Awesome video! I am a direct descendant of Odo De Barry. Through my maternal Grandfather. (I was named after my mother's maiden name Barry)

I’m descended from the cork Barry family. My great, great grandfather having moved to England from Cork. My understanding of the the source of the name is that it is from the town of Barry near Tournai in Belgium. This I believe was Norman territory at the time of 1066 and the home of Odo de Barry. Odo had a castle in Barry in Belgium in the forest around Barry. I understand that he was one of the knights of William the Conqueror and have even heard that he was William’s half brother.

Thanks for the video Ruadh and I look forward to finding your books. My mother's parents were from this East Cork area, namely the village of Rathcormac, just south of Fermoy on the Blackwater river on the road up from Cork city itself. My dad, a McNulty (Mac An Ultaight, "Son of Ulster") of Lough Eske, Donegal, met my mum who was born in Birmingham in the late 1960s, where I myself was born. I used to joke then in the 1980s growing up that I was child of BOTH 'North' Ireland AND 'South' Ireland because of this. Ironically, as Barry Island is the closest beach to Birmingham, we indeed did use the Butlins family holiday camp there but that was before we put any connections to the place. On looking into Barry Island further though it looks like it was named after the Welsh Saint Barach as there is a chapel there, and that the Ango-Norman de Barris came from further afield, possible De Barre in Normandy itself. On a final note, congratulations on your pronunciation of the Barry war-cry "Buttez-en-avant" , but is it true or just apocryphal that the the town of Buttevant also comes from this cry?

Brilliant! My dad is actually from Castlefin which is just up the road from Lough Eske - small world! I'd love to be able to confirm that Buttevant takes its name from the motto, but I really don't know. Good story if nothing else! Good to meet you and thanks for watching.

@@ruadhbutler9143 hi, I posted a link to the Barry Family book. It goes way back to the Norman invasion. I think it says the Family moto is "Kick your way through ". Take a look at the link for Barry Family Records. It has a section an bad picture of Buttevant and information about the Barry Family who lived there. I think cows are living in it now, bless their hearts.

My 3rd great grandma was Mary Ellen Barry from Ireland. I am not sure which part and on 23 and Me I match to 10 counties lol. I was wondering where my Welsh came from, though and had no idea the Barry's also had Welsh lineages.

      Fascinating I never knew that?
I do know there is a Barry coat of arms.Barry is a very common surname in Cork. My Irish cousins children are living in Long Island, Paris and Barcelona. I was born in England but my outlook on life is more continental European.Brexit has been very divisive for people like myself.

I am an Australian with a great grandma on my fathers side with the surname of Berry but I have seen a record of her father being named as a Barry. She came over from Ireland. Would she have changed her surname or would his surname be misspelt? The only thing I know about her is that she married my great grandfather in Munnymore N.Ire

I actually live five miles from *Moneymore* in NI. Never heard of Munnymore so I suspect it's the same place. Just checked the local phone book: there are two Barry families in Castledawson (not a million miles away from MM) and one Berry family in Toome. Possibly long lost relatives? God knows spellings of Irish names have been messed up before! Maybe these Barries/Berries are relatives. Good luck with the investigating!
