I remember a team from New Caledonia, perhaps their womens national team, came to play in Fiji. They organised a game against my sister's high school. The school didn't have a girls rugby team, they did however have a strong athletics program (so there were plenty female athletes) and many girls in Fiji played netball at a young age, so they had some idea of handling a ball (in fact I remember quite a number of the Fijiana teams, especially in the beginning, had crossed over from representing Fiji in athletics and netball). Selection was literally a teacher going around the senior classes and asking "Right. Who wants to play rugby"? When enough volunteered, they had a couple days skills training, and went on to thrash the New Caledonian team. This was in the 2000s
Remember back in the day women playing rugby would be a laughable thing. I’m glad the women 7s team and the Fijiana made a statement and changing the mentality of every Fijians in Fiji and around the world.
Stigmas were meant to be broken and the Fijiana is true testament to that doing their own thing in the face of adversity despite petty patriarchal minds that faded away instantly ever since the heroics in 7s winning bronze in the tokyo olympics and winning the Super W in Australia as the Fijiana Drua. I'm looking forward to how they'll perform in their inaugural debut in this world cup, especially against England and France despite the odds against them. Keep aiming high ladies, sky is always the limit to what you can do and best of luck in the WRWC2021.
Wishing the Fijiana Team a good outing against the number 3 team in the world 🌍, today. All the best for the upcoming Women's World cup in NEW Zealand 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️👌👌👌
I am a Fijian Male living in Fiji and I love and support the Fijiana and womens rugby in Fiji. Having said that I have never seen nor heard of the behavior being stated in this video ie. being spat on and sworn at etc. I have nieces that play rugby here and would be mortified if that was indeed the case.
It was a difficult road no one can argue with that, but perseverance and consistency, will carve your place in the world of women’s sport,i believe.its a hard hitting mobile game, and you have to be very very fit and strong to run your opponents off their feet.good luck.
England will put 70pts on them. But the Fijiana are winners simply for making it to the World Cup after all the social stigma back in Fiji they have to go through just to play.
