Nore RE 4:23. Once a tick box is entered in a document, it is not just a matter of clicking the box and a tick appears within it. Rather a dialogue box opens with check box field options. Which to and end user is not the same as simply clicking and having the tick mark appear.

A good extension to all this is to know that when you select properties (5.24) you can also change the checked symbol to a ticked box rather than an X. A further extension is to assign the unchecked form as a letter or number and the checked form as its enclosed alphanumeric form. This allows you to circle a letter or number on a click.
Question? Under the developer box it shows a clickable box with a CHECK MARK in the box, but when you select it and insert it in a word document it automatically changes to a clickable X. How can you change that to the CHECK MARK as the default? Great info. thanks

These tick boxes are symbols, or characters, you can't put numbers into them. You'd either need a font that includes those sorts of characters, or use a numbered bullet list. I hope this helps.

Hello Dan, firstly make sure that Protection is not on. Then go to the Developer Tab and check that Restrict Editing hasn't been enabled. Let me know if neither of those help.
I did all that and it did not work for an already old existing Word document in compatibility mode (*.doc file). It works for a new/empty Word documents (*.docx file). So I created a new/empty Word document and copied all contents from my old Word document (*.doc) to the new/empty document (*.docx) and the check box button and other buttons in the "Controls" section of the "Developer" tab are enabled. I hope this helps somebody.
