  • I was told by some Hungarians not to go out of the city center of Budapest, because i might got hurt, so i challenged them to go and see if been a black person in Hungarian towns and villages, Is Safe. I decided to go to Szentendre for a day trip, to find out and to see for myself, if what they were saying is true. So i can share with my fellow black folks. And this is my experience.

I guess that's just my American mindset. Most Americans are rude and disrespectful for no apparent reason. Meanwhile, Budapest looks beautiful and peaceful. People are showing you love and respect. The culture would take some time to get used to for sure. Thank you for this video. I feel much better about getting my dual citizenship in Hungary.

Hi, Hungary has never had colonies and also there were not slavery.
So there were only very few black people. . After second world war we were in the eastern block, our boarders were quite closed. Some black students came to study some.of them stayed after the university.
Actually the only black people we could have met was a doctor, engineer or scientists.
But I was 16 years old when I saw the first black people in real life.
So you can imagine how interesting IT was for us.
After the changes raccism arrives mostly with US films. So there were a few years when it was in fashion.
But that is disappeared quite short time..because all the black people we meet are nice and kind. So nobody has had any bad experience.
But IT can happen that someplaces people looking at you, because you are unique for us.
Especially in the villages. IT can happen that they do not speak English.
In the last 10 years we had illegal migrants who wanted to cross the boarder without any papers. So IT can happen that in villages close to the boarder they can call the police, who can check if you have papers. But those are places where there are no tourists usually. But they call the police because you are a stranger not because you are black.
We have mixed marriges, 2nd, 3rd generation.
      So you are welcome. ❤

I was born and raised in hungarian countryside near to the croatian border, i never learned from my family to hate anyone because they have different skin color. The first time i saw a black person was a same age child like me ( 9 years old) from Germany his name was Miche as far i can remember, he swimmed towards me started to talk and play together, its a good memory.
We never had colonies but since i work in England not once i was looked down because im white, ok dont give a damn because if people want to see racism then that WILL BE the only thing what they see even if you try genuinely convince them to rethink that logic. Skin color and culture can be vary, but underneath we are the same flesh, bone, blood human beings still cannot deny that racism and prejudice exists everywhere in the world and its not just about black people or white its exists literally in every country.

You managed to hit the hottest summer of the last period. In addition, you were there around noon in the hottest time. The shadows betrayed me :) It was probably a weekday, not a weekend. That's why there were so few people on the street.
African and Asian people are a common sight in Budapest and in cities with universities. Elsewhere, Chinese Vietnamese people are more common, Africans are not. In such an area, a black-skinned person is a special, rare sight. Rare things are looked at by people everywhere. This may seem like an attack, but they are just curious, they don't want to hurt him. Of course, idiots are everywhere, in every sense (for example, nationalist, political, racist, etc.). The press highlights these cases, and therefore it seems as if this is the normal situation. Similar cases can always be found in the migration situation. If there is no other news, this will be good too. People know these things, because they learned a long time ago that reality is often different from what the press says. It was already like that under communism. There have even been jokes about this... In these, we take advantage of the possibilities of the Hungarian language, often only one or two letters differ and the meaning of the text will be completely different. For example, osztogatni= distribute, fosztogatni=to loot. Those who approach in a normal way will be treated in a normal way. We have a saying about that. Roughly: as you say hello, they as say hello to you

That being said if you are Muslim in budapest nothing bad will happen to you the worst thing is you accidentally eat pork since there is lots of pork in Hungarian diet. Now for the gypsies…I think nowadays the problem is better but it’s tricky situation since there is many good gypsies who are singers or dancer or musician (papai joci, Molnar Ferenc caramel, olah Gergo) but tbh Gypsies have bad reputation in most countries around world it’s not because they are brown it’s because many they don’t care about education or working, they don’t respect Gadje either which is everyone who is non roma

My University has two slogan "Patriotism, Comradeship, Brotherhood" and "One for All, All for One." since 1735 (100 years older than the three musketeers). If you learn some hungarian phrases they will be more than happy. Like "jó napot!" (good afternoon) köszönöm (thank you) viszlát (goodby). The language is hard but if someone take the time to learn even some is an easy way to break the ice with hungarians. I travelled a lot inside Hungary and my experience says that people are nice almost everywhere. There are some people who are outrageous but with everybody. And people only staring if you dress differently or had darker skin because they usually not saw people like this, but they usually try to not stare. My family in Szeged welcomed migrants in 2015. Until they proved themselves not be worthy of welcome.
Be respectful and you'll be treated with respect. That's all there is to it. Hungarians are a pragmatic people and you won't be treated badly just for how you look. Except for criminal elements or those looking to take advantage of tourists, just like everywhere else.
I've followed Magyar and western news on the same events and what you read in western media amounts to lies by omission and half truths. No wonder you thought your trip might prove difficult.

The younger generation in Hungary are well educated and not racist at all. The older generation can be especially in rural areas but they just grew up in different times and haven't moved with the times.

Older generation? The first raccist against black came from the US movies.
Only black people in the village they were able to meet might be some doctor ín the local hospital.
