Your research is solid. I never thought I would be interested in Cheret* if not for your well made presentation.
The reason I knew Boisbaudran was from sitting next to a classically trained painter (Florence) during life drawing sessions. He would sit observing the model not drawing until the last minute and then put down some lines on a sketch about two by two inches. From that (and an excellent knowledge of anatomy) he could later make an oil painting three by five feet or so.
      * and others. Also, the illustration periodicals as hubs that ties them together.

It shows me the need for sages to guide laypeople on the journey to help us see what we might miss with an untrained eye. I strongly recommend it and would love to know what you think of it. It makes me lament that after finishing my schooling in the public school system in America that all I learned about Van Gogh was his ear and his breakdown.

You're *right* regarding lithographs being put together in panels like billboards.
The *Fourth Cone Restoration Blog* has some amazing photographs of a Leonetto Cappietto 'Maurin Quina Absinthe' poster ad being restored.
    See Part 1
At a size of 6.5 feet by 12 feet the photos show the poster comprised of three panels.
    A 6.5 ft. x 4.0 ft panel with a 4" flange could be printed on a 59 in. x 90 in. limestone lithograph stone.
There's also a restoration of a Jules Cheret poster on the blog. One archival photo shows various huge posters on the side of a building.

I'm "breakfasting" and enjoying with these authentic pieces of art...and thinking about the power of advertising, anytime we imagine Paris - I really want to say France - in our mind appears the Eiffel tower and one of these illustrations...I know, they aren't exposed at the Louvre, but they've got the real spirit of the mass media culture, the "smell" of the 'quartiers', the parisian neighboors.
Thanks again Pete! Our life is better with your work.

A mix of photography, videography, drawing, found images, collage, montage etc. Some scifi, some noir some fantastic varied styles a dark sense of humor and all short , a minute more or less. 4 years ago I woke up one morning and decided I'd make animations and what you see is the result. I downloaded at random to RUclips so earlier work and later work are jumbled together. The most recent is at bottom "Rain". if you re interested My pal Dave aka Porter Woodrow who does the music has a video of one of his songs "Always Someplace Else ". This first time I've published to the public previously shared with group of friends so I have a certain trepidation and your response has left me feeling very positive and it is more pleasing coming from someone who's work you admire. *Thanks* for a really well made presentation of Jules Cheret.
Never appreciated his work until your video.
4:55 5:00 bold use of transparent orange
6:12 nice visual explanation of lithography colours. Even nowdays difficult to correctly register outlines on lettering without a overlay misprint.
8:25 makes one wonder if Cheret later used metal plates in place of stones. If huge stones of that size were used what happened to them? Stored, resurfaced, reused on the reverse side, destroyed or used in someone's residual house (humorous to have a Cheret garden wall)?
    ... verbage overrun
Good to hear Cheret made it to ninety-six years after a lifetime of breathing in the printing fumes of inks, solvents ... it took years for the Puck magazine building to air out its residual turpentine odor.

Hello again, and I found myself wondering about the precise method but can find no illumination. I'm pretty certain it was on stone - certainly the earlier work. My own theory about the large format work is that they may have been created with smaller panels, similar to billboards. I'm certain that Mucha did this on some of his work. But whatever the specific method was you've got to hand it to the man. And I hope I make 96 with all my parts intact and maybe I'll retire to the Riviera too...

      Lithographic limestone - Wikipedia
      Web photos show large stones.
Also, litho stones can be re-grained for reuse. Offset lithograpy started in 1903.
So, compared to carrying a limestone litho stone on one's back computer-aided design is looking better.
      Hope you enjoy the Riveria.

      nah, u r' no stoopid ...
Actually, I just had a 'duh' moment realizing that for years the poster I was looking at on the popular American sit-com "Friends" (1994-2004) was Jules Cheret's "Aux Buttles Chamout Joulets". Granted, might not mean much to a Brit.
Just because a huge limestone stone was available at the time doesn't mean Cheret didn't tile his large posters. At Vintage posters "Salamandre Space Heater" 1886 weights in at 48.25"x69.25" inches. Add in registration marks and trim.
Cheret being a businessman probably considered the time and pain in the derrierre of matching registration marks vs. the cost of a large stone to batch press various sized prints in one run thinking "Would someone hurry up and invent the chromolithgraphy sheet fed offset drum roller."
Plus, horizontally tiling his posters would have allowed him 'mix & match'* his designs since as his compositions were becoming more standardized it would've sped up production. 😁
      * similiar to the tri-partitioned children's books.
      Ps, yet mo' digression
could be Cheret's use of warm/cool colors was influenced by Michel-Eugene Chevreul's color theory book "The Law of Simultaneous Color Contrast", red/green, blue/orange, based on his work with textile pigments.
Perhaps, briefly explain four color CMYK halftone printing as you did the overlaying use of stones as it added another dimension to your already very well made presentations. Or, any other aspects of making illustrations.
Some commenters seem to response to that.

As one who cut his share of Amberlith, and its digital equivalent in early Photoshop, I am more than happy to live in the age of digital paint apps and color laser PoDs. I actually tried my hand at cutting Zipatone separations for traditional Offset color on cartoons. As they say in the funnies: Argh. _lol_ How Chéret was able to produce his separations on such a huge scale is amazing.
