Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist at Stanford University who runs the Huberman Lab, which studies how the brain functions, how it changes through experiences, and how to repair the brain after injury or disease. In his career, Andrew has made many important contributions to the fields of brain development, brain plasticity, and neural regeneration, and repair.
He’s received numerous awards and recognitions for his research and publications, including the McKnight Foundation Neuroscience Scholar Award, the Biomedical Scholar Award from the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Cogan Award for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
In addition to being a tenured professor of neurobiology and ophthalmology at Stanford University, Dr. Andrew is a brilliant neuroscientist and teacher - he excellently explains complicated concepts in a way that everyday people can understand them and use neuroscience to improve their lives!
Andrew’s goal is to understand how the brain allows us to sense, evaluate, and respond to the world around us. He’s actively working on methods to re-wire and repair eye-to-brain connections for people who suffer from blinding diseases, as well as investigating emotions and how they drive human behavior.
Dr. Andrew is clearly an expert on how the human brain works - I can’t wait for him to share his wisdom with you today!

We’re not just telling stories we’re changing lives

Done. "We're not just telling stories, we're changing lives"
In 1991 when I was pregnant with my son. I watched an Oprah Winfrey episode in which an Asian woman had three children that were all prodigys. This lady wrote a book explaining how to raise a genius. For the life of me I cannot remember the title. I purchaed the book and began to practice the instructions. One of the points she empasized the most was that a baby's brain was a sponge. Constantly learning, while the neurons in the brain are making connections. Including while the baby is in the womb. She said to sleep with classical music on all night. Talk to your baby in the womb. Talk to them in a normal tone, not baby talk. Read to your belly throught the pregnacy. (His father thought I was crazy) Once the baby is born continue with the classical music, the reading, and to talk to your child as much as possible. She said that just because the baby cannot speak it doesn't mean they don't understand or cannot learn what you teach. Once the baby is about two months old, engage the baby with eye hand cordination this would connect the neurons that develop math skills. I would swing a blanket over his face and I could see him following it with eyes. By three months he would grab it. By this time he would hold his own bottle.
Well I continued to engage my son in this fashion.
Now the amazing out come. My son could read big words before he could talk.
Around 14 months when we read a magazine I would asked him to point out a certain word. He always pointed correctly. I bought toys that require eye hand cordination.
At age 3, he new all the States and its Capitals. Anything that I would teach him, he master. By the time he got to kindergarden, the school wanted to skip him to first grade, However the book said to never let your child skip grades because emotionally they are not prepared. That its better to be the smartest in his class than avarege in a higher grade. He was placed in a gifted program. The last day of elementry he recieved 23 out 25 awards. Boy by the tenth award parents were giving me dirty looks.
By age 12 he was taking engerneering classes at local University. By the tme he got to high school they ran out of math subjects to give him.
Today at almost age 30 he has 5 degress including a master in mathematic and
aeronautics. He has a pilot license. BS in computer science.
He thought himself piano and guitar and plays really well.
Those brain connections can be diliberately manipulated with external stimuli and directed to enahnce learning. I've searched for that book to no avail.
Now after thirty years doctors and scientist are finally dicusssing this matter.
I feel that my son is proof that it works.
Amazing! I wish I had the name of that book! But your comment might be enough for me to try and replicate with my future children :)
Impresive achievements, congrats!....but, is he happy?
A most for me, my two daugthers are no geniuses by any mean, but they´re happy, that´s for sure, and that´s the most important thing in life i think, their happiness....obviously, a nice education and see them progress is great, but we aren´t trying to elaborate geniuses, just good, secure, well prepared and happy people.
Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother?
For sure! I had an encyclopedia type of picture book of butterflies, and before my son was two years old, he knew all their scientific names.
Amazing. I'd really wish to lay my hands on that book

All jokes aside, on second watching: This is by far the most informative and helpful motivational media I have ever encountered of any description over the past 50 years. Including books.
this says something!
Have you ever try J.G.Bennett, Maurice Nicoll, Ouspensky and Gurdjieff? Those guys were talking about this and much more....more than 100 years ago....
Just pressed play. Now im excited to listen!
I have stopped and took notes and over. Great episode!
@@rickholzer708 That's where this guy got his information from. It's just regurgitated info for his own benefit. I guess he thinks everyone forgot the great men you mentioned.
My brain 🧠 loves interviews like this first thing in the am. I listen to these when I'm in the shower and on the way to work. I watch both of these guys every week. I just LOVE Dr. Huberman and geek right out listening to his whole show and writing down notes like a mad woman.
*Every family has a person who breaks the chain of poverty. I hope you will be that person!*
Beccause of your comment I'm downloading this to watch later! Great outlook!
Thank you very much!
Many have 9 poor members of family and become the tenth trying to pull the other 9 out of poverty. So, try to be strong enough to break that chain first. Otherwise, we all drown together...
Hahaha...bums
Thank you.
I don't know who Needs to Hear This but " Greatness is often built when no one is watching ". So don't give up and keep going
What do you mean you don’t know who needs who needs to hear this. Did you listen all the way through? So many topics. Understanding how to manage internal stress. Don’t you ever feel like your heart is racing too fast? Tools to steady heart. The new insights on the limbic system and neurons and stress threshold are fascinating. I’ve been involved in training thinking cognitive behavior for over 35 years is great information.
@@lindabloom5158 I think He’s talking about his own quote needing to be heard “greatness being when no one is looking!”
Thank you, kind stranger! Same to you
Very well said. Thank you

In my yoga training we were told that it's essentially about the nervous system. Yoga heals the whole body but the main wiring is the nervous system it's the electrics right. And through breath and movement we can gain conscious control over it. It's mind body and spirit when practiced consistently. And if someone who's been chronically stressed for years like victims of abuse etc I can testify that pranayama is the most effective way to heal the body. If you go and do a one to one breath work session it's like doing ten years of therapy and it makes you look ten years younger. It rocks!!!

I will admit I honestly developed severe depression and anxiety, and isolated myself from others. The only reason I got better was forcing myself to exercise. Started running a mile everyday and lifting at the local gym, after a few weeks I began feeling better and 6 months later my issues dimished completely to the point where I was able to get back to normal living. Tackle one thing at a time, do the things you least want to do, and sweat out the stress and negativity. You’ll be a lot healthier and feel a lot better trust me
34:29 - This makes SO much sense in regards to:
•Studies on motorcyclists show, when an accident happens as a result of a 3rd party or something out of the rider's control, they usually never ride again. •However when the rider feels they had some degree of control in, or cause of the accident, they typically continue to ride for years or for life.
FASCINATING.
I've been a yoga teacher for 30 years and have taught all types of "prana yama" basically breath work... and I always teach more ecstatic fuller inhale s to get the energy way up and slower longer exhales to calm the energy way down. he's right on in many aspects... and Wim Hoff will take you to places you need to go, but have resisted. I can now hold my breath out for 3 minutes effortlessly... I love your show Lewis!
I was thinking that what he was doing was "prana yarna" too! Part of Ayurvedic medicine done centuries ago in India.
done- "we're not just telling stories we're changing lives" and "whatever you believe you can achieve" those 2 sentences will always be on my mind
Wether you believe you can or you believe you can’t, you are correct.
hello, as I was listening to your podcast, I realised that we actually do the slow down heart rate inconsciously most of the time. For instance, I practice swimming at a competitive level and I do use the exhale longer action to slow down my heart beatings after a series of very fast laps. I love the way things are explained in these podcasts because it helps us understand how the brain works. Being French, and english being my second language, I find it very easy to graps all the concepts, so thank you very much.
I found you today.. I have watched three videos liked each one.. the thing I wanna say the most is thank you, doing this I found more answers and self confidence in these few hours than I have I think my whole life.. at 38 I am realizing how afraid and paralyzed I have been thank you so much for breaking it down in a way I can understand

*To 1% of you reading this. I hope you get rich or reach your full life potential whatever lifestyle you live in.* And you'll be the first millionaire your family 😉
I wish my 16yr old self knew this stuff back in 1984! I suffered anxiety disorder and panic attacks (for 14 long yrs- totally sober) when it wasn't "common"! My mind knew I had no imminent danger, but every fiber of my being was screaming, 'you're going to die'!!!
I could wake up that way. No rhyme or reason for them. It hit my brain first and it was all downhill from there.
I'm 22 and that's me right now .. at first it was the fear that was pounded into our heads as kids reglious beliefs about someone coming out of the sky and if you're not ready you go to hell and how much we are born into sin and basically destined for doom unless you accept this man to save you from your self I suppose .. a few months back I would wake up with almost what feels like a heart attack thinking that this may be the day or night the sky cracks open and all doom unleashes .. I was so stressed and fearful all the time .. fast forward now in my spiritual journey I'm not so agitated about that anymore but there's still an underlying issue about me dying .. it's always there ... especially now ... I've been having chest and breathing problems for like 2 months went to the hospital did an xray and they said it was fine but I knew what I was feeling so it didn't make sense ..constantly the thought is there .. telling me I'm sick in some way and going to die " I acknowledge the thought yet can't stop or control it .. I do believe though that further in my spiritual journey I will get there! I'm learning so much and try my best to apply the knowledge I have sooo much self improvement to work on .. wish you all the best.. ❤
@@letstalkaboutit7983 I'm sorry you had a bad experience in believing in the saving Love of Jesus Christ! It's Love that saves from sin. It's the enemy of our souls who wants to destroy and feed you "the lie" this realm is a choice, and Christ chose to suffer and die for you, so you can be free!! It's a gift. And there is a sure pattern to this human existence. 7 fold pattern actually and prophecy will be fulfilled, whether you believe or not.
Look around. . .this world isn't going to sustain much longer. Death is the beginning of life in reality. Our souls live on somewhere. The beauty of Love and freewill is, You Choose!! I pray you find peace and joy and Love❤🔥✝️🙏
Only One Way. . .sweet soul
@@letstalkaboutit7983 you just need someone to reassure you you’re not going to die. Everything is ok.
I suffered from panic attacks for years. If only I had someone there to look in my eyes and calmly say “you’re going to be ok, nothing is wrong” and just “breathe”. Hugs are nice too while panicking, but at that time people just looked at me weird saying “what’s wrong with you” or “just stop worrying” or “stop freaking out”.
Now you know also the breathing technique this guy talks about too ❤️
I believe some parents/churches don’t know how to teach children about God. Instead of coming from a place of love and talking about grace and forgiveness they talk about fear/hell/devil.
They skip over the signs we all are given before Jesus returns.
Sorry you were told to fear him instead of a more positive way of going about it.
God is just our father. Just like any father, he wants us to behave ( house rules) and have a relationship with him.
He forgives us when we mess up and knows that we will all screw up from time to time. Lol
Dad just wants the best for us.
Take care❤️
I could listen to Dr Huberman all day!
Absolutely love learning about the brain and how to master the mind (and body via the nervous system) through breathing 💗

The 2 stresses that you talk about early in the show should be called: Triggered stress, and Depressive stress.
Thank you both for sharing this. Lewis - I loved all your questions and how it lead to so much valuable content shared by Andrew on how we can mechanically change the way we feel. SO GOOD!
I got this !
I go nonstop and very seldom become unmotivated.
Sometimes a critical person comes along and insults my efforts in a passively aggressive way. We all know these people !
I have mental tricks to recover after these mental attacks and always get back on track !
Life is such a gift , I can't wait for the next day and all the small accomplishments along the way !
Great episode Lewis! Andrew has a lot of wisdom, it is refreshing to hear a scientist's view on law of attraction as sometimes I think some people go to extreme in 'wishing' for things to happen without putting in any effort. They ultimately keep dreaming and seldom achieve their goals.
Omg! This blew my mind!🤯 Learned so much! Please have him on again!

I have experienced a great deal of varied and extreme traumas. There is no one thing you can do to recover, but many different things and it’s not a one size fits all. However, the most important thing to do is to find both acceptance and compassion for the self. From there you can add many methods inc nutrition, meditation, yoga, exercise, supplements, osteopathy, comedy, talking, human support, dancing and the list goes on. But start with compassion for the self! ❤️🙏

When does a joke become a dad’s joke - when the punch line is apparent. Thank you for your amazing interviews Lewis! Please bring Adrian again.
Here's my definition/requirements for a 'Dad Joke':
1)no sexual messages contained within or even implied
2)the language is understandable to people with a limited vocabulary (so it doesn't have to be defined/explained)
3)it can be told in front of any gender (biological or identified) by a person of any age
Basically a simple joke that doesn't offend anyone that hears it or overhears it. It should not make people blush or cringe or make them uncomfortable in present company. It should only make them laugh or, perhaps groan, after the punchline. Jokes with puns and animal jokes are usually the safest.
Peace!🙂

I love this segment. I discovered I have a low functioning DRD2 so my Dopamine production is low. It allowed me to discover this has been the reason no Dr was able to find the source of my life long migraines. I was getting the whole oh it's all in your head or chalked up to stress after numerous negative mris and CT scans. Because I suffer from chronic Pain and numerous medical conditions I was wrongfully given SSRIs when my Seratonin was ok resulting in Seratonin Syndrome. Thanks to a great psych who listened and looked at my Pharmacogenetics test he agreed to give me a med I was being refused over and over. I have never felt more like myself. This is an example how a demonized med can actually help people live a good life. I am on 2 controlled substances I have zero addiction to but depend on to live. Ide be bedridden. Dependency doesn't equate addiction. Sometimes no matter how healthy you live some people do benefit from unconventional methods of done correctly and responsibly. I also very much experience all range of emotion and feeling. I am forever grateful to my Dr who listened and used actual science
I've wondered this same thing about myself. What medication are you on?
Breath work or knowing how to breath has always been an important skill to know. Having a martial arts background I was introduced to how to control the breath and focusing it correctly. This is a great podcast and explains in more detail the affects of breath and how to use it.
Thanks enjoy the rest of your day
Thank you, always love your content Lewis. So valuable
Next podcast with Dr Huberman can you please ask him how neurochemicals impact brainwaves ❤️
Can listen to this man all day long. Thank you for bringing science to everyone 💞
This is my first time watching your yt channel; discovered by searching a random topic. ~ I’m only 30 mins in and this video is a potential life changer for me. Thank you! I’m one who gets overwhelmed and my energy slumps and it is very difficult for me to think my way into motivation. Putting the INhale-emphasis breath work to daily practice will really help me. I am also so appreciative to learn the physiological mechanics with his explanations. So happy, subscribed.
Synchronicity at its best! I starrted to learn & practice pranayama and feel how i makes you feel... and stumbled upon this video!
