They do live with in the range of Jaguars so they probably on occasion bump into each other. They are known to be shy and docile in the wild and will most like ly not attack unless provoked.
Even though they are large enough to hurt or potentially kill people, there have been no known fatalities from this bear in South America. Hope that answered some of you're questions on this species.

"They're one of the only bears found in South America." They are THE only bear species in South America, tremarctos ornatus.

It would be amazing if this species gave rise to a new lineage of Short-faced bears like how the Clouded leopard might give rise to new Saber tooths. This is the 4th largest bear species behind Polar, Brown and American black bears but its bigger than Asian black, Sloth, Giant panda and Sun bears.

If it exists, it's been tamed once or twice, with varying success.

In the Pleistocene epoch, the spectacled bear crossed the Bering land bridge from Siberia into the Americas. In the uncompetitive environment of North America, they were allowed to thrive and eventually evolve into the giant short-faced bear. A titanic predator who's reign was challenged by none. Except maybe Clovis Man.
At least, that's how I understand it. Feel free to correct me.
