@Medcram - Question on the Utah Data per a potentially significant confounding variable...
Are they still calling anyone who has received their most recent dose or booster, “unvaccinated” during the following 14 days, if they are hospitalized for covid?
And does the “vaccinated” include those who got their first two shot series, or single dose product, but never kept up on any boosters for the following 1-2 years, or just those who have had a dose less than 1 year or 6 months ago, but more than 14 days?
These definitions become supremely important when making claims about what is happening to the “vaccinated” vs the “unvaccinated”
      Thank you.

    • @tunneloflight
      @tunneloflight 9 месяцев назад +14

It is good that it was mild. However, the immediate impacts and risks are only the start. Independent of those you now have a 10-20% chance of developing long COVID and suffering with that for years. Apart from that you have a 13-14% chance of developing an autoimmune disease as a result. And increased risks of dementia, cardiovascular disease. Even worse, you have a much higher risk of COVID derived clotting. The virus damages the bodies clotting mechanisms leading to a whole new set and form of clotting diseases.
Worst of all, you have now been aged by the virus’ impact on your body through at least three mechanisms - direct organ and brain injury, methylation of your DNA, and shortening of the telomeres on the ends of your chromosomes. At 53, the usual impact of those are 1) about 10 years; 2) about 6 years; and 3) about 13 years respectively. Whether you feel it or not immediately, COVID very likely injured you.
It is good that you didn’t suffer immediate lung or organ injury. But it is important to understand that that is not the only way this disease does harm. And that in about five months, your immunity will have declined sufficiently for you to catch the disease again; and in 9 months to potentially suffer even the most severe impacts should you be infected again.
I say this less to you I than to others. I worry for you and the impacts on you. I worry more about the impacts on others. We all must make our own choices. I hope for your sake that your luck continues. Do know that that it is a gamble.

thank you for the clarification- What will be important for myself, a Fam Med MD, is 1) are these admissions patients who are admitted for other reasons and happen to have COVID vs how many are admitted BECAUSE OF COVID, 2) how many ER visits, 3) how many infections are serious enough to be admitted, 4) how many of those wind up in the ICU, 5) how many die from the current strains, 6) how long it takes to recover for those folks every step of the way, 7) how many develop long-COVID. 8) how many in each step of the way are vaccinated vs not. I’m an OB/Gyn. It would be great to know incidence rate for COVID patients but it’s very difficult to get an accurate number. 6 people in my circle have had COVID recently. All had only home tests so were not reported as cases. All were very sick but able to stay home. So we really can’t see how many total cases are out there. That makes hospitalization rate a more reliable number.
It’s hard to say whether many of these people are hospitalized due to COVID vs despite COVID. So many of them are intermediate. Would that CHF or COPD exacerbation patient required hospitalization if they didn’t have COVID at that time?

It’s what we have seen most summers when it gets hot and people spend more time indoors with others, during COVID times, especially as new variants present themselves. Of course this usually coincides with either vaccine antibodies waning as well as previous COVID vaccines infection antibodies waning. College students are going back to dorms, students are starting school soon, too, in the next few weeks. Most likely the infections will increase as these groups come together indoors.

I just recovered from my first experience with COVID. It was not fun. My HR jumped from my normal mid 60s up to around 100. My blood oxygen level dropped from 99 down to 91. I had fever up to 101 and chills so bad that I thought I was going to break my teeth from all the chattering. I also had a major sore throat, headache, earache some coughing and sneezing. I also lost my senses of taste and smell. Worst of all was the body aches. I could hardly stand to roll over in bed. I took Advil and Tylenol together and that really helped but my doc called in Paxlovid because of my HR and blood oxygen level. Paxlovid worked really well but two days after completion of the course, I had Rebound COVID and had to go back home for five more days. My total time was two weeks and two days. I was tired for an additional week. I'm back to work and back in the gym now. I can't believe I finally got COVID, but I'm glad it was not Delta. I also took a multi-vitamin and extra Vitamin D3 while I was sick. It had been nearly a year since my last booster vaccine. I know so many people who have been sick with COVID over the past month. -Just a few short years ago, when the response to the pandemic brought the world to a standstill. Businesses were closed, people were arrested and beaten up for resisting the lockdowns. Many lost their jobs, numerous others were forced to undergo medical procedures they had good reason to object to.
People were subject to arrest for kayaking, surfing, walking in the woods alone during lockdowns. New Zealand fined people for driving into other cities for KFC. Australia locked people up in quarantine facilities. Many otherwise normal people lost their minds supporting these draconian laws, opting instead to censor and cancel anyone who would speak out against it.
In Canada, truck drivers were brutalized, unpersoned, had their business licenses taken away and their bank accounts frozen. In many European countries, the elderly were fined for refusing to take the jab. In Australia, people were brutalized by the police for not masking up in public. In the Netherlands, police sicced their K9 units on peaceful protesters.
And all the while this was happening, BLM protesters burned American neighborhoods to the ground while politicians like Kamala Harris supported bail funds for these terrorists. Antifa took over an entire neighborhood in Seattle, turning it into a free-for-all police-free zone where crime, including rapes, were rampant. Several people, including minors, were killed. Those living in the neighborhood were displaced, their businesses never to recover.
Countless were censored and canceled as conspiracy theorists for even questioning the efficacy of the lockdowns, of mask mandates, of the vaccines. Many today still are. You can't have these kinds of conversations on RUclips, on TikTok, on Facebook or Instagram. You can only have these conversations on Twitter.
Children were pulled out of schools to be taught via Zoom, their socialization brought to a standstill. The effects of their lack of cognitive development will have long-term consequences. The only silver lining was that parents were now made privy to what their kids were learning in classrooms, from teachers grooming them with gender ideology and critical race theory.
Even still, society didn't need to be locked down. And the medical workers who demanded respect for their efforts in hospitals were treated, at least for awhile, as heroes -- frontline workers deserving of respect. Trust the science. That is until many of them refused to go through with the vaccine mandate. Then they too, like everyone else who resisted, was discarded.

I’m am a 59 YOM and up to now, I managed to get away from a covid infection as my elderly and sickly mother lives with me. Four vaccine doses, the original versions and going to work on a daily basis, but masking down when I felt necessary. Scaled down social life for the same reasons. Two weeks ago my mother and I went to have lunch to a rather crowded restaurant, I didn’t hear a single cough or sneeze around, three days later we both started with the first symptoms. To make a long story short, the first four days we had very high fevers and all sort of strong body pains, totally out of control despite the medications, little by little we have improved although my mother at a much slower pace, now she has stomach issues. Yesterday I tried to leave home office as the company that I work for requires in office work, so I went to a lab for a test and I was still positive. By lumping all of the initial-course-only (single dose J&J, 2-dose Moderna & Pfizer) population in with the the initial-course plus monovalent booster population to form that single "vaccinated" category it meant that the data doesn't offer any insight into any increased protection in getting any sort of booster after one's initial course even if it was "only" the monovalent one. If they had defined the "vaccinated" group as initial-course only and then had two boosted groups, bivalent and monovalent boosted, if they had sufficient numbers in those more finally subdivided groups to get statistical significance that could have given some insight into the incremental benefit of a bivalent booster vs a monovalent booster. It could also have given some insight into the necessity of getting any booster at all, or looking at it another way the potential risk of having stopped after only one's initial course.

@@Medcram It’s monovalent booster I was saying isn’t separated out. Bivalent booster is, as you say, very clearly separated out into its own category but someone in the vaccinated group might have had just the initial course or might have had initial course plus monovalent booster so there is no way, as far as I can see, to tell from these data if there is any incremental benefit, over and above the initial course, from having also had a monovalent booster.

In the US the rate of hospitalization has increased, slightly, there is a small uptick. The same has been seen in the UK and in some other European countries. This is not unusual when new variants emerge, where they crop the low hanging fruit. It is likely to cause a new wave, by with a relatively low peak.
The new variants appear to cause similar levels of disease as the previous variants.
Increases in ICU admissions and deaths lag the increase in hospitalization by a few weeks; increases in both are likely but should be small in number.
They need to be monitored, but reporting is now rather poor.

Unfortunately, health officials gaming the statistics again. In their data collection (at 7:45) they need to break apart unvaccinated from partly vaccinated rather than treat them the same. I know. I used to work processing cancer research data. It costs no more to make those distinctions. Simply create multiple fields in the database, a task that can be done in a couple of minutes. Researchers, for whatever reason, fail to do that. Some have axes to grind, in this case making people get double shots and boosters.
-Doing that would provide useful data about the effectiveness of one versus two shots in a series.
-It would provide useful data about how quickly a vaccination works rather than giving it an automatic free pass for two weeks.
-It would permit pulling out data on how quickly immune systems acquire immunity and why. Good sense suggests those with sound immune systems acquire a vaccine-induced immunity faster than those with poor immunity systems. That data would be a field that tracks the time between vaccination and a diagnosis of Covid.

Probably too early to have any meaningful data available on the actual case numbers of myocarditis requiring hospitalisation associated with COVID EG.5. Assuming (a big assumption based on the information available, i.e. none that I know of) the incidence of covid associated myocarditis is no different with COVID EG.5 to previous strains, then, based on one study (Dec 2022)*, about 4% of all covid hospitalisations experience associated myocarditis. As such, with the current limited upswing in hospitalisations attributed to COVID EG.5, one can reasonably assume there would be a minimal number of increased hospitalisations due to covid associated myocarditis.
If, however, you are asking in relation to hospitalisations associated with Covid mRNA vaccine related myocarditis, then I suspect there will be no increase as there has not been an upswing in new vaccinations/boosters during this time (last month or so) and the incidence of the related adverse event is well documented to be markedly lower than that associated with covid illness. In addition, one expert consensus paper (Sept 2022)**, commented that "...fortunately, the majority of [post-vaccination myocarditis and/or pericarditis cases] are mild and not associated with hospitalization or severe complications."

I would like to know, in addition to vax and unvax status of those who present to hospital with covid, is their vitamin D level. I was happy to see you talk about vitamin D in your 10 tips if you get Covid video, and stress that you need to be taking it BEFORE you get sick. Early in the pandemic, doctors that were testing covid patients for their D levels showed that most people who presented to hospital with severe covid had d levels in the tank. Some weren't even breaking double digits. This might explain why BOTH vaccinated and unvaccinated still can end up in the hospital. Especially vaccinated. What is your opinion on this doctor? What if, in the end, it was something as simple as this? Personal experience of my family who is NOT vaccinated, but pay very close attention to our D levels is that Covid was a cold for us. I have had it twice and the second time was hardly a cough and sniffle. The first time I thank vitamin D, the second time I thank D and my natural immunity which now recognizes Covid.

It doesn’t mean I don’t supplement. There’s no harm in doing that so long as it is done reasonably.

I mean unfortunately we don't really know if this surge is "not as bad as previous surges" though, right? First of all, it's still early days. Second of all, we know that the accuracy of covid numbers has decreased because of less support in the form of accessible and accurate tests. If you look at wastewater levels, we're shedding an _enormous_ amount of copies of covid. We're actually higher than 2021 at the moment according to Biobot.

Also, I'd be curious to see data that gives % protection against long covid by vaccine status. Not dying is obviously preferable but I think the discourse about risk is underappreciating the life-changing effects of being chronically ill/disabled. The numbers suggest that even if you're vaccinated, you have almost a 1 in 10 chance of having longer-term effects from infection.

I'm told it kicks butt and doesn't take names. The person I spoke to today said she was sick for six days. She had two vaccines and Covid once. She lives in Cincinnati. She didn't have to go to the hospital but it was a lot to deal with.

@@Spicy_guero for me, reduce social contact, stock up on food and emergency items in case I get it, get the bivalent, buy a test kit, and if something does come call my doctor for a Molnupiravir Rx. That's not a big shift. Where I live people still do the six foot rule still and some are starting to mask-up again.

@@Spicy_gueroPrevious infection and at least nominal vaccination does little to prevent this strain, and the severity approaches the threshold of hospitalization. We know it does at least sometimes reach that threshold, but that is something I want to know more about.

Love, love this doctor, and his sane, and valid responses to Covid. I spent many hours listening to him because my whole being REJECTED the vaccination, and that was MY decision, BEFORE I knew of this wonderful man. I learned about hot and cold showers, if infected, etc., and the protocol which I followed all through the Pandemic. My husband and I escaped. Then, when Omicron came around, I relaxed my routine, thinking that if we got Omicron, we might get natural mimmunity. That happened...We got Omicron, and it was a breeze. NOW, I am back, following...thank you again for keeping us informed ...SANELY!

And this is the payment that I do this for! Thank you! Just to know that there is someone out there who has now learned how to protect themselves in the event that they become sick and there is no vaccine, no medications, no other medications that feed into the false political dichotomies, you now have a simple understanding of you own human body and the things that you can do with the need of a doctor, or pharmacist or anyone else. That's not to say that we can't take advantage of technology that is available. But we must be ready to be able to treat ourselves and others in the event of another pandemic! Blessings.
