The only two that come to mind are the dojo & hillstream loaches. Don't know if the khuli can do the cooler temperatures. I've heard some stories, but it doesn't mean it optimal for them; you know?
Alexander's aquariums I made a vide please check it out on my you tube channel about gold fish and I have a question for you in the video love the videos keep up the great work
The amanos I got from you lived with my goldfish for over 5 years. (They’re still alive) our goldfish was alone with just them. We used large gravel as the base just to give the bottom able to scape hills in it. We tied our plants down with fishing weights and zip ties buried deep into the lower gravel. Sometimes we’d even put slate against them so he could rustle anything loose. Now you’ll have a way to dispose of any duckweed you may have.
Misgurnus anguillicaudatus would be good. I think you actually have a big pond on your property yes? If so both the loaches and the goldfish could go live in the pond if they ever outgrow the aquarium, my loaches overwinter just fine (in se PA). As for plants I would look again to the pond, put some Anacharis/Elodea in there - I know you don't like stem plants but they grow fine just floating, doesn't need the same care as many stem plants.
I have 3 albino dojo loaches in my sub tropical tank and they are excellent. They have all stayed around 5 inches long and are very active. In with gold barbs, BN plecos, and danios.
Dojos are the loaches I see recommended as goldfish roomies. I've just had a Thomasi (L-188a) pleco with my two fancy goldfish for the last 18 months, but you're probably pleco'd out. My fish have done well with anubias, java fern, crypts, pogo stellatus Octopus, Crinum calamistratum, and hornwort.
Hello been looking forward to this video. I'm 60 years old at 5 I won a goldfish at a fair in school. My dad said goldfish the Disposable pet he won't live past the night. Breaking this little boy's heart. I took him home. And my older brother. Helped put it into a 1 gallon bowl.40 years later one day Mr G up and died his last Aquarium was a 40 gallon kind . In Mr Gs life time he out lived my Father and older Brother.
Thank you for the update on the goldfish! I have a comet goldfish that I keep in his own 55 gallon bachelor pad, and it's actually pretty densely planted on one end. I used a lot of anubias, bolbitis, cryptocoryne, and valisneria, which for the most part he leaves alone. Occasionally I'll find a plant or two floating at the top, but that's just because he's a boisterous swimmer! I've left about 2/3 of the aquarium as open swimming space for him and his only tank mates are a few mystery snails. Goldies are the best!!
Nice to see an update with the goldfish. The moss balls have done well in my goldfish pond and here in the South my goldfish have done well year round in an above ground pond also.
My family and I have 4 dojo loaches (also known as weather loaches) and they are cooler water species. Things to keep in mind - while preferring cooler waters, they are also known for their jumping so you would definitely want lids on any tank they are in. Also, they are VERY active and this can sometimes be too much for a lot of fish species - especially smaller community fish or fish who are calmer in nature.
Brandy Swett I have dojo loaches and I wouldn’t ever house them with my goldfish personally. Also don’t think people realise how much room they need or how big they get
My Dojo loaches are bonded to my goldfish, I swear they love eachother! I love my cold water community aquarium. Few different kinds of Goldfish, koi, mountain minnows, white cloud minnows & dojo loaches. I could watch it for hours!
Ps- goldfish & koi go out into the pond in the spring. I only bring them in for winter in a 120g. My dojo loaches remember them & come to eagerly greet them. Dojo loaches are like the ferrets of the aquarium. I absolutely love them! Always out & into mischief.
I think the tank would look absolutely beautiful and complete with some anubias, gold dojo loaches, gold barbs, and more of each species already in the tank!
I have goldfish in with grey and pink minnows, a silver tetra and a male beta. They all get along really well and the goldfish are pretty large now and don't bother the small fish. It's very peaceful and I've had them all together for about a year now.
I kept Comets with Odessa barbs for years with no problems along withsome Weather Loaches and a Common Plecostomus. It was a fascinating tank, always something going on. The only plants I had luck with were Anubius and Java Fern.
Bristlenose pleco, hillstream loach, several danios, endlers, guppies, white clouds... So many fish would be an amazing addition. I can't wait to see what you do.
It’s a lovely tank .and it’s nice to see the humble gold fish .in my tank I have zebra fish danios. Also platy. With whitecloud. And the weatherloach. And vailtailgoldfish 2. 5foot tank been running for a while
This is precisely why you have so many different species of plants and so many tanks - you have this giant canvas and thousands of brushes to paint with. What an enviable position to be in.
I adopted a fancy goldfish and a dojo loach a while back. That loach was awesome with the goldfish. The decorations I have in my goldfish tank are all synthetic
I have had a 55gal with 2 large goldfish, a school of white clouds, 4 giant danios, 3 dojo loaches and 3 cory cats for 5 years. No heater just the room temp of my living room. The white clouds have spawned at various times. The goldfish dominate the tank because they are bigger, but they don't both the other fish and everybody else has thrived. None of the fish will eat java fern or moss, so those are the only plants in the tank.
Anubias and java fern do work great! Vallisneris also! Love it, you can maybe ad an wheater loach and some corydoras paleatus, they can also go cool water! And some sewellia maybe.... great video!!
Apart from the classic Dojo/weather loach could go with either the the grey banded loach (Nemacheilus selangoricus), can get to about 6-9cm and does ok in temp's of 23c or little bit higher and something a bit bigger being the horse head loach (Acantopsis dialuzona) which gets to 30cm but does much better in cooler waters going down to 4c. You could also go for blood fin tetra or panda garra's.
I know weather/dojo loaches tend to be housed with goldfish, but I have never actually looked into it farther than that. I've often seen them sold from the same tank. The tank is lovely and makes me want to do a set up for some goldies. 88 I really miss having goldfidh
Also best loach would be a weather loach I think in America they are known better as dojo loaches. They thrive in cooler waters and don't grow huge but they aren't too small to be ate etc
I keep Anubias barteri, Bolbitis heudelotii, Cryptocoryne wendtii (bronze) and Java Fern (regular and Wendelov) in my goldfish tanks. I keep your good ol' classic Fantails and Ryukins, which are huge in size filling up my palm plus fingers, entirely. They devoured the Amazon Sword, and picked away at all new growth on the Crinum calamistratum, the latter of which surprised me. I've since removed the Amazon Sword crown and the Crinum, and they are thriving in another tank. I'll try putting back the Crinum once it gets much larger. I have not added them myself, though I know numerous folks who keep Dojo (Weather) Loaches with their goldfish, ensuring that they are an appropriate size to the goldfish when introduced to the tank. They get fairly large as you know, but goldfish grow quickly so it shouldn't be a hazard. Cory keeps Hillstream Loaches in his 800 gallon GF tank, but that makes me nervous. Lol. i really like how you have arranged the wood in this tank. I'm looking forward to updates!
I have had dwarf sag in with my goldfish before and they didn't eat it. But large goldfish might pull it up. I didn't have that problem and my two goldfish were pretty large when I had the dwarf sag in their pond. I only removed the sag because it was easier to keep the bottom clean without it.
We have some goldfish here too. When Goodman (A rescue Oscar) passed we pulled his pet Gold fish and gave them a 40G Breeder. It is such a waste of a breeding tank but we felt it was the right thing to do. Oh and loving those Red Bards.
I really enjoy my Batik Loaches (Nemacheilus triangularis) Don't see them a lot, at least not around here. They are active, not shy and very interactive with each other .
I was so excited as soon as I saw this title!! I knew goldfish were not on the top of your list and then thought, those tub goldfish sure got to ya😂hehe! I'm all about goldfish so I can't wait to see how this turns out!❤️
I have 12, 3-4 inch clown barbs and they are usually fairly active, but do spend time hiding away. They are fast and aggressive when being fed even taking the tablets away from my corys. They have also pretty much destroyed my Amazon swords.
they've got a tank!!! i've got 2 Weather loaches(dojo) with my common goldfish/oranda/shubunkin, all outside in a non-heated IBC tank, all seems to handle the cold winter temps here in north Wales... interesting to see how this tank will end up :)
You could try Ambastaia nigrolineata loaches, though they are not easy to find. Similar to Ambastaia sidithmunki but prefers slightly cooler water . More of a nano than dojo loach, I think you may like them. That musical interlude was lovely and went well with the video! I have a soft spot for non fancy goldfish ( when I see some of these fancy abominations... Sorry but I have an ethical objection to breed deformity as a strain.) My father used to breed goldfish, specifically for color traits. We had a beautiful maroon strain with white tip fins, unfortunately after a certain size they would turn a dull brown or orange...any way your two are wonderful! Behaving like fish and not struggling to swim or pick food from the substrate :)
I love the goldfish. I keep red tiger lotus, crypts and java fern with mine. I think that dojo loaches would do very well with your goldfish, they like cool water.
I remember hearing on other videos a while ago, that goldfish are not ideal with some other fish, due to their food needs being more "basic" vs the fancier foods that most other fish get...it will be interesting to see how they do here. I do not know for sure food will be an issue, I just remember someone on some video I watched mentioning it. ie do not feed goldfish food to other fish and vice versa. Good luck :)
I runned a community goldfish tank for quite some time... i have to admit, i love them but they are kinda bitchy. Only plants they werent fancy to dig out or eat were anubis, cryptocorynes, vallisneria... everything else was destroyed within hours. another problem I ran into: they grew alot faster and started to go after ghe other fishes... i had to get them their own tank in the end... they really fun to watch because they are really active and have quite a busy day but never again in a planted community tank!
I have had luck with anubias (regular and nana petite), Amazon Swords, Vallisneria and Windeluv Java Ferns. What I have crash and burned on is Micro swords (they kept uprooting them), Water Sprite (tasty snack) and Marino moss ball (Ripped it apart and even months later I'm finding bits of it when doing my weekly cleaning). My goldies are buffalo head ranchu so I'm not sure if commons will be the same are different when it comes to what they won't eat or destroy.
I think it's great, any suggestions I would have made you've already handled or have in the works👍. Perhaps another branch to provide more cover for the brown goldie while it's still small🤔. Love your videos Rachael!
@@TheBSideDJ Brochis can be safely kept at 68 degrees F, smaller cories like trilineatus, paleatus and small aeneus could be swallowed by larger goldfish which will test anything they can fit in their mouth. Can wind up with goldfish being choked
I have been enjoying your RUclips channel since October when I got my first Betta in my adult life. Today I sucked up my female betta while doing a water change . It killed her... 😒you once showed a plug for the siphon. ... can you tell me where I can get one?
Never say never..... those Barbs are very nice looking. What are they the ones with the yellow dorsal fin? Have you done a species spot lite on them? If so I’ll be hunting for that video.
As someone who has kept goldfish for almost 35 years it drives me nuts when people scream goldfish are cold water and cant go with anything else. Its bull I wouldnt do barbs they are nippy. Gary Hater who has kept them for 50 years successfully breeds rainbow and guppies. I definitely do guppies as it keeps the mosquito larvae down in the summer and their not nippy. Your white clouds I bet would do lovely as well. Steer clear of plecos or other fish that may like to suck the slime coat and or spiny fish such as cories as if your goldfish do try to swallow them it doesnt usually end well for both.
That’s good news. Love your videos and really look forward to your updates. You have inspired me to keep various fish that can tolerate my water parameters. Keep them coming.
I think you should be fine with the aggression after some time. My skirt tetras have a tendency to bully each other then I move them into a new tank and they will bully newly added fish, but after a day or two they usually leave them alone completely
I wouldn’t mix others with goldfish, barbs can be very nippy and goldfish end up at the brunt of that. But more so goldfish benefit from a larger temperature range then barbs would benefit from. Goldfish can swallow a lot more then they seem and goldfish are big fish, I’ve seen them swallow Betta splendens whole, along with a mixture of danio, barbs and Corydoras. You’re goldfish are tiny so yet to show any issues. Plants are fine with goldfish given they have the enrichment they require but also you give a chance for the plants to grow back. There is also only one species of goldfish. This is promoting mixing goldfish with multiple other fish and particularly people will therefore do it with fancies due to your influence. And I have never really seen it work in the long term. I wouldn’t mix any loaches as their easily get eaten even if it takes years and weather loaches can be great but due to their activity levels require a really large aquarium and can be boisterous with delicate fancy varies.
I have asked this question too several hobbyist & got pretty much the same ans. Heard the myth or don't know. So if you have separated (with perforated type separation) tank, & you a male guppy on one side & a virgin female on the other will she get pregnant? This myth go back over 40+ years.

Yeah, I was about to comment the same thing. They get big, though. ~9->13" They can hold their own and are voracious feeders.
Add a shark 🦈
Yeah, they do get a good size, but goldfish get bigger, and their an inhabitant that can live with them long term.

Dana Reeder plecos are known to attack goldfish, look it up 😔
I know some do, but it depends on the personality of the fish. My rubberlip pleco is a shy one. He hides whenever the goldies get near him.

Steer clear of plecos or other fish that may like to suck the slime coat and or spiny fish such as cories as if your goldfish do try to swallow them it doesnt usually end well for both.
whats this plant, i didnt understand
Love all your videos!! I don’t particularly like barbs but the are pretty. Would the barbs bother the Sewellia?
Hope the little brown guy becomes more confident like the orange one.......
Today he is.
That’s good news. Love your videos and really look forward to your updates. You have inspired me to keep various fish that can tolerate my water parameters. Keep them coming.

I have a gigantic Amazon Sword in my goldfish tank. They eat the algae and duck weed. Both which grow faster then they can decimate.
Not sure if they're available in the US, but I've kept the (Cobitis paludica) loaches in cold aquariums for many years. Good luck :)
I have cobitis in my 150g hillstream. Phenomenal (and quite breedable) fish
@@RachelOLeary I'll check them out :)
@@RachelOLeary Hello Rachel, do you have any videos or tips on how to breed them? Thanks in advance, cheers :)
@@anotherthez7598 I think that the substrate choice is key. I Literally added maybe 5 and have dozens now
@@RachelOLeary Great, TY so much for the reply. I love everything about them. Cheers :)
I keep cherry barbs - 1 male, 5 females with my 3 common goldfish.
Oh my gosh those odessa barbs are gorgeous!
Also, you didn't say what the danio/rasbora is?
I honestly cant remember

Also, I think the Odessa males keep going toward the brown goldfish because they think it is a female.
Sumo loaches!
I am heavily considering them

I have asked this question too several hobbyist & got pretty much the same ans. Heard the myth or don't know. So if you have separated (with perforated type separation) tank, & you a male guppy on one side & a virgin female on the other will she get pregnant? This myth go back over 40+ years.
