GGK's Sarantium was originally just a big single novel but split due to length for publication, so if you got the feeling that the first book was just a lot of build up, it's literally just that. It's not a typical duology.
I actually thought it overall stood pretty well on its own with the ending (ableit a very open ended ending) but had issues with the main character as well as the way it was written overall. So far book two has been stronger for me though!
I finally got to Fionavar last month too! Will look forward to hearing your take when you get to it. Sorry to hear Red Mars didn't work out, but yea its definitely more character focused which I wasn't expecting - I'm about 25% in and still reading it now and then when I want an SF hit. I think most people have a better time with LoE because it's all the payoff from StS essentially, that was my experience as well though I did enjoy StS more than you did. Cool month all in all!
Why do you prefer GGK as a physical read? The audiobook narrators just not work for you or is it something else? Just curious because I sometimes prefer certain formats for specific authors too. Like Janny Wurts has to be on kindle for me because I know I’m going to have to look up the definition of a TON of words and it’s much easier to do that on kindle where I can just touch the word and have the definition pop up as opposed to grabbing my phone and having to type it in on the dictionary app haha
So the narrators I've listened to have actually really been good for the most part, but GGK's writing style I feel like just works better for me physically. He does tend to also do quick POV switches that can make audio confusing when you can't see the extra line for a chapter break
Wooooooooooo love hearing the praise for Shiang!! Glad too that Lord of Emperors is going better now with more finely calibrated expectations.
Really looking forward to Sword Saint!
To Green Angel Tower would've been my book of the month if it weren't for Warhost of Vastmark.
Gosh, yeah, that's such a tough one!
The metalcore references on its own makes me want to read darkbloom
Yeah that was the reason I decided to pick it up for sure!

I very likely will pick Red Mars back up when I'm more in the mood for something like that! Yeah LoE has been going much better for me so far!

@ Okay good to know 👍🏼 Haven’t read any GGK yet and had considered the audio route
