- Recently, Collider got to help celebrate the 15th anniversary of Constantine by hosting a Comic-Con@Home panel with star Keanu Reeves, director Francis Lawrence, and producer Akiva Goldsman. During the hour-long discussion, a number of different topics about the occult horror comic book film were discussed, including how it managed to receive an R rating despite not really featuring the kind of gore, nudity, and language that usually provokes one.
Lawrence revealed that the production had deliberately set out to make Constantine a PG-13 movie from the very beginning, and were surprised to learn they’d been given an R. He then went on to explain the MPAA’s reasoning behind their decision, which was, for lack of a better word, very dumb.

MPAA is a joke
Constantine is the hero we need rn. Catholic, smoker, and unapologetic. “First come, first served”
Constantine without a R-Rated wouldn’t have worked..... Constantine specially Keanu Reeves playing him has to be R-RATED.
That's why you don't make pg rated flicks. Kids don't buy tickets
I cant waitttttttttt
Well I loved it
For tone? Well reportedly The Exorcist had audiences vomiting in the aisles so I guess starting out with that possessed little girl rattled some nerves. I wouldn't show that film to a 13 year old though.
I wonder if they ever intentionally give movies on the borderline the higher rating in an attempt to have the producers grease their pockets.
I had no idea this was Rated R
This film would have totally worked with an R. You could be able to go all the way with whatever you wanted.
You bag Keanu Reeves and he doesn't say anything.
Collider in a nutshell.
It did have that creepy off putting beginning
Spawn didnt get an R-Rating. Too bad it didn't have more demons in it.
wow, you're right. I think Spawn made their demons cartoony helped the PG-13.
there was even a r rated supernatural season;) and its mostly fun
