Tom, you built your house properly with the amenities you wanted to include. Does it include a battery/solar system? Airconditioning? 😊 why do I ask? Well... retirement is just a year and a half away. And you know what rain does when you have lots of time and rain...
How can something get better when you can have an opera playing in the street? It can't...

The house was built to include a heat pump that provides heating and cooling via the floor. And it works very well. We installed the solar panels a year after building the house. It does not include a battery component. The installer suggested that batteries (and their disposal) are not advanced enough yet. Unfortunately, the architect didn't include a channel for the wiring from the panels to the electrical box thing that is on the wall above our electric panel, so we ran the wires on the outside from the roof, down an outside wall, and into the house through a small opening they created. Since then, I've painted the wiring to blend in with the color of the house. Our contract for the electric allows us to decrease our rate during the night. During the day the rate is higher, but we pull much less (or none at all) from the grid, which allows us to dramatically lower our electric bill. Last month it was 21 euros. We also have ceiling fans in the bedrooms, the kitchen and the living room. The solar panels cost about 1/4 of what we were quoted in the U.S. By the way, it hasn't rained here in two months. I also installed a drip water system in the gardens to reduce water usage. And we've learned that it's important to open the windows at night to take advantage of the cool, dry air. We close them during the day. The opera on the plaza was quite extraordinary. Glad you enjoyed it and good luck with your retirement plans!
