  • Big Thunder Mountain is the mine train roller coaster at four different Disney parks across the globe. The original version opened at Disneyland in California. Near clones opened at Magic Kingdom in Florida and Tokyo Disneyland. Then the best version opened at Disneyland Paris. This review will cover the similarities and differences of all 4 versions.

These models inspired me to create a scale model spinning coaster with caves, waterfalls, geysers & animals. I would love to see WDW adding a train via that side track. While tons pf parks had their mine trains by then, Disney "Got it RIGHT!" by waiting + making it an experience! They did the new effects on the Disneyland version after I'd ridden it. I can't wait to ride that version.

I love this ride. The visuals and theming are so great. It is also a ride that has broad appeal because the front row is like a large scale kiddie coaster but the back row is legitimately thrilling. I totally agree that this is the best mine train, though I have yet to ride Colorado Adventure so I guess I'll see at some point.

I've ridden Colorado Adventure. That ride is great, but the Paris one still beats it.

I only did the Paris version, but it's a ton of fun. While not an intense ride, it packs in so much and had me in so much joy all the way through, plus the finale in the dark was incredible.
    Absolutely amazing ride

The laterals and janky airtime with the buzzbar are incredible. This is my third favorite coaster at Disney behind Guardians and Everest, but I don't think there's many family coasters better

    Canobie Coaster would say:
California's is a mirrored image relative to the other 3 versions, but the elements are nearly identical. This one is also the smoothest installation. While it is the oldest version, it was closed for a yearlong refurbishment from 2013 to 2014 to receive all new track and trains from Dynamic Systems. The other versions all run with their original track. I think the Tokyo and Paris ones are both very smooth after decades of operation, but the Florida one...
    A) is quite rough.
    B) has a shimmy at points, but it's mostly smooth.

Oddly, the Paris one is the only one without the bones at the end. I use to be obsessed with those bones when I was younger and I watched these POV’s religiously so it’s something I was able to point out.

Have you ever wanted to feel like you’re in a Disney Parks commercial? Well, then I strongly recommend riding at night during the fireworks. SO COOL.

I love the Disney world one! The laterals are actually crazy especially when you ride alone, like it’ll have you holding on tightly (I rode both in front and back and it’s WAY crazier in the back)

The final wholistic difference for me is that Tokyo's had no airtime for me. The dips and drops on that one are more gradual, so they lack the pops of airtime on the other 3. So when I mention the airtime in this review...
    A) it's not available on the California version.
    B) it's not available on the Florida version.
    C) it's not available on the Tokyo version.
    D) it's not available on the Paris version.

Big Thunder is a Disney classic for sure. I've only ridden the Florida version but I've been on it many times over the years. I love the placement of the station underground as it really enhances the theme. The trick track on the last lift hill always weirded me out as a kid seeing the front locomotive tipping side to side slowly haha. Great review! These rides have definitely stood the test of time.

Rode the CA version, second to last car. I expected a more dynamic ride then I got. What's impressing is how they dulled the ride like they did.

The Disneyland version’s little town at the end is from Rainbow Ridge. These facades are preserved from the original attraction in this location, Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland.

I operate this ride at WDW! It's got so many fun quirks and as someone who has operated Apollo's Chariot and Alpengeist the amount of modern conveniences this ride has is sorta interesting. Also 5 train ops is so fun.

I've only had 1 ride in total, and it was on the one at Disneyland, a month before I met you. I was thoroughly impressed with the visuals and that it actually had some forces as well. I was 12 when I last went to Disney World, and I was too scared to ride it after Space Mountain freaked me out.

I agree that the version in Paris is the best BTM, but these coasters don't hold a candle to Colorado Adventure, as mine train coasters go. That is the best mine train in the world in my opinion.

As beloved as this ride is, I think it might actually be underrated. I've only ridden the Orlando one. I prefer it to Space Mountain just because the theming is so Disney-perfect, and it's also actually got some intensity to it. The one thing I'd ask for is individually ratcheting lap bars--the shared lap bars mean littler kids generally get a scarier ride than they may have bargained for if they're sitting with someone bigger (this is my daughter's chief complaint about BTMR; she wanted to be more stapled than she got).
This ride is my wife and daughter's benchmark for the absolute top of their zone of thrill tolerance. If a roller coaster is more intense than Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, they're not getting on it.

I don't get the popularity for it, it does hardly anything for me, no laterals or airtime or anything. Now yes it's a family Disney coaster and it's meant to be smooth and mild and have tons if theming and I get it, but there are seriously several family coasters I prefer at normal parks, it can't just be all theming. This ride honestly might as well be a dark ride.
