Prince‘s 1991 album Diamonds and Pearls introduced his band the New Power Generation & is by some counts his second best-selling album period, after Purple Rain. It went double-platinum. It contained his fifth, and final (to date), #1 single. Yet the album does not seem to have stood the test of time with some critics.
NOT AN ALBUM from a cutting-edge upstart but a pop music masterclass offering from an established star. So its version of the “new” might not feel as new, might feel like revisions to past formulas. At the same time, Diamonds and Pearls does have a distinct style and approach within Prince’s catalog, and amidst the music of the day. If Prince was trying to jump on a hip-hop bandwagon, he was intentionally not going for the newest-latest style or the purest form of the genre, but taking a pop/R&B version of it (new jack swing, essentially) and wedding it to a more old-school form of entertainment, with elements of Las Vegas, of James Brown, of Cab Calloway.
Glitter and glamor are the settings, in a mansion and jewelry, old Hollywood way, but the songs also cut against that image, cut against the materialism inherent in it even. It has more swagger than Price had had for a while - it does draw from hip-hop’s swagger, but not exclusively. It’s a strange mix of the elaborate and the down-and-dirty; elegance and grit.
"We slowly watched it come into shape: lyrically and the influence of modern black soul, sort of hip hop," newly installed drummer Michael Bland told Rolling Stone. "He was really trying to still be him and navigate through that whole early-'90s phenomenon."
In keeping, this album hasn't necessarily aged as well as his other best-known records. Diamonds and Pearls can sometimes seem hopelessly trapped in its own era. Still, there's no denying the album's best moments - among them "Cream," his fifth No. 1 single; "Gett Off"; the title track; and "Money Don't Matter 2 Night" - despite the occasionally dated approach.
Prince, of course, quite famously dissed hip hop, only to change his mind. He had already referenced the nascent New Jack Swing movement on Graffiti Bridge's "Round and Round," with Tevin Campbell. But Diamonds and Pearls capitulated entirely, as Prince began to prominently feature rapper Tony Mosley in his latest band, the New Power Generation. Deep cuts like "Jughead" and "Push" were so contemporary as to become instantly fossilized.
He was leaving nothing to chance. Prince became a relentless public presence even before this studio project arrived, playing industry-type gigs, one-off talk shows and - most famously - the MTV Video Music Awards, where he offered "Get Off" while wearing ass-less pants. He even did a video EP, a label-pushed promotional tool that Prince was often reluctant to use.
By some, it was seen as a reactionary move in response to the growing dominance of hip-hop. The man who defensively spoofed rap on The Black Album had now given an MC a prominent place in his new band.
The album sort of began a new era for Prince, leading to him rebuking his name, the symbol era, etc. The whole period is worth rediscovering, as there are gems and intriguing turns throughout, but this album stands as distinct from it, and above it in some ways. It is Prince’s most collaborative-sounding album of the time, but he’s clearly the bandleader. It also has its own style beyond that of Prince the established artist fronting a band. The liner notes call that style “GangsterGlam. Godfather III meets Barbarella.” The idea of the silliest of the Godfather movies meeting a campy sci-fi film is a bit ridiculous. But it suits an album that boasts its own sort of ridiculousness. Remember: this album had a hologram as its cover, a photo of Prince and two women, the non twins named Diamond and Pearl. Видеоклипы
Prince definitely had a type. When he met Vanity and she left he kept trying to find another Vanity yet he never really did.
Great finale to a great season! Your editing is impeccable! ❤️
Sinnik22, you are the best. Sending you love and appreciation for such a wonderful series.
Appreciated fully. Thank You much!
I totally feel lots of gratitude and love for our friend through Prince! Sinnik’s artistry of this amazing series of Prince is absolutely sensational!! We appreciate you Sinnik22!! One Love!! 🙏❤️❤️❤️💜💜💜💜💜🙏🙏
I will always love and miss sweet n badass Prince!! He is sooo missed in this crazy world now 💔💔💜💜💜
The "twins" was a motif he liked to use throughout his career. His zodiacal sign is Gemini "the twins", his mom was a twin, Wendy & Susannah Melvoin were twins and he later had dancers who really were twins.
Very true. Also he told Oprah that he found a female twin of his own lurking in his subconscious when he took himself through hypnotherapy.
@@Sinnik22 His Gemini duality.... 🤔
Greatest series on music, ever!
WoW big praise! Thank You.
This series is just so amazing.
I’ve been waiting for this!!!! The NPG years yes!!!!😊❤
Glad to hear it!!!
Yes!!! This is one of my favorite shows, including TV.
Prince still had some bangers on Diamonds and Pearls. 'Money Don't Matter 2 Night' 'Willing and Able', 'Strollin', and of course 'Insatiable' all come to mind. I even liked 'Get Off' back then
Insatiable? That song is so awful it's hilarious.Strollin is a terrible jazzy throwaway and it's ok saying Money doesn't matter tonight when you're a multi millionaire.Aside from that,I ADORE the Purple Yoda
@@judefeehan9056 different strokes for different folks. I love all of the songs you just dismissed.
Insatiable and Strollin being 2 of my all time favorites.
@@jamesa.4451 That's crazy talk James.confused is my name when it comes to you
@Eros120 you don’t like Getting Off any more? How about Cream?
@@randy5880 Unfortunately whenever I think of Get Off now I only remember that awful Violet The Organ Grinder video and feel a deep sense of shame...of myself as well as for Prince. As far as 'Cream' goes, I absolutely never liked that song and always thought it was cheesy and completely dreadful.
Robin Power is very underrated. She should write a book.
An that ass
❤Prince will never die.....his music will live on forever....he's missed
MAYTE SAID WHEN PRINCE MET HER HE HAD HER HAIR STRAIGTENED..........PUH-LEEZE THAT WOULD PISS ME OFF......TRYNA CHANGE ME WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW ME.........LOVE U PRINCE BUT..NOT!!!!!!!
She's always In my hair ! 😆
You know you would've been all for it like any other fame-and-money-lovin' woman.
@@jovanreid6782 BULLSHIT!!!!!..............I LIKE MYSELF AND HE MUST HAVE LIKED ME THE WAY I WAS TO EVEN HAVE INVITED ME TO MEET WITH HIM!!!!!......I WOULD HAVE HAD NO ISSUES WALKING AWAY........ALL OF US WOMEN NOT CUT FROM THE SAME CLOTH!!!!!!!!..................DON'T FORGET, VANITY LEFT HIM CUZ HE COULDN'T CHANGE HER.....
@Tony NO MAN HAD THAT POWER TO DO THAT TO ME AND HE NEVER MET ME FACE TO FACE......VANITY LEFT HIM CUZ HE COULDN'T CHANGE HER..............I AGREE!!!!........AND MY MOM NEVER WOULD HAVE LET ME GO MEET HIM AT 16 BY MYSELF......
I find it odd. That when Prince started his separation from WB. He voiced the same distaste for the industry that he himself practiced.
This. 100%
That's a Gemini 4 u.
You clocked it
Truth.
Prince was a genius but a mess as well
Never clicked on so fast!💜💜
Oh yea and this series was absolutely genius every bit of it! Prince would be proud to see this I hope. But whoever put this together had to have known the purple one💜 (can't wait to see what he does next)👍🔥
Season 4 is next
@@Sinnik22 U mean there's more? Can I ask how did you collect so much information said by THEM? I've been a die hard fan for life and haven't heard ANY of the content that you have in your masterpiece! 2nd question: Did you ever meet Prince? I'm a celebrity child and Susan Roger's engineered my father's album! (Ted Hawkins).
I guess Shock G and Prince had love for each other. Nice! ❤️
Shock g did a remix on crystal ball
@@CainaanDC Cool! I had no idea! ❤️
His Lovesign remix was an absolute banger. 🔥
I really love what you do!!! these videos are awesome
Love the love. Thanks
Such a fantastic series. Amazing work ❤
Hope you’ve kept up!😉
Prince acted like if you worked for him he owned you Matt had ever right in the world to take on jobs that would pay considering he was no longer on retainer
Isn't that how employer/employee relationships work, that's been my experience. Of course Matt made the right decision, both parties knew the consequences of not being on retainer.
But what happened to Graffiti Bridge “Bang” guy?
YESSSS!!!! So good!!! 💜💜💜
His new band npg brought the best out of prince .... diamonds and pearls is one of his best albums imo.... props on the video always so much detail and amazing editing... this channel is so good 💯😍😍😍
And the comments and community add so much!!!
Great finale. Diamond and Pearls is next I love that album. Prince had way to many yes men at this point

Finally
It’s interesting how he gave other people’s songs to others but was hard on vanity for leaving him 😒 once she got her hit and fame .... I think vanity saw quick and had to escape his control and manipulative ways . Don’t get me wrong .... I love prince’s music but I’m pretty sure he was a handful 😂RIP 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
He had to have control. Can you blame dude?
Agreed
The guy that rapped with the New Power Generation, reminds me of the guy that rapped on Michael Jackson’s Black Or White.
I hate to say it...but, loved the NPG era of Diamonds and Pearls, but I was not 100% in love with Tony as a rapper.
@@kelvendyson1508 ikr. I felt like I was forcing myself to like him because I liked Prince. However, the more I continued to listen to the songs over and over, I eventually didn’t mind it so much. Prince was a big fan of Public Enemy. It’s very hard for anybody to rap like Chuck D.
@@alfreddreamerphotocomics4880 ...exactly. The more I listened I overlooked it because it was Prince. He just didn't have a smooth flow whether soft or hard rapping. IJS!
Call the Law/Johnny/Black MF decent
episode #16 allready ! u split this finale up, didnt u ? think u can quess my next question, is there a Season 4 in the make or r u all done ? (after 3 years of hard work)
btw i did give a short reaction on the edit#9 Rebel edit episode.
3 years ! what a ride. my purple brother i thank U so much 4 All u did ! ! ! 💜🐾
Edpisode 1 of season 4 Is already cooked. 😉 “we ain’t done, we’re not done”
At this point, Prince was following trends instead of creating them! I think that he had a love/hate relationship with hip hop which he attempted to use some elements in his music. But Tony M can't rap....PERIOD!
As for Warners, they wanted to know where their money was going especially with Paisley Park was concerned. It was more a vanity label. If you think about it, name another artist on the label was somewhat successful?
Sheila but her best was pre Paisley. Romance 1600 is awesome though
Doctor Fink flatline 1979-1990 was great
The BEST BAND he collaborated with !!!
Prince had that izm in his bones😎
I don’t wanna say that Prince was grooming Mayte up until she came of age and then he just finally pounced but….😬🤷🏾♂️ I feel like Jill Jones, Eric Leeds, and Alan Leeds are the only ones who aren’t afraid to just say that Prince was an unfair, manipulative, and poor business practicing jackass. I love him 2 the 9’s but…. it is what it is. Y’all see how I referenced a deep cut like “Love 2 The 9’s” in this comment? I still love Prince y’all.😂
I caught that…you’re The 1. 😏
Agreed, the more I learn about him, the more I think of him as a jackazz who expected people around him to give much more than he was willing to give.
@Tony Yeah but they only have a cult following. Only to Prince’s most devoted fans are these people known. They could’ve been so much greater. Prince often sabotaged people’s careers when he was done with them. It’s also known that he was something of a money grubber. In 1998, Tony Mosley and Levi Seacer sued him for unpaid royalties that he owed them for the creative input they had on his albums. They won but they had to split the money and pay legal fees and ended up with peanuts. Now they remember him fondly(which is fine); but Jill Jones and the Leeds brothers and Robin Powers just tell it like it is. He use to be on some bullshit. The Time has never been afraid of expressing this as well.
Facts. But that worked for When Doves Cry. Sometimes genius requires boldness and sometimes boldness is silly. Ye comes to mind
@@randy5880 Where does “When Doves Cry” come in? Plus Kanye isn’t a musical genius imo. Peace and Love 🙏🏾
Carmen is so talented
She had a moment
JJ is always going to be JJ. Love her
Baebollonia II. 💜
4:58 LMAO 🤣🤣🤣😆😆👀
Miko, Levi, Sheila gloria, and others either from Oakland or living there at the time.
Wow. Prince and MJ really missed rap. And kind of have the appreciation and respect for it of a generation too old. Any rapper will do with the hippity hop 😂. These are so amazing. Glad I watched the Robin Powers video first. 🤯
Mj kinda did the rap thing right. He got actual pros to rap on his singles. Biggie, heavy d…
@@Sinnik22 right but who is that on Black or White? MJ did better. Prince eventually linked up with Chuck D. But they were pretty late to the game. It had already charted and I think there was a rap Grammy already. Not cutting edge.
@@randy5880 naw the black or white rapper was a joke.
@@randy5880 however Mj tried to get run DMC on bad.
💟💜💟💜💟💜💟💜💟💜💟
Absolutely LOVE all of your videos, but this one was kind of hard on the eyes. Fonts are hard to read and a lot the footage has a dark effect on it.
It was a choice. Trying to show how he was questioning direction and how uncertain things seemed to be. however, this is great feedback cuz people have to be able to see who is speaking. Thank You.
Prince was definitely grooming Mayte.... just like he had done with Anna Fantastic. That's why I'm concerned if a mainstream documentary is ever made about Prince, the media might do the whole "cancel culture" thing on him because of his Strange Relationships with the ladies. Just the Mayte story alone, from start to finish, is not a good look at all for Prince. I saw a video where Mayte was telling the story from first meeting to the baby and the breakup. She was trying to tell it in a good light but most of the comments were like "This is not a romantic story at all" and "This is so disturbing".
There is a youtube video called “THE UNTOLD TRUTH ABOUT PRINCE & MAYTE GARCIA'S BIZARRE RELATIONSHIP” and the comments are not very satisfying, but you’re right mainstream media and the internet will try to cancel him if this was made public
You are 100 percent correct. I remember when myte first came around and it seemed weird to me that she was so young , then a few years later they got married .
@Tony Yea, Bonnie and Rosie and maybe one or two others. But cat fycked him. She’ll never admit it, but it is what it is.
Also, you’re right women are very manipulative. Once I figured out how they worked I was able to get them very easily! My method: Simple! I found out that as long as you don’t develop feelings for them at least too fast 💨 then they’ll fall hard(er) for you, than vice versa. People at work and every else was asking how I did it. At one point in my life I kinda looked like Prince at least that’s what people told me anyway.😊
But it wasn’t my looks, it was my way of treating them like they were unique, but still not falling and bending over backwards for them and them not being able to control me either.
I found out that the ones you REALLY fall for will 🐶 the 💩 out of you!
“The beautiful ones are hard to find, the beautiful ones hurt you every time”! Who else but Prince, speaking words of wisdom..
This is my worry too. They’re already making RUclips videos about him being a groomer.
It’s hard to dispute it when it’s true. 😂
It was a different time though. The things that got a pass back then seem crazy now.
I hate that his name will be tarnished 😢
He was no R. Kelly but it’s still kinda creepy.
That’s the reason I don’t listen to the song, “The Morning Papers”. It’s creepy and cringey but pretty much accepted at the time.
@@suzeesix - "I Wanna Melt with U" has a bit of that as well. It was actually part of the storyline for that whole 0(+> album. Strangely, all his exes still seem to speak positively about him. I've heard Susannah and Jill Jones get a bit salty in interviews but they've never trashed him... which they would definitely have reason to do.
He had a serious 10 album run, but from Diamonds and Pearls onwards he lost me. There were a few moments in the 90s, but it was never as good.
“D&P” definitely had some winning moments though. The title track, “Cream”, “Gett Off”, “Money Don’t Matter 2Night”, “Insatiable”, “Strollin”. Those were the obvious gems from that album.
What musical artists don’t have a peak period? Prince released more great music in a 10-15 year span than any artist in history (IMO of course)
@@jamesa.4451 Right. I did say 10 album run after all. Not many can claim that.
I'm finding these responses curiously defensive. Most great artists have their time in the sun. For me, the 90s is when that sun began to set on Prince. And that's okay.
I liked the video collections for D&P and Love Symbol
Prince
Dirty Mind
Controversy
1999
Purple Rain
ATWIAD
UTCM
SOTT
Batman Soundtrack
Diamonds and Pearl's
The rest you can have
…and I’ve yet been able to forgive the self-indulgent films “Graffiti Bridge” and “Under the Cherry Moon”.
BRO! I made the mistake of watching the “Graffiti Bridge” film before I heard the whole soundtrack. It ruined the whole music listening experience for me with that album for the longest time. The movie was TERRIBLE!!! I’ve since warmed up to the soundtrack though. Some of the highlights from that album are “The Question Of U” and “Joy In Repetition”.
They npg was far more talented than the revolution
I love Prince but It looks like the person who was the slave to Record Label was trying to become a slave master over these women😮
By the time Graffiti Bridge was out,I lost all interest in Prince’s music. It was like he was trying to fit in with all the crappy music that was going on at the time.
I didn't give up on Prince but I know what you mean. I leaned more towards his heavy rock edge . He was returning. The group ghost Note Was his next band with super Bassist Mono Neon proves he would be able to play something completely different than anything before eventually. I mean I Was waiting for him to realize that he didn't have to go That Hip hop route.
This is interesting I’d like more about this
Go listen to Joy In Repetition and We Can Funk then eat those words
@@youtubestolemyoriginalhandle “The Question Of U” is BRILLIANT!
He had some gems among it, but I know what you mean. Gett Off is the Hip Hop song of his that I love. But a lot it felt forced. I started to distance myself from his music. After New Power Soul in 98, I never paid for another Prince album again. Bought almost everything up until that point
I fell off of Prince around 90. I just wasn't salivating for the new stuff, anymore.
Lots of people fell off around then. Yup.
I never really cared for the whole new power generation, I prefer The Revolution 1000 times over. Just my opinion, the music was just ok.
All opinions accepted & valid 😉
@@Sinnik22 thank you, I know it's not a popular opinion but I'm ok with that lol!
I like Rosie Gaines those dancers tony m can't stand them
I liked Tony, Damon, and Kirk as part of the LIVE act. It forced Prince to step his game up as a dancer. They had too many ⏸ moments in their choreography though😂 They were all in between each other’s legs and Prince had his ass pressed up against their groin and shit😂 I could only tolerate Tony’s live rapping but not on the record. Rosie was AWESOME! If you check out footage from the “D&P” Tour, the opening of the concert features Rosie singing this bomb rendition of “Precious Lord (Take My Hand)”.🔥🔥
