    From the way this was originally so horribly censored and mangled by the network (which the brothers had demonstrated some of the CBS network edits for when it later aired on E) to this beautiful full performance which was never originally aired in its entirety… let me just say this is really a beautiful thing to watch! Thank you so much for making it available to anyone and everyone on RUclips!! it’s a beautiful restoration!! Thank you Joan, Tommy and Dickie for everything!! ❤️❤️❤️

    The couple I babysat for in the early 60’s had many of her albums and I listened to them, along with PP&M and a few others. I fell in love with Joan Baez’s music at about age 14! I’m now 73 and this is a true gift 💝! (I’m still friends with the people I babysat for way back then!)

    Love this Smothers Brothers video, remember seeing it back in '69. I just wrote a reflection poem about Joan Baez a week or two ago. I'm 75 years old and a lifelong poetry writer of thousands. I've recently started a series on people I respect and love from my teenage, 20s, and younger years. Joan Baez was one of the very first.

    The final song, I Shall Be Released, was beautifully done. It was enhanced with the Smothers Brothers singing on the chorus. I imagine many people in the audience weren't familiar with I Shall Be Released since Dylan himself hadn't issued a version of it yet. And, I believe, the only released version at the time of this broadcast was on The Band's Big Pink album.

      I believe that is one of her Martin 0-45 guitars. Small body (size 0), slot headstock, 12 frets to the body, the style 45 is their most highly decorated model, with abalone inlays, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, an ebony or rosewood board and a spruce top; it is an iconic Martin design that harkens back to the late 1800s. They are commonly referred to today as "Parlor guitars".

  • @bxdanny
    @bxdanny 17 дней назад +2

    A beautiful performance. But her haircut, and her outfit, look oddly masculine. I don't think I've seen her with that look before. Anyway, this was five months before her appearance at Woodstock, in March of 1969 (not 1968). David was sent to prison in July. He was certainly never facing any possibility of being executed, so playing "The Green, Green Grass of Home" for him was a bit over the top. But "I Shall Be Released", a song about prison, seems perfectly appropriate.
    BTW, for those who don't know, "The Smothers Comedy Brothers Hour" is a name that was mainly used for a show that was a summer replacement (in 1968) for "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour". It was hosted by Glen Campbell. So I'm a bit surprised to hear it used here for the actual Smothers Brothers show. I'm also wondering if Baez did appear again later in the program and perform any additional songs.

    If you want to see her sing about social injustice at the upcoming tribute to her in San Francisco, it'll cost you $658. smh (edit: Hold on - I've got to check myself. This is a charity event for Sweet Relief. If you can afford it, please go)

    I think the story is that this episode got The Smothers Brothers Show canceled, because they allowed Joan Baez to speak about her husband's anti-war activism.

      No, not really. But it added fuel to the fire when CBS creatively censored her speech. Just another thing CBS did to fuck with the Brothers.

      Yes, I was quite amazed that she was allowed to speak about him and his anti-war principles on mainstream tv in this way. Not surprised to hear it was cut!

    Coming from that same generation, and having served in the military, I’m a bit conflicted with Joan and her philosophy. While I think she was a standout performer, and till do, I cant ignore her disdain for America and the VN war veterans. Her “California hippy” husband is a coward who didn’t deserve my service.

      Interesting. Dickie also served in the military. He's still sympathetic to her husband's cause as you can see here.
      But then again Dickie's father died at the hands of the Japanese after 4 years in inhumane conditions as a POW. Context.
