  • Yesterday I reacted to a live performance of this song. Ya'll enjoyed it but also implored me to check out the studio version because the lead singer was sloshed, apparently. Here it is!

I LOVED switching it up and checking out a live show in the last video. It puts a face/vibe to these bands. I got comments to do a studio version review as well. What do you think of that idea?
On some songs, doing a LIVE performance reaction and a studio version? LMK!

I like the idea! Live and studio versions are often great in their own way (though sometimes one sucks)

In all honesty it depends the band your doing the live reaction to. Some are consistent and always good quality. Then you got Pantera, honestly, up and down. Unfortunate but its true.

I believe u want to see the live set, cool, but then listen to the album version after to find out why the masses loved the song in the first place. Only a few bands can duplicate or do it live just as good as the studio version. Either way, I'm enjoying your journey through the metal I grew up with. Shout out from DallasTx 🤘🏽😎

    • @jamesburns8827

There are absolutely instances where a live version blows the studio version out of the water and vice versa. I definitely think if you're going to dive into a genre or a band you should do a mix of both. For example domination live in Moscow is better than the studio. Chris Cornell nothing compares to you live is better than the studio. But songs like Spoonman by Soundgarden or Cochise by Audioslave I think are better from the studio. So definitely mix it up

The high pitch squeal is a pinch harmonic. Guitar player plucking the string in a special way that resonates differently than a normal pluck, usually using a finger to lightly touch and alter the pitch

    • @jamesburns8827
      @jamesburns8827 3 месяца назад +9

The squeals are pinch harmonics. But the sound he's talking about is I believe coming from a whammy pedal. Quite possibly a combination of grabbing a pinch harmonic and using the pedal, but definitely using a pedal there

    • @LaganusWrex
      @LaganusWrex 3 месяца назад +4

I think you're both right. Dime used the Whammy II pedal on his pinch harmonics to get that squeal. Tried learning Becoming once and realized I couldn't make the intro without the pedal.

    • @tommypenisfingers

No dude, no pedal there. Only distortion and harmonics. He uses harmonics all over that section. Original commenter is right

To answer your question at 7:25 about the high pitch guitar squealing sound. It's called a pinch harmonic where you brush the string with your finger after hitting it with the pick to produce a harmonic squealing sound. Dimebag is one of the best ever at it! Listen to the song Cemetery Gates, he does a lot of pinch harmonics in the main riff!

Those high pitched squeals are called “pinch harmonics”. They’re really fuckin hard when you’re playing that fast and precise. I can do it, but I can’t do it NEARLY as fast (or with as much soul) as Dime, and I never will. Darrell was a once-in-a-thousand-lifetimes talent. The mark he left on heavy music can’t be quantified or overstated; and his legacy will never be forgotten.
    REST IN POWER, DIME.

Appreciate the studio version bro. My opinion: there’s a lot of songs where we will specify that you should listen to the live performance first, with that said you should add the studio version right after in the same video(Whether it’s actually listened to immediately after or later on matters less to me, mostly just cut together in one video). There’s also songs where you may want to go studio first & then live right after since there’s many bands that add/change things to live performances. With that said, Cemetery Gates by Pantera HAS to be your next video bro!!!!!

Semi-interesting thing about this song. That opening sound comes from the original demo. Dime was screwing around with a few pedals one night, hit on that sound, recorded it onto his four track (for anyone that doesn't know, this was back when home demos were largely done on cassette based recorders, and you can record four tracks on each tape), and figured they'd just replicate the sound in the studio when it came time to do the real recording.
    They couldn't.
The tone wasn't right, or the timing was screwed up, or the effects just weren't working out. They apparently tried for quite some time to get the exact same sound but in the end they just pulled it from the demo, looped it, and that's what you hear not only on the beginning of the studio track but also live.

Everyone saying that super high pitch at the end is pinch harmonics is only PARTIALLY right. The descending bit at 7:28 is played with a Digitech Whammy pedal. You can tell the difference because on the first couple of notes he's not playing anything. The strings are muted, which gives that percussive effect, but the pitch is still super high. This isn't possible with pinch harmonics. The Whammy can bend notes up to two octaves higher than their actual pitch.
He demonstrates the pedal early on in this video: ruclips.net/video/5noYfe7g8Rg/видео.htmlsi=BpxHvEsA7pp_6v7s

At the time of that Ozzfest, Phil was also doing a lot of painkillers and other stuff as well. He screwed up his back and neck and instead of taking time off to get it fixed, he just kept numbing the pain with various substances to keep the touring up. The substances and his abusive behavior are what wound up breaking up the band.

Since you like Pantera so much, you should try Lamb of God. I'd recommend "Redneck" or pretty much anything released 2006 or after. A lot of people would recommend "Laid to Rest"-which I think is a great song-but I think is not the best first song for you (better appreciated if you like stuff like "Redneck"). My second rec would be "Blacken the Cursed Sun."
As for Pantera and comparing live vs. studio tracks, "Cemetery Gates," which a lot of people are (rightly) recommending, you should consider the studio track vs. the version on Pantera's Official Live: 101 Proof album, which also features a kind of unique thing where they combine their songs "Hollow" and "Domination."

7:27 Guys he’s not talking about the pinch harmonic are you even listening to what he’s asking? Rob the answer to your question is that Dimebag uses a harmonizer pedal that echos what you’re playing but at a different pitch that you can choose so you’re essentially harmonizing with yourself in real time. In the studio this is no doubt done by just playing the guitar twice and playing higher the second time but live he would be using some sort of harmonizer pedal.
For example you can hear the same effect during the solo in the Domination video you did

If you enjoy vocalists who do a lot with changing the affectation of their voice, I would suggest Ghostmane - Fed Up

The high pitch is two things: a pinch harmonic, which is a way you pick a string can make it squeal, but also a whammy pedal, which has an octave shift function when you press down on it.
Studio cut is great, but no titties.

Those high pitched squeals that Dimebag is able make his guitar produce is a sound and technique called a “pinched or pinch harmonic”. Dimebag is famous for his ability to deploy this technique in an unbelievably wide variety of ways. The pinch harmonic is a hallmark - that never seems to get old - of the distinct Pantera sound.
You’re going to get gardening variety Pantera requests for songs like Broken and This Love and Cemetery Gates. And those songs all deserve their flowers. But based on your reaction to Walk and Cowboys From Hell i believe that you should skip right past Pantera high school and go straight to Pantera College.
You get it. I can tell. Your musical palette would like deeper Pantera cut classics like, Regular People, Mouth for War and Rise. Or newer cuts like Revolution is to my Name, Drag the Waters or the last single they released a sneaky hard song called, Piss.
Enjoy this beautifully deep and high energy rabbit hole you getting ready to go down. It’s going to be as satisfying and fun as it seems.

I dare you to listen to classical music such as
    Richter - Winter 1
    Richter - Summer 1
    Richter - Summer 3
Those are good introduction to classical music, especially you are already familiar to rock music. Then you will find quite similar vibe to those pieces
