Prince is a contradiction. His 1982 Classic funk jam lays out the dichotomy. "Am I black or white, am I straight or gay...? Controversy". He nailed controversial all day every day. From his risqué concerts to his sartorial choices to the wild lyrics.
Prince took this to serious levels in the studio. Not to say that he was the first, but he did his studio thing with relative frequency and apparent ease. His Jamie Starr alter ego became a Rock Journalist curiosity. The most respected Rolling Stone magazine & Starr tribune reporters were looking around Minneapolis for this elusive producer/svengale/manager. Of course he didn't exist. We now know he was Prince. However Prince employed a Purple House full of talent that he could conveniently draw upon at his whim. Dez Dickerson wrote cool. MORRIS DAY was a credited writer and acknowledged performer on the records he and Prince created. Jesse Johnson killed with his contribution of the skeletal framework for Jungle love. All under the umbrella character of JAMIE STARR & the STARR COMPANY.
However, in 1984 Prince embarked on a risky mission. He was going to become the biggest Rock Star in the world. He wanted it. He talked to his soon to be girlfriend Susannah Melvoin about it. His managers were put on. notice to Marshall their forces. His band was put thru purple paces. His BFF MORRIS DAY was told to be ready. It was all in place. Not even the initial lack of financing from the Warner Bros pictures bosses could halt the coming purple juggernaut. His then girlfriend Denise Matthews (Vanity) derailed the built momentum momentarily but as soon as Apollonia Kotero signed on...the train was back on track.
For the first time Prince would be drawing inspiration not solely from his personal experience, but for a film he did not write. He would be asked to tailor songs to fit montages, leagues and scenes. He once said..."there are songs and there are scenes, I'm the painter, yawls the paintee".
So he recorded an all time classic from a mobile studio truck parked outside a minneapolis rock pub and nailed the performance that would define his entire recording career. He wrote the biggest hit of his life in the midst of a funk renaissance without a baseline. He cut and pasted his way to the guitar heavy rocker, "Let's Go Crazy" from his rehearsal warehouse.
All this got done as he was presiding over the demise of the Time, the breakup of his most notorious relationship, in-fighting in the "harem" and his own feelings of doubt as to whether Purple Rain could take him to his "higher floor."
Later Prince would have his most creative period. Producing at least 7 albums worth of material in the following 2.5 years. He would criss cross the country traveling from LA to MPLS. 1 day in LA he would create one of his biggest hits. It would turn out to be a song that utilized the rising technique of sampling. Prince would soon deride the practice. He actually sued the rap band arrested development for use of a tiny portion of Alphabet St. for the song Tennessee. Years before that he sampled no less than 2 songs for this mammoth pop hit...can you guess which one? Watch the EDIT!!! Видеоклипы

It was always about the music. He couldn't care less about the fame part. After watching this documentary I realized that no one worked harder and took their craft more serious than he did.
Kenneth, agreed, prince was cursed with hearing music in his head, and blessed to share it with us. I wish sometimes he could tune in out for 12 hours and enjoy life and the people around him, just look at how many people were around 10-20 years. He was memorizing I can understand why everyone wanted to please prince, it's so pleasing to see him pleased and happy, smiling etc.
Believe me, he cared very much about the fame
I didn't necessarily mean that he didn't like the fame. Of course he did. I just meant that the music was more important than anything
Raw. This is the raw part and it's still funky.

If Vanity wuz n PURPLE RAIN......
Da movie woulda been a lil bit deeper, just cause she wuz n it!
I blieve she woulda fought, 2 make her character, mo than just a blow-up doll, on da back of Princez motorbike.
I don't think she had pull like dat, on any of her otha moviez. Applez, Mos Def, didn't have da pull ( or possibly, even da nclination. ) wit Prince, 2 pull dat off. Vanity, could have!
Denise Matthews ( Vanity ) wuz da reason, PURPLE RAIN wuz being shot, anyhowz!
Prince had been working hard & he had sum pretty WOmen around, dat he could relax wit.
I think Prince took Vanityz dreamz SERIOUSLY, nstead of just uSINg her, on da casting couch, azz it were.
They made sum vowz, or promisez, 2 each otha.
Vanity would stay clean. None of dat Rick Jamez party scene, here.
Prince would stay faithful.
I blieve Vanity blew off da promise 1st.
2 b rebellious, she took 2 hanging wit da undadawg Morris Day. ( All n da script! ) Prince wuzn't treating Day, nor da Time, rite! He wuzn't payin her rite, 4 Vanity 6, nor dis upcoming movie, either. 2gether, she & Day scored, & bgan 2 party. Prince heard, or found out, & all betz were off. Lil Susan Moonsie, wuz back. ( & I woulda never put her down, n da 1st place! Prince WUZ, trippin! ) Da dance nstructor, helped him 2 blow off steam, azz well!
N Princez dfence, he wuz young & coming from a troubled background, he didn't really know who he could trust. So he just wanted 2 keep it lite, & occasional, wit da ladiez. Vanity had her xcusez. She wanted 1 million, out of da 7 million dollar budget, & her lil Prince, wuz constantly cheating on her, anyhowz.
Barry Gordy & Marty Scorsese, had been ringing her phone wit better, mo cash substantial rolez, anyhowz. So tho PURPLE RAIN, wuz being made, n her honor, she bailed!
Datz my story & I'm stickin 2 it! ( Til sumbody dat can do more than speculate, tellz me othawise. )
23:34 this clip is funny as h3ll! The shade of it all! 🤣
I have to give it to Denise... she wasn't about to let Prince or anyone else put her in a box or determine her worth.

@@Sinnik22 it's TRUE, the main thing you are really helping to illustrate is Prince's drive... we are all going through a lot right now, so the fact you are making these edits highlighting Prince's unceasing motivations has inspired me & motivated me to keep pushing through with life.
Dramatic but I say this sincerely.
Think about it. Prince technically didn't have a string of major hits. A crossover hit in 79 & top ten hits didn't appear till 82 aside from the R&B hits of The Time which he was working to subdue so The Time wouldn't get equal billing as we know.
Nobody I mean nobody goes to the studio with only a hand full of pop hits & demands a motion picture from a major studio against all odds with not even his home company wanting to invest ...& not only pulled it off but he lands the number one movie, soundtrack & single all at the number one spot at once. Aside from the Beatles that is a rare success against all odds. Very inspirational.
Are you on Facebook I think I may already follow you on IG.
@Vincent9 not on Facebook. I hear you. Thank you so much!! We are all going through a lot right now. Its really important. We've been doing it for 2 years approximately. The channel hasn't proven its viability as of now. Not sure if we'll be able to continue much longer on this end.

2. Wanna be your lover
3. Party up
4. Controversy
5. Let’s work
6. Do Me Baby
7. Little Red Corvette
8. 1999

I think some people have the habit of trying to say they wrote some of the songs on this and that record, but i noticed what Prince was alive, they wouldnt breathe a word of this. I take everything they say with a grain of salt. Since Prince died, everyone is jumping on the WROTE THIUS SONG BANDWAGON. if that was true, why didnt their careers blow up without Prince? IJS. Prince never swayed far from his funky roots. From "For You" all the way to "1999" it was there.
It softened some what with "Purple Rain". Resurface a bit on "Around the World in a Day".
But when I heard "Kiss" & "Anotherholeinurhead" featured on "Parade" I was confused. Those 2 songs seemed a departure from the general vibe of the entire album.
But then came "Sign o the Times". The funk was dominant on that album. It made me wonder...
Were those 2 songs on the "Parade" album specifically selected as a harbringer, getting his fans ready for the general vibe of "Sign o the Times"?
I think so !
But the Parade Tour in 1986 was surely the funkiest Prince we had on stage in the 80's. The difference between the LP songs and the live version is huge, like 'Pop Life', 'Life Can Be So Nice' or 'Christopher Tracy's Parade'. Damn, he even sang 'Mutiny' from the short-lived band "The Family" !
We were kinda on the same page as critics. WoW.
@@loulou7194 yes
@@loulou7194 I wouldn't doubt it at all! Maybe I am overthinking it.
Hey, I'm the guy who sat up one evening, turned off the lights, put on my head gear and listened to 1999 & Purple Rain. I concluded that Purple Rain was 1999 Pt 2, (when you completely leave out all the videos from both albums- and strictly judged the material from both albums on the merits of audio alone).
Again- probably overthinking it.
I would have loved to get Prince's take on that theory when I had a conversation with him years later- but I failed to being it up.
He lived music and it resonated with me. I agree with him about people letting people be who they are. The world would be a much better place. 💜💜💜

No other word to describe him other than genius. A word that gets tossed around too freely these days to far too many lackluster performers. That and the word icon

I didn't know he recorded at Electric Lady. 🤔🤔🤔🤔 One of the few major studios in NYC that I never recorded in. I've been there a couple of times
I kinda did but wasn't sure.
I don't remember reading that in any liner notes of any records. I actually haven't heard of any studios in NYC being under his use. Of course that doesn't mean anything. I've worked in most of the major studios in New York over the years. Was always curious whether or not he'd used any out here.

Mark didn't write the melody to Kiss, didn't write the lyrics, didn't write the stripped down minimalist, bass-less arrangement, didn't write the signature guitar or vocal falsetto parts, didn't create the backing vocal arrangement. Mark got paid for his time like anyone else working a day job. David Z got special credit because his contribution had artistic significance to the finished song. Nobody would have listened to the Maz song twice.

What about the opening act 4 Purple Rain? The Glamorous amorous Sheila E.!!!!
Listen to David Rivkin’s truth and then Brown Mark and Wendy’s ‘truth’. I get so mad hearing those insecure degenerates saying that Prince, the genius needed them to make his songs complete. They are sad people.
I'm picking up what you're putting down.
After his death I've seen a few videos with Wendy , Brown Mark and more saying they wrote this verse , that line or the entire sound. It gets more than ridiculous. I wasn't there , like many of us weren't , but I've also like you , have said why didn't _any_ _one_ of them mention this when he was living ? That's what makes it unbelievable to us .
At the end of the day nobody cares about wendy or brownmark, its all about Prince.
QUESTION : MAYBE HE SHOULD HAVE WAITED A WHILE BEFORE RELEASING " AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY".???? CAME OUT TOO QUICK????
I know that I'm probably going to get alot of flack for this comment but I've always thought that he was a much better guitar player than Jimi Hendrix. (In my opinion)
Kenneth Russell, agreed prince was the best guitarists for sure. Jimmy was a good guitar player and what made him famous was playing the star spangled banner at Woodstock, it was good and people took notice. Did you see the time prince made his guitar say "what " 2004 in Kentucky I think, it was on his tour. During "The question of you ". Amazing it was, I don't know why he didn't keep doing it after he found out he could. Always impressive on guitar. I usually say during the concert videos "he's got a get-tar") guitar just kidding, when he picks it up. Thanks for sharing this story, we always appreciate you.
@@saa9099 Woodstock didn't make Jimi Hendrix famous. His performance at the Monterey Pop Festival 2 years earlier is where he arrived as an unknown & walked off stage a star. He had released 3 top selling albums by the time of Woodstock. Prince is a great guitar player but he is not better than Jimi Hendrix. In fact Prince is heavily influenced by Jimi Hendrix (& Carlos Santana).
@ Kenneth Russell
That's your opinion,
but Prince has no footage of him
Showing complete mastery and
magician-ship over the guitar as there is plenty of footage out there wherein Jimi completely captivates you with his skills.
