Destiny 2: My Favorite (& Least Favorite) Day 1 Raid Race Experiences

  • While writing my tier list of my favorite raids, I had some changes that I wanted to make that would stop me from putting out the video. So I made this one instead, which did not require many changes. The day 1 raid experience is vastly different from the day to day experience of clearing the raid, so I thought I'd compose this list in addition to my favorite raids. That video is being worked on.

I remember waking up early the day of the Last Wish race, tuning into your stream and watching until I had to go to work. Luckily the restaurant was dead quiet all day, so I got to peak in every thirty minutes or so to see how you were progressing with the rest of Math Class. I got out of work around 10:30 that night, and watched until I passed out around 3am. I woke up the exact moment you dumped Riven's heart into the shrine, watching and waiting to see if you had beat the 24 hour mark. I remember the sound of defeat in all of your voices when you found out about your 24:02 finish, I remember how proud of you chat (myself included) were when you finally crossed that just out-of-reach finish line. That raid race inspired me to start running Day 1's ever since. So even if you didn't get the top slot in the World's First race you got the top slot in my heart, Datto. Your effort to Destiny and its' community is tremendous and everyone here loves you for it. See you in the next raid race, I'll let you hold the belt when I get it

Hey Datto, would LOVE IT if you considered making a video about how YOUR team specifically prepares for events like this! As you may know, Deep Stone Crypt had the highest number of players attempting a day one ever, and I'm sure the Witch Queen raid will top those numbers, so it is very much apparent that new players dig this stuff! It would be great to hear how people who place very highly (such as you and your team) prepare mentally/physically and so on.

My team and I spent 21.5 hours in Deep Stone day 1: one of our teammates got arrested and his replacement was at a party so we spent like an hour or two sitting at atraks waiting to get the full squad again.

On DSC my team cleared the first actual encounter just a few minuets after you did but then got pub stomped at Atraks. We spent 13 hours on that encounter before giving up. Although it was a bitch I am proud of our team for our first day 1 raid attempt. When we returned for VoG we moved quickly making it to gatekeeper before worlds first but then spent 8 hours on Atheon before beating him.

I remember vividly going to bed while you guys were on Riven... and then waking up and you were still on Riven. It was admittedly not a full night's rest because I'd stayed up late watching, but even now it's difficult to describe how it felt seeing you grind away at it for so long.
Also that Crown of Sorrows debacle is heartbreaking and my heart hurts for you even after all this time.

My favorite experience was deep stone crypt. Although it was easy it was my first real attempt and clear for day one, it was easily the most fun I’ve had in the game, probably any game I’ve played. Took us 14 hours to complete and when we did I had a true smile on my face for the first time in years. If you haven’t even attempted a day one raid I highly recommend it.

My only slight day 1 experience was D2 VoG and by slight I mean I didn't have a team to go in with, so I tried the intro encounter just to know what Contest mode feels like. I still don't have a team nor a friend group for Witch Queen, but I'll still play the opening encounter and test it out. Now then, I'm going to go into the Pit of Hersey to practice solo ad control. Good luck to everyone who attempts World First and have fun in Witch Queen. 👍

As a spectator, Last Wish was epic! Watching the top teams go through the raid and hitting volt was crazy. And being in the dreaming city when the worlds first completed the race and getting the cut scene was something I will always remember. I then tuned back into your stream to watch you complete it after 24:02.

  • @newtypeshot

DSC was heartbreaking for me, which is a shame because it’s one of my favourite raids. In the first encounter we figured it out in a few runs (we actually overcomplicated it by doing it the challenge mode way on day 1) and that brought so much momentum going into Atraks, and then we just faceplanted into a wall. Part of it was definitely the health rubber banding issue that Atraks had on day 1, but we also just made dumb mistakes and had some people that stubbornly refused to change loadouts that weren’t working. We ended up stuck at Atraks for 14 hours and called it quits at like 5 or 6 in the morning, and never finished it day 1. It’s a shame because the space walk with Deep Stone Lullaby is one of my favourite Destiny experiences to date, and I’ve seen SO many people talk about how special it was after finally getting past Atraks and really wish I got to experience it. Crown was actually one of my favourite day 1 experiences, and the boss fight was one of my favourites for a while. We didn’t even plan to run the raid day 1 because we thought we didn’t have a team, but by chance ended up with 6 people online and decided to go for it. I was really proud of how well we did figuring out the mechanics and performing in the boss fight under context, and I think if one of our guys hadn’t rage quit we might have had a day 1 clear. I don’t remember exactly but I think we were in the top 10 teams to clear it on console in the first week.

My only day 1 raid experiences were Crown and Deep Stone, getting carried by people who were on their third or fourth run. Really fun experiences, really made me appreciate that portion of the destiny community who will just replay things so that other people can experience it. Also, after that first run in Crown I started sherpa-ing a lot of people through that raid, especially during MOT, and really got a kick out of that.

Day 1 DSC is my favorite so far, we struggled a bunch on Crypt Security for dumb reasons, just not figuring out that we need to pass scanner down stairs for DPS phase. By the time we got to Atraks-1 we looked up strategies, which killed some of the blind prog experience but I'll never forget my first time going in the launch pod

I remember doing eater of worlds on day one, your explanation as to why it was ranked so low was perfect. It was way too easy, but I guess technically it was meant to be that way since it was called a raid lair. Definitely going to do witch queen raid on day one cause nothing is cooler in this game when you figure it out with minimal or no help.

I got into Destiny shortly after D2 launched on PC. Leviathan was one of my favorite activities to play, but I didn't really play the game super regularly until black armory. It took a long time for me to build up the confidence to attempt day 1 raid. My first was DSC and I wear that emblem with pride. 15 hours, 7 of them at Atrax. Status Calamitus is burned into my brain. Went on to do VoG2.0 blind day 1 cause no one on my team played D1. Can't wait for witchqueen to try it again.

  • @burns0100
    @burns0100 2 года назад +4

I have to agree with most of this list, only swapping a few around by one position. Last Wish for me has been Bungie's pinnacle raid experience in my eyes. Vault of Glass always holds a special spot for being the first Raid I've ever done and Kings Fall is near the top for being that massive refresh we all needed in Taken King but for me Last Wish was just so damn perfect with the entire story of the dreaming city, the fact we could see the raid in the open world and just the scale of the raid plus it was maybe the first raid for me were I took part in the worlds 1st race, though my team didn't beat it until day 3 so that was a bust. Still we remember being just as fast as everyone else on the first boss, but the Vault grinded us to a halt real quick lol.
I still look at Last Wish as a fond memory, I just enjoy that even beyond a raid now it's fun to use it for catalysts and even just to glitch into and explore around the area's and play mini games like hide and seek in.
Great video Datto. I love these look back styles where you give us more input on things and be proud of that 24:02:00 that's dedication.

That face when datto ranks your two favorite day ones as the worst, feels bad.
Also, that feeling about dsc feeling too easy after a year of no raids is hugely relatable, especially after the thrill and how hard sanctified mind was. I don't know if was the huge difficulty or the feel of the older raids, but I really hope the witch queen raid delivers big on difficulty in both mechanics and enemies, cuz I just haven't felt pumped since gos, or maybe even before that back with lw.

    • @henryzelman4541

I feel like the reason DSC was so easy was due to the fact that the adds just didn't do shit in that raid for some reason. Like on contest mode, people just ran double slug + anarchy since the adds couldn't even kill you lmao. The chaos room in any other raid would've been a death sentence due to add density but in this one it was a joke.

Definitely a soar spot haha

Day 1 Wrath when we didn't have a full team. My best friend, myself and our 3rd went in to "have a look". Figured out the mechanics at the entrance and just as we were on the last damage round before he teleported away another friend joined the chat party and was not ready for the bombardment of "get in here" he was about to receive. We spent the next few hours exploring and figuring out the next encounter but had to wait for a full team to get a completion.

I've only cared about the blind experience (just getting the clear while being underleveled and having to figure everything out is enough of an ask without also competing with the pros out there) and the 24-hour emblem, which I started seriously going for with Crown of Sorrow. I *really* wanted that emblem; it's gorgeous. But I was stuck on the underleveled chaos of the final encounter for like 12 hours, going from team to team on LFG after my clan went to bed, trying to find people who could get it done. Towards the end I was so depressed, and I was literally falling asleep during attempts. That was a hard defeat, but after the level difference ceased to be an issue Gahlran eventually became one of my all-time favorite raid encounters. I finally got a 24-hour emblem with Deep Stone Crypt, where my team cleared it in around 11 hours, and I hope to again in whatever The Witch Queen has to offer us. Here's hoping the emblem's a pretty one.

Only had a few Day 1 experiences as a on-off player (I'll usually play for a few weeks very solidly at the start and end of a season and play other games in the middle)
Finished none of them on day 1 but found them all awesome because going in with a totally blind fireteam working out the mechanics for yourselves as you go and seeing some of the locations for the first time is awesome.
(My day 1s were: Wrath, Garden & Vault of glass D2 edition)
Pretty sure we died at least twice in the fields of cyclopses just from admiring the view.
Bonus points to leviathan for going in blind as a team but not day 1; that entrance felt stunning at the time in its scale.

I have only did 2 day one raids (Wrath of the Machine and Deep Stone Crypt) but Ive been an avid player of the game for awhile. Day one DSC was hands down, the most memorable and fun time I've ever had with my clan, Garrison. We took 6th, but we actually made it to boss first and made it through Atraks fairly fast compared to other teams, which even tho we didn't finsih it first was a huge W for us since it was our first race together. Wether you win or lose, I HIGHLY reccomend partaking in this race, just for the experience.

  • @clarkwilson9520
    @clarkwilson9520 2 года назад +3

Only tried day one twice. In DSC, we got to Atraks pretty quickly, only like an hour and a half of effort. We were stuck on atraks for 10 hours I think, not including like 2 hours of down time so people could take care of responsibilities (including me taking an online final for a class). We beat her at like 6 in the morning and we're all too tired to even bother trying to finish it so we didn't even attempt phase 1 Taniks.
In VoG, we were stuck on templar for like 6 hours and then people started fighting and the team dissolved. So DSC was way more fun

I have only participated in three Day 1 experiences: King's Fall, Deep Stone Crypt, and Vault of Glass in D2.
King's Fall was a ton of fun, but also a lot of stress, because at the time, I just started uni, so I wasn't grinding levels like crazy. I don't quite remember which level we started at, but at Totems, I was like, 30 light underleveled, so we actually had to back out, grind some levels, and come back a couple hours later just to have a chance. We ended up reaching the Deathsingers, and we were pretty beaten up at that moment.
Deep Stone was a journey. We spent like 8 straight hours on Atraks-1, and after 16 or so hours in the raid, we had to leave, because we were wiping out of tiredness.
Almost the same experience with VoG 2, since we spent like 4 hours in Oracles, just because we weren't gaming, another 4 in Templar, a couple in Gatekeepers, and the rest of the time at Atheon. Left at the 13 or 14th hour in because we weren't giving the right callouts, not even reaching the challenge mode.
I am still pumped for Witch Queen to try to get a Day 1 emblem for the first time.

My first day 1 experience was deep stone crypt. Not the fondest but I still enjoyed it. We were going into it JUST with the intent of clearing it day one. Had some friends watching us, as I was streaming, and we got thru the first encounter super fast according to them. I feel like that info sorta bogged us down tho, cause we all got amped from it-- but IMMEDIATELY got curb stomped at atracks. So much so that like 2 of our fire team members called it quits after a few attempts. Was really bummed that we couldn't keep going but oh well. Excited to try again for witch queen

I really hope this next raid in WQ will be something to give you, Datto, the excitement you have been looking for.
She is the Hive god of trickery, so maybe no encounter will run in any standard way. Here's to hoping.

My first Day 1 raid experience was running VoG 2 electric boogaloo. Mainly the gatekeeper encounter and trying to kill Atheon. I instantly picked up on Atheon’s oracles memory game and told my team about it. Ended up dipping at like 4am after trying to kill Atheon for a solid 4 and a half hours. It was fun though and PvE endgame content finally sunk their fangs into me.

For you I can see y raid race would be stressful; y’all have gotten shafted so many times regardless of that fact that y’all deserve a W. But for my friends and I, a clear day one is just satisfying since we’d never been able to do stuff like you legends have before. After growing up watching these races it’s just crazy fun to finally take part in them. I could care less about worlds 1st but if it did happen my undies and trousers would simply be soiled beyond human comprehension.

VoG D2 was my first day 1 raid. I was new to the game at that time, DSC was the only raid I knew well, with one or two clears of LW and GoS each. I didn't have a lot of good weapons or mods, and I wasn't good at the game in general back then. My team was kinda a bunch of randoms from my clan who didn't have a team but wanted to raid. I had fun. I did get PTSD dreams where I heard Oracles and Gorgons for the next few days though. It was stressful but still fun, and I look forward to the WQ day 1 raid as a much more prepared player now.

I've only ever been able to attempt 2 day 1s (DSC and VoG) as I never had a consistent raid group up until that point. Out of the original fireteam for our DSC, only 2 of us actually remained upon completing it 18 hours after it came out. I was running completely on Monster and Advil at that point, but that's to this day the best experience I've had in any game. That emblem will NEVER come off, even if I get day 1 Witch Queen raid.

My VoG 2 team was way underprepared so we didn't get far, but honestly I had a lot of fun trying to solo Oracles day 1. I didn't quite get it, despite some super-close attempts, but once contest left I think I got it first or second try.

I've only been around for 2 day 1 raids and had to LFG both of them, Deep Stone was one hell of an experience but getting the clear on hour 26 felt like a slap in the face. We couldn't make DPS because all of the good options had been vaulted (I started playing during Arrivals), at least not during Contest. Ton of fun and some of the highest highs I've had playing Destiny, but it was pretty crushing not getting the day 1.
VoG, on the other hand, was miserable. Not because of the raid itself, but because of the inability to find teams that were willing to allow people with no D1 raid experience in, plus the stress of having to do two contest mode raids in 24 hours in addition to every challenge was a bit too much. Ended up running out of time on the normal Atheon run. Really hope future reprised raids don't force you to do this.

My only experience with Day one raid racing is with Deep Stone Crypt. My uncle had gotten really into the game (I already was) and he bought us both Beyond Light. We grinded for hours every day and were doing really well for ourselves. When DSC was announced, he texted me and all he said was "We're doing it". And we did, we got to light level, started streaming, and hopped into the raid. Things were going well in the beginning, we were keeping up with most of the high end raid teams, we thought we might get a high placing, and then Atraks came in and killed the run. We played dsc for about 16-17 hours that day, no bathroom breaks or food breaks and didn't end up beating it. But the fun we had, the banter, the hope, and the great teamwork is what makes it my favorite destiny experience.

My buddies and I tried to do Leviathan on Day 1, but we never even got close to the top of the leaderboard then. We also tried Garden on Day 1, which was a much more enjoyable experience for all of us (even though we didn't get close to Top 30). Even so, I'd do the With Queen raid with them again on Day 1 because I feel like we're so much more prepared this time around.

DSC will always be my fav day 1 experience and raid of all time. There was just something about the launch of beyond light and getting that day 1 clear after spending almost 8 hours on atraks that felt so rewarding. Never gotten a day one, got pretty dang close on Wrath (got to boss), Spire (boss, again) and VoG 2.0 (Gatekeeper was just kicking our ass on contest) . Probably could have done Eater but my D1 crew had left the game at that point so I was in a limbo for non-matchmaking stuff at the time.
People play for different things, for me the day one is absolutely about the novelty, seeing the new loot, enemy designs and music over the competition, would still be thrilled to make that 24 hour deadline for WQ though

I never had friends to play Destiny with until just before the launch of Destiny 2. I was fortunate enough to be brought back by a friend who played the entirety of D1 with me and I’m so grateful for it. Leviathan was my first raid and I finished it week 1 no glitching. So, day 1 DSC was really special to me. It was at a point in my Destiny career where, having been in the game since Dark Below, I started to wonder if I'd ever be challenged again. I couldn't participate in Crown or Garden due to technical difficulties and not having a team respectively. But this time? I was going All. The. Way. I jumped in on the day 1 team early in my new clan, and we went in and got stuck on Atraks-1 for about... 5, maybe 6 hours? This was a mind-melting experience, let me tell you that. Eventually, we figured out that yes, the DPS window is indeed that small, and about a thousand attempts later we beat her. Then came the spacewalk. That... was really incredible. It was such a perfect moment after so much suffering. After we beat the Descent, we had to go to sleep. We reconvened at like 7AM EST to finish off Taniks and that was it. I still got the group photo we took with the body.
I'd finally gotten the challenge I wanted, but that was the furthest thing from my mind at that moment. In fact, NOTHING was on my mind. See, the final clear time came in at about 10 HOURS. That is the longest gaming session I'd ever pulled and I straight up lost touch with reality. I had to go say hello to everyone I knew because my brain felt like it got hit with a factory reset. It was a miracle I knew my own name. I was really sad to see contest mode go that reset though. Highly recommend.

I came to the game after Forsaken had launched and never participated in the day one raids until Garden of Salvation. That was a good experience, although we didn't get a day one clear on that. I stayed up so long and so many team mates got swapped out, but in the end we just couldn't get it done. Although, it turned out to be a great experience as I met many people through LFG that joined our clan that I play with to this day.
Deep Stone Crypt was one that I did day one, but I'm still pissed off that my group quit with about two hours to go until the contest was over. We absolutely had it in the bag and the next pull or so would have done it. We were super close but some people just couldn't keep going. This was also crappy as ours was one of the first teams to get past Atraks-1 during the contest.
Vault of Glass was one that no one in the clan really seemed to care about. Most bailed on the contest with tons of time to spare. I'm not sure why.
We will be running the day one when Witchqueen comes out, but my experiences doing the day one raids are a mixed bag to say the least. Out of the three I've done, I probably enjoyed Deep Stone the most. Outside of Atraks, I don't think it was really all that hard. Garden was a beating on the other hand. That last boss was a nightmare early on.

But day 1 DSC my god that was 20 hours of something, not sure if joy, or sadness, or just a sense of relief.
The main things that I will forever remember about that raid where our kills on Atrax and Taniks and the SpaceWalk. Both Taniks and Atrax died as the wipe timer was at 0 not even sure how but they died and the space walk after the gauntlet that was Atrax it felt like an out of body experience.

Even though I don't have no day 1 experience when it comes to raids, I absolutely made sure I was at least in the raid for Garden on day 1. I matched with an LFG group and they were the most chillest guys I've ever played with. The atmosphere was great and I felt comfortable since it wasn't so competitive but rather "lets play and have fun and see if we can beat it." It was the most fun I had in Destiny.
Our group was so chill that during the 2nd encounter we used baseball terminology for the callouts of the relay points.
    Angelic at 3nd base!
Wave the runner home I need a buff!
Angelic is trying to steal 2nd!
"Bit exaggerated" but that's basically how it went and I loved it.
We managed to complete that encounter and the atmosphere was amazing. Unforunately they all had to go and I was never able to get back in contact with them. One of those in the moment moments.
2nd for me has to be completing VoG for the first time. I'll remember every single one of us screaming as if we won the super bowl. It was... Unbelievable.
I know a lot of people find fun in chasing after that worlds 1st. But for me personally, I enjoy the experience of playing a new raid and figuring out the mechanics :)

Vault of Glass in Destiny 2 was first day one raid. I spent at normal mode raid 12 hours and 29 minutes and didn't beat it, because I and people that I played with (team was formed at LFG Discord literally 5 minutes before day one raid started) didn't have enough damage to kill Atheon. Datto, before raid I watched your D1 VOG guide to be familiar with mechanics, I didn't want to do blind run day one raid.
