Great advice about breathing playing at 2” !!! I’m not doing all that every time but it’s true. Especially in high register, too much air blow it’s worse and on Piccolo it’s really bad thing. Congrats 😊
Playing piccolo trumpet for Maslanka Symphony no. 7 this semester for Wind Symphony at Northern Arizona University. Any tips for cutting through a large ensemble without hurting myself?
That's a great piece! I love Maslanka's writing. Piccolo is all about being efficient. If you try to put too much air through the piccolo trumpet it will just back up on you. Use good articulation and efficiency will be your best friend here.
@@PhillONeillTrumpet thanks for the help! I'll be sure to work on fundamentals at Max 15 minutes a day. Trying to be as efficient as possible with the process. It's a LOT different than playing lead in a big band, so it'll take some getting used to. Your video is going to be a huge help for me, thank you so much!
@@chandlerzimmerman9857 Glad to hear it. Yes it is very different to lead playing. but by playing piccolo trumpet you will find your lead playing will become a lot easier. :)

Hi Phil, I'm a hobby trumpeter in my 60s and would love to have a go on the picc, but to my dismay I found out that although pitched an octave higher it doesn't actually play any higher unless you can (if you see what I mean). My range isn't brilliant but it's ok for the big Bb horn. My question is this: What sort of range do you need to be able to play the piccolo? Be grateful for any advice. All the best Mark.
Hi Mark, That’s a great analysis and follow up question. You are correct playing a piccolo trumpet does not increase a players range. In many cases I know players who can’t play as high on piccolo trumpet as they can on Bb trumpet. This is because the resistance is different and we need to learn how to play with. The different resistance. Range will depend on what you are repertoire you are trying to play. In most cases most of my piccolo playing is on the A piccolo and I find a range up to the written F on top of the stave is plenty of range to do most pieces. If you don’t yet have that, don’t stress. Spend a little time playing piccolo trumpet every day and you will find in time your range will expand. #HappyPractising
It is very true that playing the piccolo trumpet is way different. And you don’t need much air either. But making believe that once you follow this advice you are going to be able to play with ease like you is not very truthful.
Im not sure I understand what you mean. If someone follows the advice then theyre playing with just as much effort as im playing with. Mind you, it does take years of practice to acheive the advice given in this video
Yes I have played several schagerl rotary valve piccolo Trumpets. They are very different to piston valve trumpets. Different feel and sound. They're fun to play but I do a lot of commercial playing on piccolo and needed the brighter sound of the pistons
Hi lord Zedd,. Pretty much the same advice as any other trumpet. What feels good to play, makes it easier to make the sound you want and fits in your budget. What are you currently playing?
I am currently playing on a normal Bb Trumpet but I have been told by my orchestra director that I could play the piccolo trumpet. I am in Middle School so I don’t have a large budget but want a trumpet that sounds good. Thanks
@@user-xd7yz3xg8s Hi Lord, In this case I would recommend the Stomvi Elite. It's a fantastic horn that I have seen professional players using in Professional orchestras but a very affordable price. Still play it yourself to see if you like it though.

My piccolo trumpet sounds really low when I play it (I'm in percussion and wanted to learn a new instrument meaning I'm new to this)
Attempting piccolo trumpet as a beginner. That’s a brave choice. 🤣

Hi, I have a problem with range on piccolo.
What is the problem ?
Hi Bozco,
There can be a number of reasons. If you can record a video of your playing and send it to me I’d be happy to help you with more specific advice.
No problem I'll do that
May I ask.. how much is the cheapest trumpet..
I have no idea. I only play great horns.
Is that a Stomvi Elite?
I’m using a Yamaha custom 9830 in this video. In more recent videos I’m using the Stomvi Titan Piccolo
Most early attempts at playing the piccolo end up making the instrument sound like a kazoo until you learn to control the air pressure.
"Still makes a perfectly good sound..."
YMMV
Thats a bloody trumpet not a horn
