Prayer has become something people mock. When someone says I’ll pray for you, its almost treated as a laughable eye roll worthy statement; but its such a gracious thing to have someone devote time, energy and attention to you in so that your life may improve in some manner. Its a gracious act that we are flippantly tossing aside.
I think part of it might just be the manner in which people say it. It can very often come across as strikingly insincere as well as self-righteous and condescending. If a close friend or family member says they'll pray for you then it's meaningful and appreciated, like a devout grandparent or something.
But too often, "I'll pray for you" when coming from a stranger or acquaintance comes off as very patronizing and inauthentic, less a genuine thing they'll actually do and more of a way to express judgemental moral superiority by placing themselves on a spiritual pedestal of holy righteousness that's favored by God, unlike the lowly sinner being "prayed for."
@@jagpro91 I see what you’re saying. It has been used in that manner. I’m thinking more of instances where a tragedy occurs, people say they will pray for those affected, and then atheists come along and mock them. We are replacing it with “we’ll keep you in our thoughts”, but thats a shallow version of a prayer. It doesn’t entail near the same level of action and emphasis that a prayer does.
@@06rtm Yeah, that's true, I think the people saying they'll pray for victims after a tragedy are generally being sincere and genuinely want to help and the atheists are the ones being the assholes in that scenario. It's all about the context and the intent of the person, it can be a sincere gesture of compassion or it can be an insincere and self-righteous bludgeon of snide condescension and moral superiority. Rejecting it out of hand regardless of context is unnecessarily dismissive and dickish though, not to mention unhelpful.
I think part of the resentment towards the idea is from Facebook. Everyone see's a tragedy happen to someone, then that person just see's a wall of text on a screen of people saying "prayers!" And they don't feel the genuine fellowship..
Well "thoughts and prayers" has been mocked by the media, and so the militant agnostics do the same. However, I hear from anti-Christ family and friends "sending energy!" or "Sending good vibes your way!" "positivity coming your way!" - this is still prayer, its just been morphed and deformed to conform to the world and remove Christ.

Seek FIRST the Kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you....
Puts everything in life into proper perspective. My struggle is fully grasping how to actually do that in a practical day to day manner, I suppose.
@@Tyler_W It's a struggle everyone shares, in a way or another. Faith also requires you to put effort into a practice you might not immediately recognise as beneficial, but which ultimately results in you unconsciously following the higher goal, to move on a journey to be the best version of yourself. There's a discipline to be gained through prayer and ritual which has practical effects. Faith lived gracefully transforms you, it leads you to some inner balance, inner peace, as some would say, it helps you in your day to day struggle like nothing else can.
Doing so just rationally, without practicing a religion, can possibly bring some benefits, but it doesn't open yourself to noticing why it does so, and the answer to that "why?" is the foundation of a deeper understanding of yourself and the world. In a sense, through the practice of prayer you can appreciate the world more than you would be without it.
I really only prayed once in my life. I mean REALLY prayed. It was for someone else. I meant it. I felt it. And....it was answered.
“This is the way the world is set aright.” Thank you, Jonathan, for saying. Thank you, Father God for making the way.
His anecdote about his son reminding him to pray reminded me of the cute country song, “I’ve Been Watchin’ You.”
Our prayers let God know the judgements of our heart, and intentions of our highest will.
If you don't believe in God, then a prayer is the linguistic code and direction from your heart to your mind, to get all your faculties in alignment for the execution of your highest will.
Praise God. Thank you for speaking about these truths. Keep spreading the Good Word.
Thank you, JP.
Current Neuroscience has already proven benefits from prayer and meditation for theists and atheists alike, so I say do it!
So prayer is 'right' attention. This gives you an excellent perspective to engender humility from which we can derive gratitude. Prayer is enabling a 3rd person perspective in the world by changing our cognitive grammar much like John Vervaeke advocates in some of his practices.
@Isaac Jared Praying to God means that you acknowledge something outside of yourself. You are engaged in dialog and perhaps even something like the dialogos that John Vervaeke talks about. Anytime you are seeking help outside yourself you engender an additional perspective. Having a conversation with that perspective, or really just any relationship, is that 3rd person view. There are some assumptions in there, it isn't just 'pray' as proper prayer requires that humility, which is the major hurdle for most moderns.
Excellent sujet! Tu devrais faire un épisode complet sur la gratitude. C’est tellement une clefs importante.

Luke 11:1-4 KJVS
[1] And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. [2] And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. [3] Give us day by day our daily bread. [4] And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.
Really glad the clips exist.
Sometimes "I'll pray for you" seems a hell of a lot like, "I'll pay the charity to take care of you. I don't want to do it myself." and fair enough depending on the situation.... There is a huge difference between asking your father for something and he hand waves and says, "I'll pray for you" - never changing..... and a random person on the street asking you for things. I have an Orthodox Jewish mindset (according to my mensch) where prayer changes the person praying. Still seems like an excuse to hear a family member, friend, or community leader to say, "oh that problem??? [could do something about it] I'll pray for you". Or even, "You just told me that you desire to molest your children. I'll pray for you"....... I do see it both ways.
It's either extremely coincidental or some kind of divine synchronicity that I heard this exactly when I did, and given what's been going on in my life in the last couple days, the kind of small epiphanies I think I've been having, I'm thinking I should pay attention and take note. I really needed to hear everything in this video. I don't know that I fully understand it, but I want to listen, and I want to thank you for how God seems to be using you in my life.
The divine algorithm 🙂
God bless you, Tyler.
Thank you. I needed that reframing.
This is a good man that JPag is talking to.
I don't believe but I pray
Great vid, thanks. Was wondering if you had an excerpt of jonothan discussing the symbolism of the right and left hand?
Has been done before, good luck finding though
@@spacemule1 cheers dude!
What is prayer? Hhh, I've been asking this question since I was first walked into a church at the age of 8. Hope this video is good.
Great video
Which prayer books?
So prayer is another word for pondering, focusing, contemplating, concentrating and meditating. If this is what prayer was all about, there would be no controversy over the need for prayer. But if we need to pray, in order to meet the expectation of an anthropomorphic God ………now we have controversy. It really is that simple.
A to do list is a prayer
if you direct it to God
A to do list is a stripped down version of prayer. It doesn’t have the spiritual meat on its bones.
A relationship with God is not method, it is not something that you do because it works for you. It is not because that is the way we were designed and supposed to be. It is not to make your life what you think is better. It is about a true, meaningful actual relationship with the actual most High God, your friend, even He said if I don't know you i will say "away from me" . Pray books are "religious". Use you own words. Talk to Him. He wants to be your true friend using your words.
Yes, but an atheist is never going to understand that. For them to enter the church they first need to hear these things in a deconstructed manner that makes sense in a kind of scientific description.
That's a top-down metaphysical perspective rather than a bottom-up psychological/scientific one. Non-religious people can be reached by connecting to them through the latter, which puts them one step closer to recognizing the importance of the latter joining the former in the consciousness of the human person.
@@06rtm That could be a method but it is God that draws us to Him through a meaningful relationship. He loved us first.
@@metaspacecrownedbytime4579 I agree, but atheists will not understand that. They have to started at the bottom and work their way up.
@@06rtm I disagree I believe truth cuts through all things. I also used to use secularized speech to try and logic trap non believers but a lot of times if it failed I’d later think I may have just led them further astray
*IF? You do Not* *Believe how can you* *pray to the living* *God,? You "Might"be* *praying to An ldol* *(Ba'al) that can Not* *Hear, See or answer,* *your petition !*
yes... what if you got some sort of answer... or make some sort of unholy alliance that you aren't even aware of? Could a person get a mental illness or something through misdirected prayer?
If you pray that the Father YHVH will reveal too you his Salvation Y'shuah aka
Jesus the Christ and believe in your heart God raised him from death you will Not need to worry about praying to a false god
Or Satan...Faith in the Almighty God Creator
Is the first step of Salvation...
Prayer to God engenders faith. Aimless utterance into the universe isn't what's being recommended. Pray to God. Even if you don't believe, simply taking that first step is a small act of faith that, if taken sincerely, will inevitably be rewarded with greater faith and understanding. Think of it as planting a seed. As long as you have enough faith to start praying, to plant the seed, and you continue to water it, I think it will grow and produce life regardless of how much you did or didn't believe at the start.
You're right. People can sense. I can see porn addiction on someone's face.
no you cant. Not only are you judgmental but most likely wrong in your judgment. I wonder if that might be a projection on your part
In some cases, yes you can. Remember to study your own face. Look close, it's your face, take as much time as needed.
I started to pray for a GF because she wanted a husband, but it seems she wanted me, so I stopped
You pray even if you don't beleive in God. That does not make sense. Who are are you talking to? The universe or something? What is prayer? A check list of what you want? What if you spoke to your partner like that. GOD IS YOUR FRIEND.Treat Him like you want to be His friend.
You sound new to this channel. No offense of course. I recommend lurking his main channel. It will help you develop your conception of God to something beyond just a guy who lives in another dimension. The reason I responded is because when I first became a christian I thought of God in the same way you do now but now its totally changed so I understand your sentiment.
Everyone prays all the time. A to do list is a prayer.
Pray means ask. You are asking the highest for something. If someone says “the universe” in place of God, thats fine. Its better they say that to justify their secular spirituality than be completely atheist. Once you point out that the universe isn’t conscious, that they are simply replacing the traditional term of God with something they find more palatable, than it opens a door for them to re-enter the church. Don’t condemn them, just realize they are confused in a chaotic time.
@@ownagesniper1 the danger is the suspicion or belief that if you don't direct your communication to God, another spirit could hijack the communication. You know how in tales you have to invite the vampire in? well why would you send an invitation into your mind and soul to whoever might be listening? It seems like good sense to be cautious
@@ownagesniper1 This is like AA creating a "god" out of a doorknob or people - they fall into "pink cloud" prelest, delusion, and many of them commit suicide - because they think they can find "god" without Christ. There lives always fall apart later.
