The whole (sub)genre thing, is something that i've also been thinking about lately. On the one hand, it's not that deep. Genres are just marketing categories and is us drawing artificial boxes around something that is much more complex than those classifications. On the other hand, i don't think they are completely useless as marketing categories and to set expectations. But that can only work if we agree on what is or isn't part of a certain category. Cozy mystery is one of the subgenres that had a clear definition and very specific tropes associated to it. If we start to expand the label, there will be people who want "Cozy Mysteries" or people who want mysteries that are cozy, but maybe don't necessarily want to read the other category. Not distinguishing between those makes their life harder. It's the same thing with that not every dark book that has a school setting is automatically dark academia.
I agree, having sub genres helps to fine-tune the books you are looking for. Knowing that you like this specific mix and these certain books contain those elements is very helpful.
Though like you say, I think there will always be some grey areas as always happens when it comes to opinions and what fits those categories
📨As someone with zero artistic abilities, I am always in awe of your journals. Particularly loved the fox.
Stickers do all the work haha
I love the idea of a cosy reading vlog and what is a cosy book or cosy vibes. 🤔

❤📚❤️ A great September layout in your reading journal.
Thank you! Im pleased with how it came out
You are amazing!!!
Love the leaves and hedgehog in the opening! I have Letters to the Luminous Deep on my tbr. I had a false start with it this summer. Just wrong timing. I think curling up with it this winter will be perfect. Cozy or not cozy mystery hmmm. I think there is a formula to cozy mystery. Small town or small urban neighborhood + quirky mc with some quirky family or friends + food + murder that is not graphic . As for your planner from your partner sometimes simple is best. Life sometimes is just function without an aesthetic. ✉️ 💌
Thank you! Im looking forward to Letters to the Luminous Deep.
I agree with those elements, there are alot of books that play with those elements more I feel
I’m looking forward to your September themed vlogs! 💌📬

Thank you so much Kris!! 💕💕
I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on The Last Murder at the End of the World. It was just okay for me, but I think it has some interesting moments. In the Labyrinth of Drakes!!! I absolutely loved that book in the series. I think it might be my favorite. A Letter to the Illuminous Deep sounds intriguing. So many books I want to read. Can't wait to hear your thoughts!
Yeah I'm looking forward to reading it, I think it will be a good book to discuss

Not me recommending the Richard Osman book for the book club when you already had plans for it lol🙃 I’m so excited for the light academia video and the cozies obv. For me personally, I view cozy as kind of a subjective thing. Like I have books I would consider cozy sci-fi that if you just looked at the plot you may be like that’s not cozy. But I found it cozy and comforting and so did others which is why people talk about it as cozy (murderbot) and some people didn’t so they disagree. I don’t think it’d fit in the official sub-genre which is why when I recommend I say it’s non-traditional cozy lol. I just think a lot of times trying to over-categorize or set every book into a specific box makes the boxes meaningless because they won’t all perfectly fit and there’s not standardized categories like you need to have x,y, and z specifically to qualify. I would just much rather hear about how the book made someone feel like cozy or nah then the kind of technicalities on if it’s really cozy. I also feel that people will categorize a book based off what they like or dislike about it. Like someone else’s fantasy romance is my fantasy with a romance subplot. Someone else’s sci-fi horror is my sci-fi. Its all opinions and judgement calls on splitting it up into sub genres. We’ve already seen with fantasy romance that the marketing of the sub-genres is inaccurate cause they’re going to go with whatever is most popular and try to have their book fit that advertising wise lol. I think sub genres are good general terms I just think making them overly technical and standardized isn’t great because reading itself is subjective so everyone’s experience and viewpoint of the book is also subjective. And sometimes maybe saying how you define a category and then explaining why you think that book fits it is great so everyone understands lol. I will also say the every school book is dark academia is miscategorizing them lol but I think again that’s more on the publishers who are going with the popular sub genres. Also i love discussions on the sub genres and I understand that some people like to make them fit more specific boxes for their own stuff which is great I just think some things can go on vibes and there’s nothing wrong with both coexisting. Thank you for reading my long opinions the subject lol
@morganthomas3111 haha love the long opinions on it. I agree with you when it comes to sub genres. It's all based on how each individual interprets it, not everyone is going to agree on what fits into what category perfectly.
If the Richard Osman book gets picked for the book club I will swap out that book in the new releases video so it's no issue 😊
@@ReadingNymph yeah it doesn’t look close rn so it’ll probably be fine lol
