The conviction, honesty, bravery and intelligence of Joan Baez and The Smothers Brothers renders my insomnia a small price to pay. Thanks for posting this.
The couple I babysat for in the early 60’s had many of her albums and I listened to them, along with PP&M and a few others. I fell in love with Joan Baez’s music at about age 14! I’m now 73 and this is a true gift 💝! (I’m still friends with the people I babysat for way back then!)
11:02 fabulous Joan inspired me to start playing the guitar and singing. Also aged 14! Now 72 and still playing, singing Plaisire D'amour at cousins birthday party last week. Nowhere near as well as Joan though. Still trying 😊
My son told me last week when he was young he played one of my albums of Joan and thought she sang like an Angel. He has a great appreciation of her wonderful ballads!
Love this Smothers Brothers video, remember seeing it back in '69. I just wrote a reflection poem about Joan Baez a week or two ago. I'm 75 years old and a lifelong poetry writer of thousands. I've recently started a series on people I respect and love from my teenage, 20s, and younger years. Joan Baez was one of the very first.
all things change. and despite the not looking so good these days, all things change....AND pendulums swing! Her song also speaks to loss and grief and melancholy, while embracing the whole dang pathos in life!
I first heard Joan sing back in the early sixties. I have loved her singing ever since. Not only is her singing great but also is the values for which she stands.
The final song, I Shall Be Released, was beautifully done. It was enhanced with the Smothers Brothers singing on the chorus. I imagine many people in the audience weren't familiar with I Shall Be Released since Dylan himself hadn't issued a version of it yet. And, I believe, the only released version at the time of this broadcast was on The Band's Big Pink album.
Incredible crystal clear timeless message through music! Thank you for providing such a wonderful rendition of such a time, with beautiful Joan Baez and the Smothers Brothers!

First time hearing these songs by Joan Baez; she's very good. Also, the Smothers Brothers known for being very funny were also talented musicians and singers as well.
Always great to hear Ms. Baez. Such a great singer, and wonderful soul. Also one of my first crushes when I was 6 or 7 in the early 60's watching and singing along where I could with my mother, father, brother and sister in front of the black and white tv in our living room.
I think this was the performance they transferred to her album. Anyway she was in her best voice then, which means the best voice of every human being on the planet.
The world was full hope back then that the US and all mankind would become a society of decent men and women. And where are we and especially the US are now?
@justpassingby2358 Yes, l felt that we were on our way to a better world growing up in the 60's. 😥 It's been on a downward spiral on so many levels. "When will we ever learn?"
I believe that is one of her Martin 0-45 guitars. Small body (size 0), slot headstock, 12 frets to the body, the style 45 is their most highly decorated model, with abalone inlays, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, an ebony or rosewood board and a spruce top; it is an iconic Martin design that harkens back to the late 1800s. They are commonly referred to today as "Parlor guitars".
Tommy also had a Martin, but did not use it on the show. He had a Guild he used on the show and that one is in the Comedy Museum, the Martin went to his son Bo.
Isn't the D-18 the most popular Martin-Guitar? Didn't it become famous because the greatest Country & Rocklegends used that Version? I am really far from being a Smartass (i never played a Martin-Guitar, "only" a very decent and expensive Japanese Copy of ithe D-18)), but i ready and watched many Videos about the D-Series. Sweet Sir Galahad was not written to honour Joan's husband, but rather the (second) husband of Joan's sister, Mimi. His name is Milan Melvin. Sadly, the marriage did not last. Green green grass is performed for her own husband. David Harris eventually served 20 months in various jails, for refusing conscription.
And four months later Neil Armstrong first set foot on the moon with Apollo 11 . I watched that on the squadron dayroom at Naha AFB , Okinawa . It was a strange year .

David went to prison. They divorced a little while after he was set free. This relationship appears to be referenced later by Bernstein in his opera “Mass”. Many young men chose prison over both Canada or Vietnam. Returning veterans often spoke respectfully of their decision.
A beautiful performance. But her haircut, and her outfit, look oddly masculine. I don't think I've seen her with that look before. Anyway, this was five months before her appearance at Woodstock, in March of 1969 (not 1968). David was sent to prison in July. He was certainly never facing any possibility of being executed, so playing "The Green, Green Grass of Home" for him was a bit over the top. But "I Shall Be Released", a song about prison, seems perfectly appropriate. BTW, for those who don't know, "The Smothers Comedy Brothers Hour" is a name that was mainly used for a show that was a summer replacement (in 1968) for "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour". It was hosted by Glen Campbell. So I'm a bit surprised to hear it used here for the actual Smothers Brothers show. I'm also wondering if Baez did appear again later in the program and perform any additional songs.
