    I picked up one of these from a flea market for $10 a couple weeks ago. Wasnt working because it had 30 year old batteries leaking in the handle. Removed the handle and spent a couple hours cleaning the corrosion out of it and presto- working Canon 814. Granted, the capacitors are probably nearing the end of their life, but for now, its a blast to shoot. Don't sleep on flea markets and estate sales. If the thing doesnt turn on, buy it for a couple bucks and see if you cant bring it back from the dead. Little risk, huge reward.

    I can’t recommend the Canon 814 series enough. All of them are really amazing cameras. I have the Canon 814 Autozoom Electronic, and it’s always given me great results. Pro8mm has always given me great results too with their processing and scanning. They are a bit more expensive than other labs, but very user friendly and reliable and always have quality service so I think the higher price is still reasonable.

      @AnalogResurgence  4 года назад +3

      The sprockets on Super 8 aren’t incredibly precise when punched in manufacturing! So if you were to say use it as a reference point for stabilizing or scanning then it could be an issue. On a good scan the frame should remain mostly stationary while the sprocket moves because of the variations in spacing.

      I would advise you to ignore your internal meter (they are old and crap imho) and learn how to use your external one for consistent results. Learn reflective and spot metering and read about the Zone system. The times given for shutter speeds in this video only apply to this Canon camera. The nizo 801 has a 170 degree angle and I believe this Canon has 150 shutter angle.

    This wide aspect maybe is the most impressive feature of Pro8mm cameras. What camera works with the same aspect?

    • @AnalogResurgence
      @AnalogResurgence  4 года назад +1

      The aspect ratio of the frame size seen here is the standard Super 8 frame size that most cameras have. The film is over scanned to see outside of the frame, but the frame is the same as most Super 8 cameras. Pro8 has in the past offered what’s called Max8 conversion for a full widescreen aspect ratio of the frame size that extends further on the right side of the frame. It is best to contact them and see which cameras they offer a Max 8 conversion for currently.

    • @mostlyfinnishlifeeventsand5112
      @mostlyfinnishlifeeventsand5112 4 года назад

      If you don’t mind going the Double Super 8 way (if you can put up with b/w film, shooting can turn out to be a LOT cheaper than with “real” Super8), at least some of the S8-modified Bolex H8 (Rex) cameras also have (almost) full-width gates even, in cases, approaching the Max8 aspect ratio (1.58).
      I have two modified Bolex H8 (Rex) cameras with widened gates:
      1, an RX model 3. This has an excellent ratio of 1,571 ( see for example ruclips.net/video/GZe0y0H1toA/видео.html ; particularly the parts shot with the normal/tele lens)
      2, a non-RX model. This is narrower (1,539) but still significantly better than the 1.44 ratio of stock S8 (example: ruclips.net/video/fXxgpnLYo5w/видео.html )
      Note 1: with both cameras, I used the standard (stock) three prime lens and not anything zoom. These lens are vastly different in the two systems. However, in both cases, they’re similar in that the widest one (5,5mm) has a narrower image circle than the (widened) Super8 frame. This is particularly the case with the non-RX version, which, originally, was a D-mount one (and not “C”). The normal and tele lens, however, fully make use of the available image area.
      Note 2: I don’t know how other (modded) Bolex H8 cameras behave - whether their aspect ratio exceeds the S8-standard 1,44. Should you want to go DS8 and purchase a Bolex camera, ask for a scan of a frame first to easily see the aspect ratio. (Prefer overscans if possible so that you can see whether there’s also full vertical space usage. My Rex above doesn't have a single(!) unused row; the standard H8 is a bit worse in this respect.) While I have no fewer than three modded RX cameras (and the above-mentioned non-RX one), only another one of them is in working condition at the time and I still couldn’t get its test roll developed, “thanks” to the travel restrictions caused by CoVid.
      Note 3:the above only applies to Bolex H8 Rex cameras and not anything “officially” supporting DS8:
      a, Quartz DS8-3. The aspect ratio (AR for short) of these are about the standard 1,44: 1,454 (example: ruclips.net/video/Jafd--1O8Oc/видео.html )
      b, Canon DS8: this is also almost standard S8-wide: 1,47 (example: ruclips.net/video/1zhHg-62ge0/видео.html )
      c, Pathé DS8: this is even narrower than the standard: 1,42 (ruclips.net/video/gmrCIv4JmhE/видео.html )
      (Too bad the Canon DS8 isn’t very wide - otherwise, it’s the go-to camera for me as the, compared to the RX primes, inferior-quality lens isn’t a problem with the b/w Fomapan stock and, othrwise, its usability is FAAAAAAAR superior to that of the Bolex cameras.)

So how did you center your image so nicely? I have a Super 16 converted K-3. Getting the framing right is a matter of practice (in the future I will use my cell phone to help it out). This Canon is not modified for Max8 (though that is a conversion that Pro8 is able to offer on special request). If you watch the footage you can see it has the regular Super 8 frame size because of the empty black space on the right side past the frame. A Max8 frame size would cover this entire area similar to Super 16.
