Hey everyone! I made a mistake! LOL In section eight, which starts at 10:32 , look at the last two notes in the 2nd box... 10th fret B string, followed by 10th fret E string. Those notes should be played at the ninth fret! Therefore, please replace those with 9th fret B string, followed by 9th fret E string. Sorry for any confusion I caused! :) Thank you Andy Brown for pointing it out!
Oh man, for sure... as much as I love him, I really feel like he was still developing when we hear him on the studio albums. Then you hear him take it up a notch on the live Tribute album. What a loss...
Its ONLY within the past few years that I've been seeing accurate versions of Randy solos regularly, especially this one. The fact that it took nearly a half century for the skills/info to reach avg players, says quite a bit. At the time, the # of players that could pull it off(to my satisfaction anyway), was few & far between. Never even mind 100% digital with independent pitch & tempo but, just imagine trying to copy such things before even CD's with A->B repeat. All we had was vinyl to wear out & tapes to slightly slow down while F'n up your tuning, & occasional random info that might be useful if you were lucky from magazines & such. What a time to be alive ! This is perhaps thE best yet though & makes this channel sub worthy for this alone IMO.
You are without a doubt one of the best guitar teachers on RUclips or anywhere else for that matter and as a player you are extremely awesome !!! Please don't ever stop playing or teaching !!! More Dave Murray and Adrian Smith please !!!
Your transcriptions are always so accurate! Painstaking isn't it? LOL Thanks for all the hard work! Also, your teaching style is is so " user friendly". I've gotten more out your tutorials than anyone else's, by far! 😁
Great job. Thank you for sharing that - and clearly demonstrating each section. Your teaching ability is outstanding, as is your playing. Have a blessed day. 🙏🏽😊
@@PDXguitarfreak hey I had a question for ya. I saw that white SG you had in one of your other videos. I sold one to a guy a few years ago when I lived in PDX. I thought it would be crazy if you were the person I sold it too 🤣
Best thing about this video. You explain the phrasing. Although the audio/video clearly demonstrates the phrasing, the way the notes flow is as important as the notes themselves. Most RUclipsrs don't address this and for solos the feeling is everything. The choice between a slide vs. a hammer on or pull off is an important distinction. They might sound the same to the casual listener but those little details are what make the icing on the cake.
I get so excited when I see your video notifications pop up on my phone. I'm usually at work like I am now and I start watching the videos to get a jump on when I get home to work through it and learn it(or check if I'm even capable of playing them lol) this one is perfect
Wow!..like I always say....you are an amazing player and by far the best guitar teacher I've ever seen. Keep up the great work and thank you for all you have done and do! Cheers!
Thank you for this incredibly accurate and easy to follow along lesson from the great Randy Rhodes. If you're looking for suggestions, a lesson on Randy's Children of the Grave solo from the Tribute album would be an excellent choice!!
Damn bud that lesson was taught perfectly, exacuted to the note and open notes wish I saw your video before . Really I'm out now but can't wait to get home and practice this . Thanx bud hope you have others will look when this ones mastered
How about a little taste of revelation mother earth next? When that distortion kicks in it's just NASTY! Nice work as always my man! Slaying it as usual with a the little subtle nuances that most leave out.
Nice work Dave - Interesting solo where Randy used 1/2 step note groupings to provide a bit of tension - I think I saw a diminished run in there. Keep Rockin'
Thanks for the great lesson. I was wanting something new to work on this weekend! Perfect. Just some Trivia- S.A.T.O stands for Sharon Arden, Sharon Osborns maiden name, and Thelma Osbourne, the name of Ozzy's first wife. I think at one time is was to be call Sail Across the Ocean. But it was kept S.A.T.O for the two wife's of OZZY.
Awesome tutorial and thanks for breaking it down like that. do you recall that stupid rumor that was going around about Ozzy at that time? That he bit the head off of a live bat. Ah, the good old days.
LOL thanks Dave! And actually I heard the rumor was true! Apparently someone threw a dead bat on stage, and Ozzy thought it was a rubber one, so he bit the head off LOL :) Definitely the good old days, right? :)
I doublechecked my work, and slowed down the original track to verify (as I always do when transcribing). The first note you call out (13:59) is 17th fret... it's a very common doublestop technique, but I understand why you may think otherwise as your interpretation is a common technique too. The second note is also correct, at the 18th fret. You can certainly play it your way, and just bend up an additional 1/2 step, but the feel is altered slightly. Anyway, thanks for taking a listen bro.
@@PDXguitarfreak I understand that dominant tone hiding the sharper upper note such as at 13:59, yet your version does not sound as sharp to me as the recoding. Oh well! Still sounds good!
Dude... I LOVE that solo.. both the studio version and the live version on Captured. Neal is one of my all time favorites. I might have to do some Neal. :)
This is one of the songs that he borrowed the technique for certain parts from EVH, specifically “On Fire” by VH. Randy was so great at theory though, I would bet that he wrote a lot of stuff on paper before he even played them on the guitar. What kind of software do you use; Amplitube or Guitar Rig ?
I remember at the same time I was first learning Randy's solos as a teenager, I was learning scales too, and it was so great to see them pretty clearly in play in his solos... it was like each solo was a little lesson in theory LOL. As for my sound, I'm actually using a Helix. :)
My headache ❤said to me can you play that! I said it would take months to get a right...i forgot you are more than a VH...freak...you are a fabulous freak Brother! Remember them... never to old to get R.R. right..txs pdx...BLUES KING still...
Hey man nice playing but I was wondering if you could answer me a question I just started doing a RUclips channel and I posted a video of me playing this solo when I about nailed it it's perfect is it could have possibly been and it was blocked with a copyright claim and said it was unavailable to view in this country. How do you not get that I've got other videos that still have copyright claims but they say I'm allowed to use the video no I forget who it was s h a or s e m or something stupid like that.
I occasionally get those copyright notices, but I always push back through the appeal process and state that my video is done under the guise of "fair use" since it is intended to be educational. I get it reversed quite often by doing that. Also, I rarely use the original song as a backing track so that helps too. I hope that helps you!
Dude you a re a precision machine, and I love it hahaha!! But question....tuning?? EDIT : never mind the question about tuning, the hertz on my tuner were adjusted a few points down, but that's why I always trust my ear😉👍🤘
Also looks like at 11:10 you tabbed two notes on the tenth fret on the high E and B strings but played them on the ninth right or do my eyes deceive? Thanks Dave.
@@PDXguitarfreak dude totally not trying to embarrass you, honestly what you do takes a great amount of precision and you do it well. I go to your channel first because you are so accurate 👍🤘🎸
I’m sure I read the one on the album was a space saver for solo he never got to do because of time constraints and a tour, and he was pissed about it. Amazing years later we’re braking down him noodling around to waste time , no double or triple tracking It makes sense, still cool though.

Hey Sotirios! Thanks! In terms of how long it takes to pull one of these videos together, it really depends mostly on the solo and how complex it is. Many of these solos I knew from back in the day, but it's been so long, it's like learning from scratch most of the time. After learning or relearning it and getting it down clean, I have to transcribe it and create the tabs (pain in the ass LOL), then shoot the video, and them edit the audio and video. It can be quite laborious. Someone asked this other day... I think it's 10 to 20 hours of work. As for Frankenstein, I remember the metal band, Overkill, doing a cover of it around 30 years ago. Fun song! :)
