PRINCE & MORRIS DAY & The TIME The EDIT The MOVIE The SEQUEL w/Deleted Scenes

- THE TIME the edit the movie was a drama filled breakdown of friendship. Jesse Johnson lobbing some truth bombs regarding childhood bullying and the real reason Jimmy & Terry were a problem for Prince. Morris Day is looking at crystalizing himself into the zeitgeist. Prince is watching his master plan mature into ripeness. Prince's inner counterpuncher is motivated to created a new Time off the skeletal remains of the old Time. He will call them, the FAMILY. Its all too much to really take in so we edited this thang down and here it was. Time's Up.

Hey man I'm a HUGE HUGE HUGE Prince fan. I'm 51 and let me just say I've heard these stories before right of course. BUT what you've done with your edits to make a COMPLETE picture of events for people ...I'll tell ya man it's something VERY special what you've done here. No joke.
Every time someone comes with understanding of what I'm attempting it makes me smile :D
Morris was lucky after Purple Rain. He was doing alot to fuck his career - which was part of the reason Prince needed to be rid of him anyway. He would end up back at Prince's door - on drugs and needing money - at one point. Without Prince, there is no Morris Day. I give him credit for at least saying as much in his book.
I want more on Prince tearing down his Father's house. Seemed he buried things that hurt him
Love all the stories... thank you again.. RIP Prince
Jesse is my favorite! Another great 1 I’m always glad to see a deep dive. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿Thank you!
LOVE the feedback!
I loved both groups..I was a kid at this time and I loved when they played their songs on the radio back in the day. I had no idea about what was happening behind the scenes, and I wasn't old enough to see them live, I used to wish that I could get to see them back then..RIP Prince
I was in school working in retail. Morris and the Time came in. I waited on Morris. He was a jerk. I was hustling as a young man. A teenager. First job. I didn't need his bs. I switched with my co worker. I waited on the other gentleman. Never cared much for the Time. Loved Prince though.
Dang. What exactly was said. Wow.
@Romero R Sorry that happened to you.
Well, I'm sorry that happened... I've met/worked with quite a few celebs. And some led me to my personal philosophy... "It's best to NOT meet your idols if you want to maintain your idealistic view of them sometimes...." BUT ;) I hung out with Morris and the Time here in town after a concert, and Morris was the nicest dude in the room. You gotta grow up and realize that with age comes wisdom... Sometimes. They're people, experiencing things that are alien to a lotta folks.
Thank you Sinnik22 for these great timeless videos! Many of us did not grow up during the 80s and this really helps to give a vibe of that time. Great edits and great treatments. You Rock!!!
For all the people who said The Time was nothing but Prince, you are not correct. Look at what all the guys did on their own as far as producing, recording, and acting. Unreal talent. Wonder why he held them down!?!?
"What have you done for me" got him going. When he performed it live he say"who wrote that"
Do ya think Prince was shading Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis?
@@Sinnik22 them and Ms Jackson if ya nasty.
@@Sinnik22 jimmy jam didn’t go into details but he did say with success of Control album , he believe that Prince was jealous of him & Lewis !
Purple Rain movie made 70.3 million USD. The Purple Rain soundtrack sold 13 million copies. So that is a huge amount of money and The Time and the Revolution did not make anything significant to talk about.
I love this visualized story! ❤️☔
Here's the vibe I get from the history of The Time, Minneapolis music scene of the 70"s and what these legends are willing to allude to. Prince was not considered one of the fella's, he was probably poked fun at and even bullied. Andre was not to be played with and had more social credibility than Prince, thus he functioned as a sort of hall pass. When Prince, who never fit in socially stepped away on the sly and got a solo deal it added another layer of resentment. Then he started employing dudes that used to poke fun at him and they rebelled- which they were programmed to do anyway. Prince felt some kind of way about Jimmy and Terry before he brought them on board, so reducing them to a barely surviving entity for his funk music was not out of the question. Terry was a Varsity athlete as well as Jerome, there's a mindset and confidence a guy gets from being good at sports. Prince played sophomore but knew he wasn't big enough to play Varsity etc. There's some real Revenge of the Nerd's dynamic going on with Prince vs The Time. He knew they were bad and he knew the could compose, he just got off on being the only game in town for guys who used to tease him. Just a guess.
I like the supposition. One tidbit to bolster your theory. Prince didn’t want jimmy & Terry for the Time. Morris insisted on using them & flyte tyme
@@Sinnik22 Yes!. Prince even got off on having Morris in the room. What he didn't plan on was the fact that Terry and Jimmy saw through that and wanted Morris to shine in the movie. He also didn't plan on Jimmy and Terry being great songwriters and producers. They were actually less egocentric than Prince who had a personality forged in insecurity. Morris was more of a team player in who he brought into the time, Prince would have been happier if he brought in 5 dudes from five different bands.
A lot of the greatest ones are broken as people.
When Morris pushed him most of the band were living vicariously through him.
Men are funny about height, and it's not just the little guys, it's the bigger guys who have to be subjected to the little guys leadership. Most of them admit freely he's completely on a different level than them musically...they just wish he were taller lol. Had he not been a jerk they still would have resented the fact that he made them. There are words like mysogny ect, but none to describe that phenomenon among males. Steph Curry deals with some of that.
I love these longer episodes- thank you!
Everyone on RUclips says people can't handle more than 15 minutes. (shrug emoji)
@@Sinnik22 that's not true, we like a hour, good stuff. Thanks
I love the longer episodes too!!!!
@@Sinnik22 This is awesome thank you for this it takes me back in time 👍
Again, perfect timing! Just flipped on RUclips and there is another episode. I know it's great without watching yet. People Enjoy and share the site!

Exact same thing for me!
Jesse Johnson is my favourite guitarist. Very under rated. No 1 that I speak 2 knows who I'm talking about lol but he did a lot of soundtracks 4 popular 80's movies that they may know.
Jesse Johnson was a funky AF guitarist no doubt
@@Sinnik22 ❤️
Yes, I actually love his music that much I spent £53 pound on the ultimate Jesse Johnson cd lol worth it tho.
I believe the other guy's were haters!! Morris, jessie, and who ever was in that crew, listen to them talk about Prince, it's a lot of jealousy and Bulling. Prince probably was a control freak, but he was striving to become the world greatest entertainer of all time. I hate when they speak trash about Prince, like Prince said in his interview with Travis !!! we were in love then we should be in love now .and also he was told his so call friends talking behind his back say fucked up shit about him. It hurts him, wow, that hurt me to hear him say that. Now he doesn't have to worry about noone saying or doing anything to him now .R.I.P. PRINCE ROGER NELSON YOU WILL FOREVER BE MISSED 🎸💜💜💜💜💜😥
My theory is that people who were with him in the early days feel entitled to part of his legend. Deep down, they feel that he owes them something. Morris still complains about get $50K for Purple Rain - when that was the deal he signed. No one was going to put him in a major motion picture. Yes, he was a big reason it was a hit but it woudl not have existed without Prince.
Those guys want to claim their roles are greater than they were and that they were so pivotal in Prince's success. The fact of the matter is that they were sidemen - very good sidemen but sidemen just the same.
@@christophertracy2807true, im sure ego and entitlement has killed soooo many careers its not even funny, but i can understand how it would be hard for a grown man to accept riding bitch while prince drives the motorcycle when they want to be their own brand.
@@Garf2O What does that mean? Morris Day was never in a position to be "riding bitch". He owes the beginning of his long career and several of its highlights to Prince. There is no shame in that. He felt he need to break out on his own and was able to do some quality work. He was not entitled to anymore than he got and did not need to be as he leveraged what Prince give him to the max.
Prince said early in his career that he had to look out for himself because " what if everybody split ? ". 💔💔
Yup. He had some fear of abandonment
@@Sinnik22 😔🙏🏾❤️
So he used detachment strategies to control most of the people's departure. It's better to catch your issues before they run and ruin your life. He could have had it all and I'm not deluded enough to believe he had to be in tumult to create. He could have had his family and loyal friends as a constant. We all are our own worst enemies when we neglect our full persons and don't face our fears to fix problems. I'm glad I got to hear him talk about his dad not taking him back and his opinion of himself at that time.
I hate he micromanaged but so many branches came from his seed
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 Hearing them talk was again is everything, " Money changes you." powerful quote, Jesse J.'s part in all of this is interesting because he seems to be vilafied i and discounted but he was there.Paul leaving the band explained, This is another gem!
Another classic collection of material showing the whole other side of the Prince / MPLS movement. Thank you, this is an awesome Birthday gift, 3/15.
Maaaaaan, the HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎉🎁🎊🎂
@@Sinnik22 Gracias!!
I like seeing this side because they are not being condescending or taking anything away from the magic/genius of Prince trying to make themselves to be on the same level or that they- on the low- made Prince - Prince. I like these guys showing not all the good but the bad not so nice things.Love hearing from their own words that this was about the 1999 tour/Triple Threat Tour, I love that era-before they all left. They all must have amazing stories-including Jesse.
@@vashtix6812 - Sounds like didn't appreciate what Prince gave them. Further they didn't understand that Prince was the boss, it wasn't a partnership. He was the reason they had a career. Its not that Prince wasn't so nice, it was Prince being the guy running the show because he was in charge. He created the time,
This is just as greasy as "Tales From The Tour Bus". Love it ! Peace.
I woke up this morning and just happened to catch this!. Dude, I’ve been a HUGE fan of The Time since their second album! You are indeed crossin’ them eyes an’ dottin’ them tees! 😀
But once again, EVERYTHING is just so absolutely spot on! Incredible, incredible job!
Thank you for sharing I love it💜💕. This was pretty amazing i hope one day i can visit Paisley Park and first Avenue Stay safe bless and healthy California love 💜💛💕🌝
My pleasure
Hearing how close And far back Morris and Prince go kinda breaks my heart there was meaningless beef between the 2
PRINCE 🤴🏽REMEMBERED IN PERFECTION 🤲🏿🤲🏿. THE TIME, MORRIS DAY, JIMMY JAM AND TERRY LEWIS, JELLYBEAN JOHNSON.... UNTOUCHABLES!
Underrated
Thanks for all the hard work in putting this together in such a creative way and sharing with us all. Excellent.
Prince should not be forgotten. Prince should be remembered in painstaking detail.
I think that it was warner bros. & carvalo, ruffalo, and fargnoli that was constantly in his ears about payroll and who he was paying too much. That's why they were referred to as "those characters" on Prince unauthorized documentary VHS from 92'.
They don't want a artist being independent
😳 ❗😳 😍 taking my hat all the way off, to you Bro❗😂😂😂😍😍😍😍😍 I saw the Time live during the get it up album in my home town Greenwood South Carolina❗ mind gone❗💯😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😍👍
I couldn’t stop listening. Amazing job
Minneapolis is the Funk capital.
Paul started smelling himself too soon. I wonder if he would do something differently with the knowledge that he has now. He bailed on Prince - what did he expect Prince to do? No one outside of Minneapolis would know who he was without Prince. Jellybean made a good point about finishing the tour before leaving.
Excellent! Great job. Like I've said before, your work should be seen on a much bigger scale! Definitely more views.
All I can do is put it out there and hope eventually folks will accept
Once again thank you!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
You are so welcome!

I worked 12 hrs and found these vids, I can't sleep
WHO KNEW PRINCE WAS THIS CONTROLLING
I get the feeling he either had to be or thought he did
I love the behind the scenes of the truth.
Humbled bruh. Thank you
In my opinion...THE TIME was the tightest band of all time.
I believe that Prince intentionally didn't allow himself to get too close to his "friends" for fear of getting hurt. Kind of like one of those no expectations no disappointments
I think was like that wit so many people even Mayte
When u become a boss u gotta separate from the employees. Can't do homeboy business, because they r looking 2 suck up and take advantage
Really digging these long form videos.
Great I’d to see you GC
You can bitch about Prince firing Jam and Lewis, And you can see how they were taking the opportunities to make some more money since their salaries from Prince were not cutting it. But why not tell Prince upfront that this is what you are going to do since he was not paying you enough? Perhaps it would have been leverage to get a raise. If not, part ways and avoid the professional breach of missing a show. When you do that, you are messing with your employer's business. Prince was their employer.
They claimed they asked for a raise & Prince denied them !
GREAT VIDEO DOCUMENTARY 🔥🔥🔥💜💜💜
If Andre would have kept his sound from the beginning that he helped to create he would have been so huge. I have been listening to his earlier stuff and he was bad azz!
I just heard Kelly’s eyes for the first time this year. Kind of a jam.
James Brown, Miles Davis etc had 2 keep changing band members. U wanna go on your own but once it fails its on Prince. But Prince more than most needed 2 have relationships with people.
Something I've noticed but never commented on. Whoever it was that suggested that plot to "Purple Rain 2: The Further Adventures Of The Time" clearly didn't understand the first movie. He said the Time won a trip to Vegas as second place in the contest. WHAT CONTEST??? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 The prize was to not get kicked out of First Avenue.
I know they’d just retcon the end so they’re an announcement or convo that “the kid won that Warner’s contract and all we got was this Vegas gig”. Then we’re supposed to act like “oh…so it was a battle of the bands”🤔
Morris day. Was so good looking.
Salute 2 Morris
Man thanks a lot, these are great!! Jesse Johnson up here lying like rugs😂
Lol. Which part?

I thank U Brother

Prince had to control his brand because everything at that time that involved Prince was sought after. Think of it likt this, when you think of Janet Jackson Control, you think of Prince’s influence. Hard thing to control.
Prince was so independent. Mayb held grudges, u just never know. We r all human. I feel he was tryna make things right at the end a d wanted his true friends around
Jam n Lewis could have gave those songs to vanity 6
Maurice was Super Jealous of Prince !!!
Trust and believe, The Time were bad-asses, but they just could not hold a candle to the Revolution.
It's criminal how Paul's version of Nothing Compares 2 U, though superior, has been all but cast aside.
Prince’s version is a banger
Superior to what?
@@christophertracy2807 Superior to the other versions.
Prince should be the nicest person? He didn't become rich by a lottery ticket; he worked his ass off like many people; in an industry that has the odds of success like a lotto ticket. Why should he give anything away for free (e.g. recording gear)?
Prince recognized people that didn't need him. Jam and Lewis r 🐐 songwriters u can't hold that down. N his own way he tested their loyalty 2 each other. Morris was afraid 2 step away
I agree with everything you have said except that Morris was afraid to step away. He was not afraid. Leaving was not an option. After the film, he finally did step away, but not without having to pay $300,000.00 to get out from under the contract with Prince. (This is Pepe Willie's story.) That contract was pivotal in seeing the movie to completion as close to the original vision as possible. For that, everyone can be grateful.
Think of the devastating effects that stepping away would have had. Morris was half of the team of Day and Benton, the critical, comedic element of Purple Rain, and carried the comedy of that film. He was the frontman of The Time, which was itself a character in the film. Stepping away would have devastated the film, and both Morris's and Prince's careers. Jimmy and Terry did not want Morris to step away from the opportunity he had been given as a co-star. They were able to step away from The Time because they had something else to step into. But Morris needed to stay to finish collecting what he had worked so hard for.
Morris was a natural talent, but as a co-star in this film, he had never acted previously. His role as the character of Morris Day occupied at least half of this film. Being devastated by the loss of his backing band members, he no longer had the confidence or the desire to continue to play the role that Prince had put him up to. Morris was angry, resentful, retaliatory, under a lot of pressure, in the grip of cocaine addiction, and was self-destructing. It took Alan Leeds and Craig Rice corraling Morris to the movie set on numerous occasions to help ensure the success of the film. I have no doubt that when the film was finally in the can, there was a collective sigh of relief that could have registered on a barometer.
Morris hung on as long as he had to to get the job done. The pressure of playing the character of Morris Day came with a high price of losing his own identity and the resulting addiction in exchange for being himself. Morris was done long before he physically left (after the first and last show of the second iteration of The Time.) There was no fear of leaving. It was just a matter of time.
@@nancypatricia511 Very Well Put. I appreciate You sharing thst Point Of View. I Personally agree. Thank You🙏🏾
What's the interview from 33:21?
So once it goes bad its Prince fault
John Nelson was a horrible father
watched
Jesse Johnson know that he's a damn INSTIGATOR especially how he said that he only seen Prince & morris buck up one time and how he was so happy....
I think the whole band was living vicariously through Morris, he had the relationship close enough to go there. Bean and Jesse were from Illinois and Jimmy and Terry were from South. Morris and Andre were North Minneapolis and knew him longer.
Was that a real fight caught on film or just a deleted scene? I've seen that scene for years but wonder why it was left out of the movie.
Deletes scene. Left out of the movie cuz 5’2 Prince knocking out 6’5 Bean was a bit much.
@@Sinnik22 Right? 😂😂
Jesse said that test audiences cracked up during that scene. Apparently the point in the movie where the fight took place was a dramatic turning point.
