- DAY IN THE LIFE: Hospital Sonographer on SWING shift | Room set up, patient load, + much more!
What's up RUclips fam and welcome back to my channel! If you're new here, HERRO, I'm Geselle and I post about life: ultrasound, Vegas, Disney, and travel. I strive to spread positivity and happy vibes in all that I do! THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE!
Today's video is about one of my passions: ultrasound. I take you to work with me on a swing shift. We're called ultrasound technologists and more formally sonographers. Yes, we scan babies, but it's definitely more than that, especially in the hospital. I show you how I clean up/set up my patient room, types of exams we get, and what it's like to work in a hospital where you never know if you're going to leave on time.
I hope you enjoy this video and come back for more! If you do, don't forget to kindly hit that LIKE button and SUBSCRIBE so you can be apart of the family! Help our SonoGes family GROW!

I commented on your other video and i'm in love with your Sonography videos!
Thank you so much! Sure I could do a video on that! Every city is a little different but in general typically the same! 🥰 doing your research and seeing if they take volunteers!
What kind of specifics do you want answered? Like if you’re a student and want to volunteer/ shadow? Or volunteering after becoming a sonographer?
Geselle Rufin like how to volunteer as a student ✨❤️ and yes you’re definitely right it does vary I think Texas is slightly different then other states about it though 😅
@@HerShenanigans awesome I'll definitely get that going for you!!! ooo Texas! That's awesome I have some friends in Texas! :) You got it girl! Thank you for responding
Geselle Rufin no problem thank you as well! Sorry for such a late reply I fell asleep haha 😅
Super interesting! I did my nursing so some of this looks familiar 💚

Geselle Rufin I’ve completed it, but am unsure if I want to continue 😅 xx
Lol I don’t blame you Jade! Originally I wanted to do nursing and I volunteered and did not like it at all 😂 major change had to happen!

fenofy. tp thank you friend! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the field and to others. Xoxo 🤍
Hi love! How do you split the workload since there’s multiple techs?
Hi hun!! We usually make sure someone is covering the ER, someone is signed up for multiple upstairs, and someone is an ER backup in case it gets busy. But the shifts are split up to where this is possible. Usually AM tech does the abdomens and routines upstairs. Swing shift usually covers ER. And night shifts usually can do routines upstairs and also help ER when needed. We have work phones to keep things organized but a schedule is made and if you’re going to do an exam you have your initials on it. It gets highlighted when done, and usually someone is running the desk or “workflow” so that they organize things and answer phone calls, etc.
Thanks Geselle for making these vids! I'm an aspiring sonographer. I am watching vids everyday to take a peek into my new future career. I have been accepted at the college for Spring sem that I want to attend- just waiting on 1 transcript to know where to place me for prereqs as a pre sonography student! Can you do a vid on time management & pacing yourself with busy hospital workload? I know stat is priority but everything with else, once you see what is to be scanned, I'm assuming you just have a general idea of how long each will take under normal circumstances? Also, could you elaborate on the "challenges" of the actual program & field? Is it mainly physical exhaustion vs mental agility? Sorry this was long! Thank you!
Amy C. Hi Amy! Yes this is perfect I’ll make a video especially for your questions thank you for this and congrats on getting into the college 😍 that is an accomplishment in itself! 🤍🤍🤍 since your question is long I’ll give you a short answer here but will answer in a future video soon! - time management: you’ll have a list of exams and you’ll be taught in clinical how to choose what you should do first, especially if you work with others you might have a more experienced tech teach you the ropes of what comes first and priority. For example, if you have pediatric cases like a pelvic that needs their bladder full, that needs to be prioritized more. Or if you have a testicular on a young kid, that is very important and takes precedence. Or abdomens, they need to be done very early because usually the patient is “NPO” (nothing per oral.) so I’ll go into more detail like that! As far as challenges of the program, it’s taking it one day at a time because you will be given so much information at once. Focus on what you can and once you get one protocol down move on to the next. Usually the programs are organized by type of exams: abdomen, vascular (venous/arterial/carotid), obgyn, etc. It is mainly mental agility, but the exhaustion may come when you throw clinical into your schedule. Stay tuned for your special video, Amy! ✨ and good luck!
@@lolgeselle oh I feel special! Lol 😆 Thanks a mil Geselle! Looking forward to it!
You should also consider going LIVE one evening!
Amy C. You are special ❤️❤️❤️
Amy C. I’d love to but scared no one will show 😅
You have a very likeable personality. 😁
you’re so sweet, thank you 🥺💓
@@lolgeselle No problem. I've been really enjoying your videos!
So just out of curiosity what if you have like IBS or crohns and when you need to go to the bathroom you have to go like right then and there how do you coexist with that with this career? :)
Shanna Johns hey girl! That’s a great question! In my opinion, as far as coexisting with the career, try to find a place of work which can help you out in those situations. For example, working somewhere with multiple techs so you’re not alone, maybe someone can step in to help if you’re in the middle of the exam. But I’m general, if you have your patient in the room and you’d have to go right then and there, if they’re stable enough and not like in a hospital setting where they need to be watched the whole time, you can say, I’ll be right in with you in a few minutes, and go do your thing. If you think you’ll take long, then maybe have a coworker take over the patient for you. Try to make things less stressful on your part. Try to find a routined schedule to help train your body in a way. But let your supervisor or lead tech know about the situation and I’m sure people will be of help! Try not to work at a place where you’re on your own. And do your best without harming the patient or putting them in danger. 🙂 Some outpatient places have bathrooms right outside of the patient exam rooms.
*but in general
Ur video 📹 r so cool & interesting. Thxs 4 sharing
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Nice
Thank you!
May I ask about how many patients do you see in a day?
I see anywhere from 12-15+ patients, some exams are shorter than others :)
Do you ever wear a w hite coat? If not, why? I had the assumption RDMSs wear lab coats?
No, I don’t wear one, white coats are pretty much for doctors. But I’ve seen other programs who do give them white coats. 🤷🏽♀️
What school did you attend and how was your schooling experience? I am looking for a good school to get into in the Htown area.
Went to UNLV! There’s two options in Vegas, UNLV bachelors or CSN associates. School was good, tough to get into but doable once you’re in!
I am so confused as to the accreditation stuff too! WHICH is important CAAHEP OR ARDMS? I do not want to screw up and pick the wrong one and waste my time and $
@@crystalrodriguez4600 CAAHEP is the accreditation for the school. ARDMS is the “registry/licensing” you will get to become a sonographer (similar to NCLEX for RNs). If you are planning on UNLV or CSN they are both great and trustworthy schools.
Thank you so much for clearing that up! I am in Houston Texas so I am looking for a program out here. I am wish i could get some insight for the schools here. I see mixed reviews online. Some say CHCP IS A SCAM others say PIMA is also a scam. The community colleges here ask for tons and tons of prerequisites. So frustrating. I waa feeling so excited and now I feel defeated.
Nice 👍
Working in the hospital is fun!
Look at you :]
hehe ily always
"That Girl" aint got nothing on you, Giselle!
I appreciate you!
How many days do u usually work a week working at the hospital ?
Alyssa full timers will work about 36-40 hours. Depending where you work, 5 eight hour shifts, 4 ten hour shifts, or 3 twelve hour shifts. I am per diem (as needed) so I can work anywhere from 12 hours a week to up to 30 hours a week.. and if they need me more I can come in too for coverage. But essentially 3-4 days!
lolgeselle *thank you this was really helpful*
