Heresies Ep. 8: The War on Our History -- A Cultural Revolution

  • History is a major battleground in the culture wars. Our past is being weaponised in the most cynical of ways. Heroes like Winston Churchill have been marginalised and recast as pantomime villains. Education, the media, the arts, indeed all our institutions, routinely judge our country by its very worst historical moments. Meanwhile, all that is great and good is either glossed over or expunged completely. Put simply, the revolutionary impulse to destroy has all but conquered the instinct to conserve.
What can we do to reverse this situation? In "The War on Our History", episode 8 of our acclaimed documentary series #NCFHeresies, Dr. Philip Kiszely, a lecturer in cultural history at the University of Leeds, seeks to explain what is going on -- and why.
Dr. Kiszely, charts the intellectual course of events that led to the institutional capture we call "The Long March"; from Kierkegaard and Antonio Gramsci to the rise of post-modernism under Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida's deconstructionists. Features interviews with Prof. Frank Furedi, Calvin Robinson and Inaya Folarin Iman

Superb programme. Intelligent, clearly-argued and interestingly presented. Good contributions from Calvin Robinson et al. It's an appalling thought that it is inconceivable that our national broadcaster would give it air time. This illustrates the huge gulf between our institutions and the general population. Thanks to You Tube we're not condemned to having our intelligence insulted by such institutions. Thank you Mr. Kiszely.

English conservatism is about preserving, or conserving, the ‘English Classical Liberal Tradition’. Individualism, free speech, voluntary association, property rights, consent of the governed etc. Conservatives in England are Liberal in a Protestant Christian framework of family, the golden rule and loving thy neighbour (or at least not hating them as that makes you the thing you hate. Have compassion and try to help them become better people, less tribal, more accepting of the community that they live in) amongst a lot of other things, a hierarchy of values, so to speak.

To discuss issues of inequality, injustice, exploitation and dehumanisation in Manchester without discussing the hideous treatment of the white working classes there, is a surprising achievement. The mill, mine, and factory workers of the 19th century, and even those of the 20th century who came back from two world wars to face homelessness, criminally low wages, useless schools for their children, and, until 1948 and the NHS, total lack of adequate health care, would have considered the welfare payments and services offered freely to immigrants today to have been luxury. 10mins in and it's missing the most crucial factor in the emergence of "wokeness", being the moral-psychological paradigm. The shift from a traditional religious regime, to a secular egalitarian regime where minorities are sacralised, in which the internet has accelerated and radicalised it's excesses. One of the characterising pathologies or complexes of the modern west, is the radical phobia of bigotry and racism (to black people) being that most powerful. This charged complex is always in the psychological background of our everyday life and culture. The result is that in culture, when England (or the west) is presented, it is trivialised, deconstructed, mocked. The very fact that the modern world happened to emerge in the west is becoming a racist conspiracy theory. The very fact that being a minority, presupposes that in many ways being alienated is an unavoidable fact, is replaced with the idea that simply being unusual, is being a victim of a supremacist system of privilege vs oppression. Last of all, the west being that place where egalitarian discourses were born, has been replaced with the idea that the west created bigotry.

I do understand where Phil's remark about keyboard warriors comes from. It can be extremely mentally tiring to try and help an indoctrinated radical wokiest to see any sense of reality, in fact it is often impossible. I still do try though, but they inevitably resort to name calling as they can not formulate a reasonable argument (hence me choosing this current name as I thought it may have to make them think a little harder before they spurt out nazi, islam or trans phobe, but it doesn't).
An example of what I have come up against in the last couple of days has made me doubt their sanity! I have found myself having to defend the rights of children not to be r4ped by the "progressive MAP community" aka Minor Attracted Persons. These vile people advocate the removal of the age of consent because the find it "oppressive", if you haven't heard of this term put it in the search bar as there are videos here about them, their end goal is to legalise peadophilia. Then I had an exchange with someone who thought that uncontrolled illegal immigration across the channel should be made legal because these people "are just wanting to better their lives"...but they couldn't comprehend that our infrastructure, culture and quality of life could be negatively impacted even the slightest...not even the environmental destruction of the countryside being concreted over at an alarming rate could give them a change of thought. I won't give up, I will continue to challenge the cult of wokery...but at the end of the day big tech holds all the cards...I have been terminated from youtube several times for "hate speech" or more accurately "wrong think" for simply questioning radical opinions.

Nick ... excellent points. Slavery ... actual physical purchase and total control of human beings ... still exists in the world today but nary a peep is heard about it. And sexual slavery and trafficking of humans is, unfortunately, alive and well yet knowledge of it or discussion of it is actively suppressed.
It is only one racial group being vilified while other racial groups are not actively condemned for the very same offences.
That informs me. It helps me understand that the 'principles' and 'values' being trumpeted by the wokerati are merely Psy Op strategies and tactics in a very different and cloaked and subversive attack on traditional Christian culture, and, indeed, the Word of God, upon which the West was born.
Someone else made the point in these comments that many atheists, while denying a specific sovereign deity to one degree or another, still hold to basically Christian culture as preferable to other 'choices' of culture largely because that is the culture, thoughts, principles, values, etc. they grew up in and have decided it seems right and good to them. So, even if one denies or rejects the founder, it still seems best that, basically, the Ten Commandments might be the way to go.
I think developments in the next few decades will bear this out and that this is the real reason why traditional conservative minorities in America are scorned.
'Thou shalt not steal' has been rejected by the woke in favor of 'hey, you are oppressed, so go loot and steal because you deserve it.'
Besides the advantage of hastening the destruction of current civilization, the woke nihilists champion the cunning criminal mind. As in the days of Pontius Pilate, they say, 'Give us Barrabas!'

A direct result of this is the attempts of new groups to try to rewrite the history of the indigenous population. As they sense themselves to be more and more in the ascendency they also want to control the narrative - because it reinforces that ascendency.

The left in Britain effectively dissolved in the 1960s as it pursued neo-Marxist identitarian policies under the banner of the New Left. It followed this path because it couldn't resolve the heinous nature of the Soviet regime nor how to organise wages fairly. So it gave up. Just ask yourself, if the left are winning, why is the divide between rich and poor greater than it has ever been? It was Britain that went to war against slavery in 1808 that had the greatest effect on slavery. Prior to that all people were openly sold as slaves, not particularly black people. Africa was responsible for the most slavery of the time but they were just as happy to sell a slave of any colour. The ships were just ships not slave ships. The ships arrived in Dakar with wine etc. from Europe and Africa's main export was slaves so that was what was bought. This was simply trade and not racism. The ships did not want to cross the Atlantic empty as that is very dangerous. When Britain decided that this was wrong, they decided that the slave trade was wrong, nothing to do with the colour of the people. Britain is now criticised for destroying Benin but the King of Benin was a great power in the slave trade and faught to keep the slave trade alive as he was making millions from it. British history involves the ending of slavery whereas every country on this planet has slavery in its history.

I was disappointed with this. We all know what "the long march through the institutions" is about, but the video content was like a pond-skater insect - skimming over the surface from one place to next without presenting a clear logical thread. Calvin Robinson was easily the best and most erudite contributor. Furedi, unsurprisingly, gave a totally post-Marxist instrumental view of what the study of history 'is for'. The point that the woke are trying to either erase or rewite history isn't in dispute, nor is it a new phenomenon - this is what historiography is about. The "victor" or dominant elite in society get to write (or re-write) history, in order to prop up, maintain and extend their world-view. The issue is how does larger society reverse this growing takeover, or are we as helpless as those agrarian peasants when the elitist, middle-class Bolsheviks took power in Russia? Nor was there any context given that this wokeism is a global phenomenon, sourced from the insanity inside American universities and promoted by supra-national interests. The thing about war is that there are casualties but Dr. Kiszely didn't mention this - the people losing their jobs, the new cliques being created because no-one gets a job unless they conform to the new political orthodoxy, the fear culture and its effect on freedom of expression and social harmony. And the ending seemed to offer rather trite 'solutions' - engage in Burke's localism, church & family - and read history: all which I found rather patronising - and woefully inadequate in the face of the existential threat to our western liberal democracy.

Students, then, as many now, are interested not in the objects of their crusades but in power. Crudlely, boss instinct ran riot... but it was nicely justified bu expiation of assumed guilt. If we persist in judging history by today's 'values'- what shall become of it when change inevitably alters them? This is the arrogance of iconoclasts and those attempting to colonize history, even as they claim to be doing exactly the opposite. Such ideologues are not interested in humanity but in feeling good and condemning all who disagree in the slightest. It makes them feel good and special.
Intolerant and arrogant academics created a generation of students who follow the example set by many of their teachers.

Every one of those "protestors throwing the statue unto the river should have been thrown in after it. Let the punishment fit the crime.

It seems to me the discussion regarding history occurs against a backdrop of assumed multiculturalism (all cultural behaviours have equal merit) - rather than cultural pluralism. Hence a decolonising, cynical, ethic can occur in which dominant Western narratives are relegated in prominence and marginalised narratives promoted and placed alongside the Western narratives so as to achieve an ontological and epistemic equality - that is, all have equal ontological and epistemic merit.
I think this ethic can be found in postcolonial theory's decolonisation program.
So decolonisation can weaponise the past by using restropective bigotteering/moral presentism - analysing the past using today's ethical norms from postcolonial 'theory' and hence attribute a negative moral valence to aspects of the past.
I found Frank Furedi's comments excellent in this regard.
