  • Barry Island in the Vale of Glamorgan may be famous for Butlins holiday camp, the beach, the funfair and the arcades. But did you know it is supposedly the site of a miracle in the 6th century which led to the canonisation of St Baruc? This little known story led to Barry Island being the destination of countless pilgrims for the best part of 1,000 years. All eagre to drink the waters of the holy well, claimed to have miraculous healing properties. Barry Island was the Lourdes of the Vale of Glamorgan.
I also cover a fun bit of folklore. A story published in 1909 but possibly dating back to the 17th century about two men. One from Rhoose and one from Cadoxton who spot two swans landing on a beach at Barry Island which turned into the women of their dreams.
This video is an episode in the History from the Vale of Glamorgan. Written, presented and published by Welsh author and historian; Graham Loveluck-Edwards. Author of the book 'More legends and floklore from Barry, Bridgend and the Vale' which is published by Candy Jar Books LTD (Cardiff). In this series of short videos, I examine some of the forgotten ancient stories based on local history, legend and folklore. All based on places you will know on the county of the Vale of Glamorgan. I hope you enjoy them. And if you do, please subscribe to this channel and share them on social media.

Hi Graham lovely video, have ordered a book for my Dad's birthday and will pick up the others for myself. Can I ask if you've received my question sent via your email form on your website?
I grew up in Barry and I distinctly remember the ruin of the 'witches house' at the edge of Porthkerry, wonder if that's in the book!

Hi and thanks for your query and for buying my books. The witches House isn't in any of my current books but the legend of Catti Cwn Ciddy is, which is set in Porthkerry as is the mystery surrounding the lost castle. If you have any back story to the witches house though I would love to hear it

@@GrahamLoveluck Well it was just a tale I was told while walking to Porthkerry but I believe the foundations of the house are still there. So back then (30+ years ago) there was a welsh language primary school at the top of Park Road, just before you drive into the park. Well there is (or was) a woodland trail you can walk starting near the drive in entrance, and follows the wood down into the park coming out next to the golf course (if its still there). But Anyway about halfway down on the right was the ruin of an old house/cottage, only really the foundations but its right on the path. There were sea shells and limpet shells scattered around in the dirt which I was told were use by the witch in her cauldron doing spells. Truth is I don't know if there was a folklore myth of a witch or something my dad made up, but the ruins are real enough. Not sure what they were from but you might find it interesting to visit. Perhaps there's another story in it for you, I would love to know what the ruined house were if you were to ever visit.

I made other videos about Barry. One on the Roman remains and Dai Woodham’s locomotive graveyard. There’s also one about witches that has a Barry story in it
