    Great video and perfect timing for me. I was just comparing those exact lenses. I do already own the 55mm and was toying the idea of selling it for the Sony 85mm. But I may just keep it for now and use it in Super 35 mode when needed. I like your camera bag. Who makes it and what model is it? Many thanks!

    • @OneRiley
      @OneRiley  3 года назад +1

      Thank you bro. I really wanted to keep both, but since I always do indoor events, 85mm seems too limiting for me. The brand for camera bag is Pacsafe, I’m using the LX8 model it’s very durable and has an anti-theft feature, you can find many of their other anti-theft bags on their website. All the best man.

      @@OneRiley Cool. I was also debating selling the 55mm for the Sony 50mm f1.2. But the size and weight…🤔

    • @OneRiley
      @OneRiley  3 года назад +2

      Yup Alfred, 50mm 1.2 seems to be the best fifty-ish lens out there right now, but its size and weight is a “NO” for me. I’d rather invest to the 135 GM and keep this classical 55mil.

  • @Krinyo666

    Saying that 55mm is better choice because using 35mm crop one gets ~85mm is insane. It is only a crop, but the DOF won't be the same what you get using the 85mm. Using 35mm crop bokeh doesn't change.

    Great review. Just got my camera and 35mm f1.4 lens few days ago. I am torn between 55mm & 85mm as alternative portrait/travel lens, because of size and field of view. With this video, I finally decided to get 85mm.

    I considered both these lenses but in the end went with the flexibility of of the excellent Sony 24-105 G zoom. My other lens are the 20 1.8 G and 100-400 GM. Those 3 lenses nicely cover all my photography which ranges from product, to travel to wildlife

    I have both lens. The 55mm was my most recent purchase at $634 (Renewed) on Amazon. It looked 100% brand new in every aspect. Both are a part of my everyday travel. The third lens is the Sony FE 20mm f/1.8. Left at home for other purposes is the Sony FE 35mm 1.8, the Sigma 24-70mm Art, and the Sigma 105mm 1.4 Art which is too big for travel. They are all great lens, but the three mentioned are my favorite lens. Can't go wrong with either the 55mm or the 85mm. I would use the 55 for street photography and the 85mm for more portraiture head and shoulders.

    • @OneRiley

      That’s good to know Jay. What a good collection of lens you got there. You’re right in every way. I’d recently added a Tamron 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 for travel. I only have 1 prime now (55 1.8) along with the Tamron glasses 17-28 f/2.8 and 28-75 f/2.8 G2. I’m saving for the 135 GM this year and might also add a used 100-400. Thank you for spending your time watching this video.

    Bro! You make a very good video. Clean, informative, always moving, some really nice elements. I am going to subscribe.
    I stumbled upon one of your videos which was tips for Astro photography. It was a great vid, I am new to the astrophotography and it helped that you also use the Sony A7iii. I also have the 55 & 85 in this review, I love both lenses. I have the Tamron 17-28 & 28-75. I will look at getting a zoom up to 200, I believe Tamron have a few offerings. Might look at the tracker you have. Anyway thanks for sharing, really like your videos. Great work, hope your enjoying NZ. Home

    Hi, I have a Sony a6500 and I only own a 24-105mm F4. I'm interested in documentary filmmaking so I want to buy a good lens for indoor interviews with chances of making nice bokehs. That's the main focus, although it'd be nice if the lens is versatile enough to be used for shots of the stars at night (a documentary I want to make is about astronomers). Given that it is a APS-C sensor, should I go for the 55 or the 85? Thank you, I'd really appreciate your help.

    • @OneRiley
      @OneRiley  2 года назад

      Hi @Stefania, that question is a bit tricky on an aps-c body. I know that the a6xxx cameras are so good, but I’ll probably steer you towards getting a 35mm prime f/1.4, unless you can freely move backwards, hence; neither the 55 or 85 is good (with 85=more rounded and pleasing bokeh). I normally shoot indoor events as well, and although i carry the zeiss 55, i also bring along an ultra-wide lens (Tamron 17-28). All the best, thank you for spending your time watching this video.

    Which lens is better for portrait photography and why? Sony FE 85mm F/1.8. sony 90mm macro .85mm sigma art.

    • @OneRiley
      @OneRiley  9 месяцев назад

      Hi Mary, you’ll be fine with either of the 85mil. 90 isn’t as fast as those two as it’s a more specialized lens. I like the tight portraits of an 85 mil prime, but that also depends if you like that kind of style, some people prefer environmental portraits and others just the subject. All the best =)

    great review - i really like your last comment re lets learn from each other and i have learnt from your video too
    i have a sony a7c - 16-35 F4 and 28-60 kit lens - i prefer zooms however nothing beats 85mm 1.8 - the 55mm clearly is no slouch either --i have been using the kit lens in super 35 mode and 10 megapixel is quite enough for my type of photography - with crop i get a 90mm at the long end-
    but clearly comes down to what one needs - (might get 85 one day)

    What nonsense, talking about the manufacturing date is just idiotic and shows that there is no professionalism in this video. Zeiss (Jena) makes lenses since 150 years and the famous Zeiss Tessar type lens came out in the early 1902. Yes, lenses have improved over the years as to coating but the physics are still the same. Nowadays there is not much to be improved with the exception of some little manufacturing changes. The greatest changes are advertising and other nonsense and stupid people believing in things they get dished up by clever marketing. I use Zeiss lenses including my eye glasses but I also use Sony Zeiss products such as the 85mm f1.8 and it is an excellent lens I can highly recommend especially with the Sony A7R4 full frame camera, I use.
