Great video. What is your recommendation on how advanced should someone be on trumpet before starting on piccolo trumpet. Is there a certain comfortable range someone should have or some other milestone you should hit before starting piccolo trumpet.
Thanks for your thoughtful comment, Roger! Great question! First of all, if you don't have a developed range on the big trumpet, you won't have one on the little trumpet. The piccolo trumpet makes high notes easier, but it doesn't make high notes in and of itself. You probably need to have a pretty good handle on the big horn before you dive in head first on the pic. I do think that the piccolo can help train you to not overexert on the bigger horn. I tend to think that if you are a pretty serious high school trumpet player, you can start experimenting with the pic. Definitely college. I hope this helps.
@@ChrisWilsonTrumpet thanks!! I had the same question. have a workable High D range. (c concert) and getting better. But my love, and the reason why I picked up the Bb was to play pic and Natural horn.
Thank you so much for this video! I love your piccolo sound. Listening and copying directly from professionals has helped me improve the quickest lately. Keep these piccolo videos coming please!!
Which f did you start on? First space? I noticed you never used the 4th valve, so was it the higher F? which leadpipe did you use? B flat of A? thanks.
Hi Christopher thanks for posting this. I’ve seeking a workable practice routine to incorporate practicing with Picc. I have a Benge Picc that is the old Selmer type shape. I noticed that you played your ‘A’s on 3 rather than 1&2. Is that an instrument thing?
I typically use third valve because it is better in tune in F major on the piccolo in my experience. Since most piccolo's don't have a first slide trigger because the slide is so small, that seems to work better for me. The 1-2 combination is just a little too high and the 3rd valve does the trick. Thanks so much for watching!!

I start with the F one octave higher than 1&4 F. I mostly play on the A side. Hope this helps!
This was very helpful.
Great to hear!
