Thank you so much for the information, we've been in our house for almost 18 years and never knew that we have to pay attention to the water softener, other than adding salt, I really appreciate the information 👍

if you get a filter system to get rid of the chlorine out of city water, then run it through a salt water softener. wouldnt you be putting chlorinated water back into the house?

Hi is the resin cleaner toxic??

Its amazing how using water softener cleaner isn't that well known. I had mine for 6 years and didn't ever know about this because the install guide never said anything about it, just keep salt in it. Well it stopped working for I don't know how long, it had salt in the tank. But I noticed white residue on dishes, shower heads clogging up, residue in the fridge water dispenser. So I used some hard water test stripped they said no change, so now im really confused. Turns out the test strips I had were not working at all, so I bought a water test kit from the local big box store and my hardness was off the chart at 15 grains of hardness. So my water softener was in fact not working. So I cleaned out the brine tank, there was some salt mush in there and the salt level was maybe 2 bags worth so it was under the water line. But inside the suction area inside that white tube there was a weird mush like melting snow. So I rinsed it out got rid of all the old salt put in new salt, and then did a fresh regeneration with a water softener cleaner. Magically next day my water was so soft it was weird! When you washed your hands they felt all slippery, feeling really refreshed in the shower. I tested it again and it was 0 grains. So now I put on my calendar water softener cleaner ever 6 months and I will never use that rock salt that is slightly clear ever again even though it did say for water softeners. I bet that is what created that nasty dirty mush even though it was years ago. I do have Iron in my water so I guess that could of been it too but its only .03gpg but maybe after enough years it just built up and made the beads stop working? Not sure what fixed it but its working well now.

I just moved to a new house and I don’t know how the water softener works even i am not sure if still functioning or no, as it look like 15 years old or more. The brand is AQUA BON.
    Thanks for your advise.

If looks that old, it is best to just replace it at this point. At 15 years old, you're long past the range where the resin needs to be replaced and the valve head parts are not reliable. With that old of a system, you're really throwing good money after bad trying to patch it together. The good news is that you are already plumbed for a water softener, so it's literally just disconnecting it and swapping the system out and replacing the shut off valves. If you have some very basic plumbing skills, basic tools and a Saturday, you can do it yourself since the plumbing is already in place. There are lots of reliable companies with good reputations online that sell excellent systems. Lots of good videos on YT to explain how to install one. Good luck.
