  • I have read a lot of review copies and received even more requests, so I thought this would be a good video to talk about how the process works for both you the viewers and you the author that may want to reach out to booktubers for reviews!

I think your approach is pretty much where all who accept them stand on them.
Back when I used to blog, KDP was still relatively new and I was happy to accept and read anything self-pub sent to me, but honestly so much of it didn't work for me or was just okay, so much that I just found myself disliking reading more and more. It didn't help that the expectations weren't really set well as yet either - I once had an author send me a pretty nasty, massive email berating me and demanding I take down a review because I said his book was just okay and needed an editor, lol.
Why that's relevant is because now that I'm talking about books online again after so long, I absolutely refuse to accept and talk about any book that I don't have a pre-existing interest in. Reading's my hobby and making video's just a fun extension of that. It's a harder stance than most channels take, but that's fine, I'm inconsequential and there's plenty out there willing to hype a book, especially for their Patreon members.

I've thankfully had pretty good experiences with authors (even when I'm not a fan of their books) but a part of that is absolutely setting expectations, and I know a part is absolutely just luck lol. I did also find myself getting burned out which is why I do still accept them, but am a bit pickier and don't provide timing anymore, because I just am not going to force myself through anything. But yeah I will absolutely hype books I love, but I'm not going to hype something I don't

When I first started arc reading I thought I had to accept them all or I wouldn't be able to ask for any again

I feel like you may run into that with some publishers lol, but yeah I feel like early on most of us feel like we can't say no, and it's so important to say no when vs. burning yourself out!
