    PertSnergleman's Review:
    -------------------------------------------
It all started in 1982 in the first week of December and instead of playing at the Australian Open the best players of the world were in Belgium, including McEnroe, Borg, Lendl and Wilander who all reached the semi-final.
While an exhibition tournament, invitations were extended to players who won a tournament title in Europe during that year. The surface of the tournament was indoor carpet.
The inaugural event was held in December 1982, with a $700,000 purse on offer for 24 players. At that time, the high level (Super Series) European Grand Prix events like the Italian Open or indoor tournament in Wembley, London offered only $300,000 and $200,000 respectively.
This is a perfect example of the chaotic state of tennis before 1990 and creation of the ATP Tour since we had McEnroe, Borg, Lend and Wilander fighting for the unofficial title not recognised by the ATP while at the same time Johan Kriek, Paul McNamee, Hans Pfister and Steve Denton played in the semi-final of the Australian Open, battling for a Grand Slam title!
Ivan Lendl became the inaugural champion, beating John McEnroe in the final 3-6 7-6 6-3 6-3 to earn $200,000.
Despite this 1982 semi-final victory, McEnroe, who deprived Borg of his No.1 World ranking, was given the clearest hint yet that Borg will be making a fierce challenge to regain both his titles and status when he returns to the offical world circuit early next year.
'He beat the hell out of me in the first set and played very well. The problem is that he can't play like that for a whole match yet' said McEnroe.
It was the perfect summing up to a match which, for the most part, was packed with fine tennis.
It was Borg's most impressive display so far since he began the series of exhibitions and special events which he hopes will lead him back to peak form by the time his tournament campaign resumes in February.
Borg hit some splendid passing winners in the final set except for a disastrous fourth game when he lost his serve and underlined McEnroe's points about his inconsistency.
This allowed McEnroe, who hit four aces including three in a row in the seventh game, to gain control and the American went onto win the match with his 10th ace after saving a break point against him two games later.
    Relax and Enjoy!

This match shows clearly what was going wrong with Borg, by that time.
He was still a great player, but had troubles to keep his concentration at the highest level for a whole match. You can feel it by watching the Wimbledon and US Open finals, already in 1981.
It was a real pity, that Borg hadn't a comeback in the Pro Circuit in 1983. For sure he wasn't helped by any tennis authority and he finally gave up. A great loss for tennis.

Technically Borg was a limited player. He said once, and the interview was for some time in Yout..., unfortunaltely not any more, that " he didn't have the strokes of Nastase or Mc Enroe". Physically he was well ahead of the others

Whoever the Wimbledon officials were that denied Borg a Wildcard & told him he'd have to play Qualifying, are the most idiotic people the planet has ever known.

une Finale extraordinaire, surtout pour la France, et pas comme maintenant, où la Coupe Davis s'est pratiquement transformée en une compétition de seconde zone

Obviously this is an exhibition but nevertheless it demonstrates that even by the end of 82 borg was still playing top 5 tennis.
All this comment you hear about him walking away after the 81 open is rubbish , he planned to play the 82 season on the tour but not the required 10 Grand Prix events so the itf pushed him out of the game by saying he had to play the qualies. This would be unthinkable in this day and age .
By 83 he really had lost the habit of practice and didn’t want to return to the tour
    a great shame

There was not " a chaotic state of tennis ", It's just the opposite. And it is called FREEDOM, when players played where and when they wanted. It is good to have freedom to play where you want, and not to play where the Players Union tell you where you have to go to play.
