I think the easiest way to describe Aang is his journey is building himself up from nothing to become the hero the world needs. He’s already humanized when the show starts so it’s easier to relate and bond with. Korra is literally the exact opposite, and that’s not bad. She’s already the hero the world needs, and she knows it and like it, but her journey is humanizing herself so she can be a relatable person. I honestly like that dynamic. Not more than Aang’s journey but still.

If Korra had lost the previous Avatar spirits like she did, but somehow was able to get them back at, let's say, mid - end season 3 it would have bothered me a lot less. But as it was, be it just nostalgia, a certain amount of grieving, or just liking the previous Avatars, it just seemed like the show went overboard discarding them completely.

YESSSS 100% agree. For me, Aang was the perfect example for me at age 12. He taught me the importance of patience, empathy, kindness over rage, peace. Honestly the series made me hate war and totalitarianism within all governments, including our own.
Korra was the hero I needed when I was 18 (when it came out) to 22 when the series ended. It taught me what it should be like being a young adult. It taught me about trauma, PTSD, unobtainable goals and views of myself. It showed me that persevering against your mental disabilities didn't mean you were cured, but instead brave. She taught me to be brave as the world attacked me on all sides.
Both Avatars were the Avatars I needed at the time. And I love that their ages matched mine perfectly. I am so grateful for the story of Korra. And of Aang of course. The ugly, the messy, the bad. OG ATLA also had bad episodes. As long as their legacies persevere, I'm okay. May their stories inspire 12 year olds and 21 years olds for generations to come.

i didnt mind the actual plot, but the cutting of the connection got me. why couldnt raava re-establish the connection when she was brought back to life? why cant she use the avatar state, even the first avatar could, if we are going off the idea that it was raava helping him. also, it doesnt really make sense that she wouldnt go into the spirit world even IF the connection was broken- all of the past avatars have their own lives in the spirit world, it might take some work, but they do exist and she could find them and re-establish the connection herself. it just kinda felt like a thing they just randomly threw in tbh. other than that, this show and this book were all amazing! The Raava Korra combined with is a new formation of Raava. She was reborn, along with the way of the world. So Korra is a new cycles Wan, with a stronger spiritual influence as Raava is greater in size than the one that bonded with Wan. Which will likely mean future Avatars contact only those from Korras time(so long as they are apart of her cycle). Meaning the cycle depends entirely on the era in which a given Avatar connects with past lives. Since only those from their era can understand the struggles that are current/up to date.

To show that this show won't backtrack. A lot of people complained about how S01 ended so conveniently(without considering that this was supposed to be a miniseries), so they put some actual lasting consequences in this one. I love how they stuck with this decision. It really raised the bar in a way ATLA never did. One thing about ATLA is that there was always a certainly that one way or the other, the hero would walk out of the situation unscathed/ if scathed, it would be solved easily. This show really created a certain level of uncertainty with that decision. I didn't expect it and so for the most part of S03 and S04, I was on the edge of my seat.
Plus, it really has great thematic value. It was a different age and era. What's the use of looking to a 1000 year old Avatar for guidance in a modern world? This was even explored in ATLA, where at the end of the day, Aang had to make his own choice on killing the Firelord, rather than follow Roku's advice. Plus of you think about it, Roku was only helpful in giving advice to Aang that didn't have to do with the morality of the Avatar's actions. I mean, it was just, "go to my temple for insight on the war, go to Ko to learn about Twi and La, let me explain to you the Avatar State and let me show you how the war began and in some cases, encouraging him not to give up". He never TRULY influenced Aang morally.

The reason I hated it was because it had SOOO much potential, they had so many good ideas, but they didn’t deliver. Like if the villain was an actual character who helped Korra through her spiritual avatar journey, and made the conflict purely societal it would be so much better. That way it ends up going better with season 4 where she feels like she failed everyone as an Avatar. There’s much more to be said, like with the spiritual world building and how Team Avatar had no moments together, but it isn’t nearly as important.

Season 2 was great, we got a deep look how the avatar was created, showing the lion turtles, even showing how earth kingdom, fire nation, air nation and water Tribe were created, side note I think the swamp benders were from avatar wan time, I would think the water benders moved to south and north poles while some stayed in their original land, learning about spirits how the physical and spiritual world are created. its just watching all the avatars die really puts a sour note on season 2 especially when the next season we see the revival of air benders, where I really felt aang could of connected with korra so he too could see the revival of his nation.

I don’t think it was great. The Beginnings episodes were great, and the spirits acting up was interesting. After the Beginnings episodes though, it went downhill when they turned Unalaq into a moustache-twirling villain, who’s motivation makes absolutely no sense. It became a generic story.

It is also about how people can be capable of great good and great evil. It was not at all generic. You are just saying that to make me look foolish. On the other hand, Season 2 of Korra was about stopping some guy who thought that the whole universe should be in darkness. So unless he was mind-controlled by Vaatu before getting possessed by him, I don't see how he could just become so infatuated with him. @@captainhowlerwilson508 No. The main plot of ATLA was Aang mastering all 4 elements and defeating the evil Fire Lord. But I know it was much more than that. Similarly, season 2 was much more than saving the world from 10,000 years of darkness. Korra had her spiritual growth and defeated Vaatu spirotually. Korra defeated Vaatu, not as Avatar but as Korra. This was important because Korra's whole identity was just being the Avatar and not being Korra. Korra defeated Unalaq & Vaatu using Unalaq's own spirit bending technique.

All you are doing is making half-assed arguments to excuse the bad things of this season. They had Unalaq, do one evil thing after the next just to dash to the finish line. He was established as a sort of sympathetic character, who then suddenly becomes infatuated with the darkness for some reason. Ozai was basically an evil man whose evil deeds are passed down from his forefathers, and someone with a jealousy complex. I love book 2 and I have a fanfiction on Wattpad (The Legend of Jasmine) about the earth Avatar being a non-bender for the first 16 years of her life because of an attempt by Avatar Korra to unlock the past lives by releasing her spirit and dying at a very young age. There is a lot of Emphasis on how much the events of book 2 shaped Korra and her view on being the Avatar. There's a part where Asami is talking to Jasmine discussing how much of Korra regretted staking her identity on being the Avatar for so much of her life. Jasmine counters with "She WAS the Avatar" and Asami's response is "That was her job- not who she was as an individual"
I also play around with Vattu (whose presence in Ravaa was the real reason the past lives were inaccessible) not necessarily being the pure evil incarnate he was depicted as in book 2 but rather 1 half of true balance in the world.

No, it's just bad. The arc is not interesting enough. Dark spirit this , dark spirit that. Full grown Avatar being used by the villain easily. Creating her own enemy, loosing a bunch of power by making horrible mistakes due to lack of knowledge, and in the end, making the same mistake again by leaving the spirit portal open.
People having difficulties by their own shortcoming is nothing admirable or interesting, it's just incompetency. people having difficulties due to hardship in life which they have no control over is much more interesting.
It's one thing where you nerf down all of the characters in order to create conflict, it's another when the characters are good and noble but are faced with interesting and hard to resolve dilemma.
For example, Aang, he was made to be a bad parent. Why is that? Because he's a bad person now? Where's the dire situation where he has no choice but to become a bad parent is? Where's the sacrifice decision? Someone is just automatically bad without any reason is not interesting, it's bad writing. Does he feel sorry for his negligence? What's the reaction? Did his kids never express this to him? If they expressed it, would he have just ignored them?
And yes, Aang would've not neglect his 2 other children for their entire life just to groom Tenzin into an heir for his culture. Favoring Tenzin, yes, ignoring the other 2 without showing them love, no.
You see, what they wrote can be good, if what they wrote has a story behind it. They're just like, oh, now Aang's a bad parent because we need an arc revolving around his children warming up to each other.
Nobody is inherently bad, behind a good villain is a hero in their own story. So if Aang is made to be this negligent father, where's the reason for it?
That's why Book 2 is bad, not because of what was written, it's that what was written has no interesting story behind it.

I do agree with Tom that season 2 is definitely a development for Korra because she thinks she has everything under control, and it's like most adolescent year when you think you can handle the world (in my case; I felt like that a lot) when you really don't know what you're doing even now. I hated it because it hit too close to home and I hated my past self and I hated that Korra was thinking things through properly. How would Korra know what to do when she's been told different stories from people she trusted? The communication lacked and there were manipulations. The love triangle was unnecessary at best. imo.

I saw somewhere that the main reason people hate Korra is that it's not because it's a bad show by any means, but because Korra embodies character traits we HATE to have. While with ATLA, you couldn't relate to most of the main characters, with Korra, you UNNERVINGLY did, and this is at its peak when portraying her depression and anxiety in Book 4. ATLA had an escapism aspect to it but with Korra, things hit close to home, take for instance the police brutality and curfew in Republic City...

I honestly understand and agree with a lot of what was said. What I do disagree is Mako's situation; when watching season 2 I honestly agreed with Mako. Korra was taking a more hot headed approach. With ditching Tenzin, and actively trying to pick a her father's side, when it clearly wasn't the right way to do things. She shouldn't have taken sides. but I do agree and understand the kind of pressure she was going through. The relationships (aside from Bolin and Opal imo) were not good at all. The first season I could let it slide as it was hard to fit so much in the episodes they had, but it was just dumb to have it all quickly fall apart in season 2.
The loss of the past Avatars was also just stupid. It made sense, as Unalaq effectively killed Raava, but there had to have been some way to reconnect with Korra's past lives. There was a lot of potential having Korra be able to communicate and speak to other avatars to seek help on how to deal with threats. like Zaheer, Kuvira, and even Unalaq.

    • @henrywayne5724
      @henrywayne5724 4 года назад

That's the thing. I highly doubt the past lives would've offered much guidance. Korra was living at the peak of the Industrial Age and even Aang didn't need the past lives when dealing with The Fire Lord. What's the point of asking a caveman how to build an airplane?
And also, while Korra's decisions weren't the best, I understand where she was coming from. She WANTS to be the Avatar, for the first time in her life, she is all in, both physical and spiritual. A threat comes up and she requires the spiritual, and the ones who kept her LOCKED UP all in the name of her protection can't even help her. Then comes a smooth talking family member who has the solutions to ALL her problems and is actually loved by his people a lot. Would you, honestly speaking, have stuck with Tenzin and Tonraq if you were in Korra's shoes, especially with the spiritual chaos getting worse and worse? Her decision is only made worse by the fact that she is brash and temperamental, but at the end of the day, I would've made the same decision. Her finding out that she doesn't know much at all was really satisfying, when she apologized to Tenzin especially, and that Unalaq had been manipulating her all along.

I just going to say this before I have watched the video, and will post a reply in response to the video after. Legend of Korra season two suffered heavily from so many different things. It had a new animation studio, that normally makes anime, that wasn't prepared for the extreme demands of the show, which caused animation to suffer. It was put online only so that greatly limited its reach and I presume resources to use in the show. However, the thing that I think really kills season 2 is that it was really disappointing, with enough bad to outweigh its good parts. Now, I could talk about how Unalaq was just a bad villain, but I think the greater betrayal was the story. Its starts off so good to, with it setting up so many great ideas and questions for Korra. With the Water tribe civil war, Korra was conflicted, she was trying to stay neutral because she thought that was the best choice for her as the Avatar, but she was also a southern water tribe member. She was looking for a way to do solve these conflicts without picking a side, but she couldn't. To paraphrase Korra's mother, those conflicts between the North and the South existed long before she was born so maybe there was nothing she could or should do. It was really cool seeing her question what her role as the Avatar is, which is a common theme most notably shared through Tenzin. Tenzin is also struggles with his role, feeling that he is failing as a spiritual guide because he can't get to the spirit world, with Korra even dismissing him because of this. This honestly sets up what, to me at least, is the most interesting character arc in the show (besides maybe Korra in season 3-4). This honestly where my praise of this season ends, and I can honestly point to two decisions made in the show, the creation of Raava and Vaatu, and the destruction of the past Avatars. This to me destroys a couple core concepts to the Avatar world and what the Avatar is. Now, the destruction of the past Avatars I think was just a really bad story decision that cuts off so many possibilities, not adding anything to the story, just taking it away. The real crime is with the spirits. By making Raava all good and Vaatu all bad, they take away the blue and orange morality of the spirits. Now, I'm sure some would say, "But they aren't just good and evil, they are like Yin and Yang", to which I say, yes the show did say that, but they didn't show that. Now, I just realized that I am repeating a lot of stuff from Hello Future Me's Legend of Korra's 'Beginnings' | An Overdue Critique, so if you want to know basically what I was going to say, just watch that. In total, season 2 was just really disappointing, with little payoff for the themes it was trying to explore, weakening the shows world, and making decisions that felt almost like a betrayal. While season 2 is bad even when viewed isolated from the rest of Avatar, it was made worse because we had higher expectations for Avatar and season 2 was just so much worse than any other season.

Part of why people think it's so bad is because it isnt different though. It's very typical of the average story beats of most shows out there, which to people who are older and have more exposure to media, makes it bland and predictable at best. People liked Avatar because it was different, so being different from avatar just makes you like everything else.

@Selim Mašić Lol, not at all.
Show A and Show B can both deviate from the common tropes of the time and still be completely different from each other. Like how Strawberry and Chocolate ice cream are both very different from Vanilla, but also different from each other. That's not what happened though.
Not trying to say whether or not your thoughts on Kora being good/bad are right/wrong, just that while it may be different from Avatar, it's a very typical and predictable show for our time. It follows a lot of tropes and clichés that are common in modern media, so when you say "it's just different," you're not wrong that it's different from Avatar, it definitely is, but you're not right in saying that it's different from the average show. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, Marvel made bank off of these kinds of tropes and people loved those movies, but it is why a lot of people were disappointed by Kora.

Also the avatar past lives got severed and that was a major thing that made me not like the season that much. Season 1, 3 and 4 all had one thing that they stuck to. And season 2 didn’t really have that to me. It was good for what it was and honestly the dark avatar is a fucking awesome concept, but it was done horribly. Overall season 2 of korra wasn’t that bad at all, Wans story actually saved the season for me. But comparing it to season 1, 3 and 4, it was by far the worse season. I actually think it’s the worse season out of both ATLA and TLOK. But I don’t think it’s a horrible season. It’s enjoyable, just not on the level of the other seasons of both shows

season 2 could have been good if they just would have stick with Water Tribe Civil War but instead they went to drawn out the spirts witch just ruin the season as a whole.

If it weren't for the character development, I would say most of korra could be written off. The story felt predictable and child korra in book four was my second least favorite part of korra next to Kaiju battle of book two, followed by amnesia love triangle in third.

First of all, I love this video it was well thought out and interesting. I think we can all agree book 2 was the least favourite but honestly LOK in general isn't as bad as people say it was. I just have a problem with some of the storylines in book 2, like how they made her loose her connection to her past lives(making her look weak 😧) as result Zaheer and Kuvira had the guts to still challenge her in the Avatar state like wth who born you 😂. And just how book 2 wasn't really thought out as much.

Her connection to past lives severed because Raava got destroyed. When Raava and Korra fused again, a new Avatar cycle began.

@@varunbhat2077 Yh, I get that but why though. Why did they have to make her loose the connection to her past lives, I don't get it.

@@dumebi_ne The same reason why they had to make all the Airbenders dead in ATLA. It served a purpose in the story. If you see season 3 and 4, this allowed Korra to grow. Plus, it served as a long-lasting consequence of Unalaq/Vaatu's actions.

Killed aang and paste avatars can't make me love a character like that and kill them was totally hoping for this avatar come back it never came and it left me kinda sad that aang wouldn't exist in future stories. Not that I disliked the spirit plot just that was unnecessary could have totally had aang and past lives around.

I think you made some solid points but I think that aang wouldn’t have fallen into favoritism and even if he did there is absolutely no way that Katara would’ve let aang do that. I think they also made a massive mistake that they in showing how the avatar came to be. I’d rate korra book 2 a 4/10. I enjoyed this video, I really like hear what you thought about book 2

Honestly book 2 is my favorite season I like the raava and vaatu lore and the last 3 episodes has my favorite fight scenes and unnalaq wasn't that bad even though he's just a waterbending ozai
Honestly the only thing I don't like about season 2 is the love triangle and losing past lives it was a powerful moment but I wished they reversed it by the end.
Also I love the kaiju battle best fight
