I like that this dungeon actually takes place in a "real" place. It feels like half the dungeons take place in a dream-scape or surreal alt dimension. It's very satisfying to look at the spire on the horizon, enter through the big underground cavern, climb to the top, then plunge back down into the depths of the facility. That progression felt a lot more narratively satisfying than the sort of unstructured journey through the Prophecy dungeon for example.

So this is hands down my favorite dungeons they’ve released and I couldn’t figure out why until I watched this video. It’s the short mechanics required to hit a dmg phase. If I’m going to have a short dmg phase with little to no-room for error during the phase, I don’t want to spend 5-6 minutes getting there. This dungeon is short, quick, to the point. I absolutely love that.

    • @jerryballstein
      @jerryballstein Год назад +19

That and I like how hitting the nodes feels like running the gauntlet in a way, and it really rewards you getting more and more efficient - as in there's no RNG to the mechanic and its purely map traversal and knowledge. I enjoyed figuring out Duality and beating it the first 4 or 5 times but after that its become a real slog. Definitely felt more of an accomplishment beating Duality day 1 vs Spire, but I think Spire is going to be fun for longer.

it also does an awesome job of letting you feel like you progress, from a narrative and setting perspective. You start running (probably more like eager edging) through the dunes, then you come across this abandoned western town with the bushweed (nice touch there) and see the spire in the distance. After the door in the ground opens up you travel through some incredibly large basement that just screams big vex plans and mystery. You get to ascend the tower from the outside while platforming with dizzying heights below you, have an epic bossfight on the top of it while constantly risking being pushed down (especially at the end of a damage phase), drop down through some vents, rotorblades and techy rooms, to face a really good boss in the basement, which you actually saw earlier in the dungeon traversing some hallway, and all of that is presented in a very thematic, clear way. Definitely a cool first experience.

I’d say I like this the most for similar if opposed reasons: I like that it feels like a more intensive yet similarly rewarding Strike more than the past dungeons. It probably doesn’t have the same atmospheric impact that basically all the past dungeons had, for sure, but of all the dungeons I could be invited to run back for loot with my friends, this is the first that I think I’d happily do a quick run or even more (circumstances willing), and not having craftable weapons in the pool just adds to that incentive.

I don't want to say I hate Duality, but there's just so much random BS that can kill you in Duality that the change of pace is welcome for the time being, at least for me. Being able to speed up the mechanical side of things is certainly appreciated as well, having to wipe in Duality is such a pain because it takes so long to set yourself up for a damage phase. I just wish heavy spawned more frequently in the final boss room because holy hell my brother and I ran around for 10 minutes at one point killing ads for heavy and we got nothing and just ended up using specials for damage.

I was using a god rolled linear with font of might and debuffs and such plus witherhoard, and it only put a little dent in the consecrated mind boss.

You then find out the true objective of the vex's siege, and rush to the main reactor where you face the wyvern, who appears thematically and gameplay-wise to be pretty pissed at your arrival. Also, cowboy hat.

    • @Boulder7685
      @Boulder7685 Год назад +8

Just to nitpick, because I think it’s better than how you described it; if I remember Byf’s explanation correctly then it’s more that we discover after thwarting the Vex’s primary plan of luring and trapping the subminds in the tower by killing the Siren, we discover that they had a secondary plan in place to blow the thing up after ensuring they’d gotten whatever data the Witness sent them to collect from it.
It’s one of the most interesting (and more importantly, realized in-game) Vex plotlines I can genuinely remember since Perfect Paradox during the Taken King, with them now working directly under orders from the Witness itself to enact multiple plans with backups in place as well. Granted to what extent their goal was to trap the subminds versus collect the data versus blow up the facility is certainly up for discussion and ironing out the specifics with, but the fact stands that they had multiple plans at play together operating on different levels of… intention (I guess is the best word I can think of)

Personally, it doesn't bother me, but I have to admit that I've noticed practically everything this season is reused from past content. We've got Bunkers from Season of the Worthy, we've got Cryptoliths from Season of the Hunt. We've got a giant shrieker boss in the first week that's ripped straight out of the vaulted Savathun's Song strike. We've also got Warmind nodes to collect straight from the Warmind expansion. Even then, the only reason this bothers me is because there appears to be very little original content / new additions, aside from the Dungeon environment and some of its gear (I'm not OK at all with them reusing seraph weapons in the loot pool when there are other seraph weapons in the WORLD loot pool currently), the seasonal weapons, part of the bunkers and the story itself.
All that said it's very early in the season, so we don't know what else is coming yet. But its a very short season, and we've also got the Dawning festival taking up a fair bit of time. I'm not expecting much length from the story, nor anything significantly new in any other bunker destinations we visit. It's very clear that Bungie spent very little time on the season compared to earlier seasons, but then again there's been a noticeable trend of reused content throughout this year, compared to last year's seasons. I hope this means that we can expect a sizeable update when Lightfall launches, because overwise I have to wonder what Bungie have been working on. They've clearly shown they can do more, with last year's seasons and the Witch Queen expansion, and whilst I appreciate their desire not to overdeliver and increase our expectations, presently our expectations are seeing the game move in a downwards trend. Not that I speak for everyone of course.
Sorry for piggybacking off of my initial reply to your comment. Just my two cents on the current situation in Destiny.

Loving this dungeon. I've been craving a real "science-fiction" dungeon experience, since all the current ones have been more "fantasy". The atmosphere felt top notch honestly, and after multiple runs, it's still hitting really good. The major point that has stuck out to me about this dungeon is that it FEELS like playing an old-school FPS, like Half Life 2 or something. The mechanic feels ripped out a level, and the climb/descent of the Spire feels like something that would happen in a campaign level. Once you learn how it works, it comes naturally. You're running through the environment, solving puzzles and making progress. It's a feeling I haven't felt in Destiny in awhile, especially not it's general gameplay. Was a refreshing trip and I'm excited to do a lot more of this.

I don't think this dungeon has problems until you get to the first boss. First bit is teaching you about the main mechanic, first encounter builds on the mechanic by adding some at times very dicey platforming, especially if you're as bad as me. The first boss, besides the copy and paste job, essentially does a big taken phalanx blast at the end of a damage phase. I find this to be a problem because, on titan and warlock, it is very difficult to recover from getting booped off, and on hunter, you have one or two jumps to reverse trajectory, otherwise you're dead. Once we get grappling abilities in lightfall this may be more forgivable, on strand subclasses specifically. I was soloing the first boss and I got him down to half health, but at the end of one of the damage phases I tripped over my shoelaces and fell into one of the gaps in the platform right as the boss booped, and because destiny physics are actually a cruel trick by baphomet, I ate [redacted] and wiped. I eventually beat him, and made my way to Mr. Wyvern. My one complaint with the final boss is the supplicants, they are extremely annoying regardless of class or subclass (maybe sans stasis as I was running well in my solo) because they love to hug your feet and detonate extremely quickly. My strat for now is to actually run up to them, jump, and immediately icarus dash backwards, otherwise a bow tends to one-shot if you hit their eyes. Good-ish dungeon, sometimes super obnoxious mechanics and elements that make me wanna throw my monitor out a window.

Probably my favorite dungeon to date mechanic wise (although I haven't played grasp yet). The mechanic felt clear, concise, and very easy to figure out. It focuses on gunplay more than "kill this, pick this up, maybe dunk it here" like most of the other dungeons. I think of it like a wild west gunslinger target practice time trial. My first experience was blind solo, and I've gotten the solo flawless (suffered at the last boss a lot I will say), but learning to get through each encounter/phase with only one buff felt very rewarding.
Akelous felt like a preface to the second mechanic as you had to shoot all the red eyes very quickly, just like lighting up red wires quickly. Slightly upset that it was a recycled asset, but I'm thinking it fit perfectly because of how similar it is to the actual dungeon mechanics. Rapidly popping the all the eyes quickly by one tapping them with something like a sidearm or a hard hitting trace rifle. Feels good.
Only thing is the final boss was a bit of a slog because of how much health it had, but I think mixing the red and yellow wire mechanic was great.

The hardest part in this dungeon imo are the supplicants as you're trying to power the nodes at the final boss room. The only time they make a sound is when they're about to blow up.

Grand Overture actually worked really well for the final boss for solo flawless. If you prepare a rocket burst beforehand, and still have 20 rounds, you can get off the rocket burst, all 20 rounds, and another full rocket burst before the phase ends. I had a few scuffed damage phases and took around 7-8 total, but if you can consistently get all the damage off it could be done in as little as 5, maybe even 4 with the right buffs/debuffs. Heavy ammo economy was okay with 2 Finders + 1 Scavenger, though farming for heavy ammo was still definitely the most time consuming aspect.
Also for those unaware: Grand Overture rockets can actually be stored up by hits on immune enemies, so a rocket burst can be prepared by shooting the boss before the damage phase.

I gotta disagree with the speed at which the duality boss can be dealt with. At our best, we were wiping the floor with the whole boss encounter with a record 3 minutes and thirty ish seconds, with the bells taking no more than 2 mins if going at a rapid pace. If we were to mess it up, it would take as long as the spires boss encounter mechanic, equating to around 2 minutes. While I do prefer spire more in terms of pacing and overall fun factor, saying duality is slightly worse due to mechanic time isn’t particularly valid (and yes I could just be an elitist or something idk and if that’s the case just ignore this comment altogether).

Also, I want to be easy on Bungie for "reusing content" when we're so close to getting light fall now. They probably just have more assets on that but still need to keep us busy till then. Honestly the dungeon didn't feel short to me, rather it felt "fast" instead if that makes sense, but I also spent 11 hours doing a solo clear on day one so that may have skewed my perception.
It's a VERY intense solo experience to be sure because doing the mechanics require you to look away from the enemies and everything is focusing on you, like you basically can't hit nodes while the boss is chasing you in the final encounter so you have to constantly flip which room you're in to make sure you don't get nuked.
First encounter was still kinda easy though, like easier than the gateway encounter I'd say but it had more of an emphasis on platforming so that's probably why combat was more toned down.
I'd say overall I agree it's hard for me to rank Dungeons, because to me Dungeons as whole are S-tier content and I'm really happy that we're getting them more regularly now. (One Dungeon a year just didn't feel like enough before.)

Personally, I'm a huge fan. I really enjoy the aestetic along with every encounter. Every single thing makes me feel engaged. I don't feel like I'm forced to slave through certain mechanics and although they are straightforward, they still bring excitement with the large amount of ads. The pacing also feels really good where I can get it done pretty quickly, but not so fast that everything feels like a blur. Lastly, with the part about reusing bosses, I'm not really a fan either, but people are so uncreative. Like this boss wiped your team a lot. And the vex think it is powerful enough to guard whatever the GOS is. Why wouldn't they reproduce it and make more on the same scale? Like they mass produce goblins and ads, so why would they not build another model of a protector of vex secrets? I think that's its kind of cool, sure it's bold to copy paste, but I think if you think about it, it can be a fun but of information to wrap your head around.
Edit: For crafted weapons, I agree there is a lot, and random rolls become kinda pointless if everyone is using the same crafted God roll. But it makes the game less enjoyable for me when I run a dungeon near 50 times and have all horrible rolls. Like the other day, I was cleaning my vault and I had 27 Jurrassic greens, none of which were good in the slightest. There was one roll that was interesting, but I was really shooting for the new pvp God roll. Which I didn't get. And I know that example doesn't align with dungeons, but that's on an easier scale. I ran only the required amount of 30 to get the title guilded, and had a bunch. Meanwhile I have less of a chance during a longer duration in dungeons. The odds falter immensely out of my favor in dungeons.

I’m going to sound like a complainer, but I want to say it:
The dungeon would be fine if the two weapons in the paid content in the game didn’t have two rediscovered weapon from a damn year ago.
And because of that, I’m not touching the dungeon. I do not mind having specific loot be part of a dungeon, that is the lure for people who want to do the dungeon and don’t mind paying for it. But the Seventh Seraph guns didn’t need to be in this loot pool. It literally would have fit more in this season’s weapon pool, not a paid dungeon that had two guns from over a year ago.
Let me specify, I know the dungeon from the Nine did bring back old guns, but those guns were sunset and it fit the theme and lore of the dungeon itself, hence why I’d didn’t mind it too bad.
If they wanted to bring some of the older season guns into the dungeon, take Season Of Undying. At least the Vex themed guns would have made sense there given what we fight.
But I digress. Point is, the loot for the Seventh Seraph being in a dungeon for a set of weapons that are not even that old….I’ll have to pass. I have my own roll for the Carbines and the HC and I’ll pass on this content.

I really love it. Gives me Scourge vibes, in that it has a cool aesthetic and also is pretty laid back, but not in a boring way. I enjoy that the focus of the mechanics is on platforming, because as I've gotten better run after run, I am starting to ZOOM past each of the node sections. idk, it just feels cool being able to zip around, juking enemies and hitting all the nodes at lightspeed.
Also kinda curious Datto mentions not liking the first boss is the same design as from Garden. Does he hold this same opinion on very nearly every other dungeon boss in the game? idk, I've just seen a LOT of people bring up this complaint, but then act like it hasn't literally always been like that. Personally, I love it. That boss is one of the only things I actually like from Garden, and it's a design we've only seen ONE time, as opposed to all the variations of ogres, captains, archon, wizards, etc. The mechanics that lead up to damage phase are what generally make a boss unique, once you're actually DOING damage, the the ogres largely behave like ogres, the captain is a captain, the archon is an archon, etc. This garden boss is cool to me BECAUSE we've only seen that design one other time, so I think it's a little strange people are singling it out as strongly as they are.

The shorter final boss feels so great especially on Master mode, one of the reasons I never did Master Duality was just because it took so long to finish the final boss, compared to Grasp being streamlined. This time I’m definitely artifice farming with a team on the final boss since we can finish a run in less than 10 minutes

Got the bow on my first run blind which felt great and never happened to me before! It's a fun bow but a little mechanical and complex for practical use, fun for lower level stuff. The guidance rings look and function awesome, and multiple bows can use the same ring which is extra cool.

I solo'd my way all the way to the first boss fight on day 1, and I was loving every second. I didn't even mind that I was fighting Vex (and I hate fighting the Vex) because it's the Sol Divisive. We haven't heard from then since Season of the Undying, so it was nice to get a clue as to what they're up to now.
Could I solo this whole dungeon? Yes, absolutely.
    Do I want to? Ehh...
I could solo the first two encounters (probably flawlessly, at that) but I have no idea how I'm going to not-die all the time in the final boss fight. And that's if the fans don't have me tearing my hairs out XD

I've been loving the dungeon. Now course parts of it are frustrating like the Wyern boss... ugh. But overall the weapons, the theme, the relevance, the armour... all good.

Solo experience definitely wasn't a slog. Got it done in less than an hour on my 4th or 5th attempt. Each time I failed, I pushed myself to run it faster and faster. Ended up clearing all the way to the first boss in less than 7 minutes, killing nothing but 2 minotaurs along the way (1 in each encounter). It's an absolute blast to speed run solo and felt really rewarding to conquer the required 5+ DPS phases per boss. Loved it so much more than Duality, which was just dying to jetpacks and random teleport deaths and bullshit stomps off ledges, etc.

My friends hated the dungeon but for me it was a lot of fun. I liked it way more than Duality, I don't know why I just did. I think you nail it. Maybe I enjoy dungeons that feel a bit shorted. I remember one run of Duality and I was done, not really one that I would enjoy doing three times.

I quite liked the dungeon. And I actually am a fan of the Harpy GoS Boss - I love GoS and I love that big fishy boi. It's cool seeing that enemy roam around, be more lethal, and used outside of a raid. And I love the wyvern.....those "chickens" are the deadliest enemy in the game (both as a red bar and a boss). Would be cool to see more iteration on the mechanic, another encounter, and bad dmg phases not a slog - yes, but it was still fun. And master day 1 while -25 under with no good artifact mods (was rank 20 at the time) was both frustrating and kinda rewarding to get it done under such harsh conditions.

I really love the platforming part during combat and the final boss, really feel like a big difference in speed and execution from the first time doing it to now, even during my first playthrough I felt my speed increase throughout it which was nice

I did my Master Mode run Saturday at 1589 light. I gotta say, that final boss was the most difficult encounter since probably master exhibition

I've only done this dungeon solo... Since I only play solo or matchmakers.
From that point of view, this dungeon is my favorite. The pace is good and the feeling of having something on your heels wanting to kill you nearly the entire time is fun.
I'm not a fan of overly complex puzzles or co-op mechanics in a game. They just don't stand the test of time. The first time you figure it out, is the last time you'll enjoy it (from then, you'll do everything possible to shorten or skip it).

The seventh seraph weps ruined my first run becuase I got only chests and the revolver. But on my second run I got the gl which I’ve absolutely loved because of the second grenade allows for some stupid nuts damage with spike nades.
