    Hello 👋 fraimly. Happy Monday. I put cardboard down first then I put a bunch of old dead logs or limbs. Then I add my soil. It will fill in around the logs or limbs plus they will absorb and hold water,so I don't have to water as much. Much love to y'all 👍👊💜🇺🇲🙏

    I follow another homesteader they got a dump truck load last fall, filled their raised gardens then let them set over the winter, found out after they planted this year that it take time for it to break down more to provide nutrients and almost lost their crop this spring because there was not enough nutrients in it. they amended it a lot, saved their crop and should be good for next year with very little amendments.

    Yes sir, the older you get it’s easier to garden using raised garden beds. Getting up off the ground isn’t as easy as it used to be. LOL!!!
    A couple of years ago, I grabbed an old abandoned trough that had been used to feed our horses, the trough had rusted out at the bottom, brought it home, filled it with broken limbs from our pecan trees with cardboard at the bottom, filled it with dirt and it’s worked pretty good, I’ve used it for herbs and flowers. I’ve been looking for a new another one, and with your coupon, I got a good deal, and free shipping which is great. Your kids sure have grown. God Bless.

    Mike and Lacey...the raised beds look wonderful just be sure to realize as Living Traditions Homestead found out definitely need to add amendments to new compost as the plants can only use 25% of present nutrients for the first year and 25% more each year...their plants were turning yellow and that is what Sarah found out.

    Nice job. Only thing I can say is take advantage of hugelkulture and fill those beds w fallen wood etc to be able to fill w less.material. You're not lacking fallen wood there. also you won't be able to plant in that hot compost for quite a while I don't think. If that's rosemary it will need much more room. they going to cook in that hot compost? ❤your videos.

    Mica mentioned that the compose is hot; it might be still composting. If it is it might need to sit awhile. I found, as did the super nice people at "Living Traditions Homestead" that their compost filled beds lacked some nutrients. I put in some native soil which added not only earthworms and ground beetles but also micro-fungi which is needed for the roots of plants so they can absorb the nutrients I added. Hopefully this is helpful. Beautiful raised bed.

    The growth of both garden plants and weeds, the new blackberry shoots all over the rest of my garden, weird super rapid growth on m y tomatoes and zukes, convinces me we are going to be in store for a wicked winter. The increase in insects reaffirms my suspicions in my mind. Then there are the animals, a hen turkey crossed my path with easily a dozen chicks already capable of short flight, a doe with three fawns , many raccoon babies and a plague of field mice. The infamous 'winter of discontent '

    I don’t have much luck growing in straight compost. My plants do better when I mix the compost half and half with native soil. Also, if that compost touches any metal in your truck you want to make sure to sweep it all out and wash it off. It can eat through the metal. Looks like you have plastic lining in your truck so it is probably not a problem.
    Raised beds are much easier to weed unless it gets overwhelmed with weeds and you need to use tools to rip them out.
    Excited to watch as you make progress on your homestead

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  Месяц назад +1

      You will read that some block leech chemicals out of them into the soil. I don't think it is a huge concern and I haven't seen a lot of research on it either. It is more like you "hear" that block leech things into the soil. We wanted to offer people a different option than block if they had that concern. We have been using block for the edges of our raised beds for years and haven't seen any harm.

    • @sunshine6729
      @sunshine6729 Месяц назад

      @@MikeTheFitFarmer Thank you, to me it makes sense. Block like anything else erodes over time and would leach into the ground. I’m slowly moving away from traditional methods and moving towards the raised beds. Getting older, lol.

    @simoneconsciousobserver3105 Месяц назад

    I need to make raised beds if I intend on growing more than a few herbs and flowers. I am disabled and this year I am more aware of my limits.
    I really like the raised bed Mike set up. I did not know that cinder block isn't a good material for raised beds.
    It was a disappointment initially. I am in Guatemala. Cinder blocks are affordable and abundant. But so is corrugated metal and plastic. I am grateful that Mike shared this just in time for me.
    The added expense shipping, especially tarifs, prohibits me from just ordering myself a couple.
    I am a big fan of several homesteaders sharing their experiences. Making and fixing things with what they have. I am confident that I will be able to reconfigure my original plans and create a sturdy and esthetically pleasing raised beds using more appropriate materials.
    Is it ok to make a bottom layer of larges stones and logs so I don't need as much soil/compost? I have seen folks do that but I don't know the pros and cons.

    • @MikeTheFitFarmer
      @MikeTheFitFarmer  Месяц назад

      Yes you can definitely use some stones and logs in the bottom. The stones will allow for drainage and the logs/branches will decompose over time adding to your soil. Your soil will probably settle and you will need to add more soil to the top but that wouldn't be hard.
      If block is what you have and it is easy to acquire then I would use it. I still haven't seen definitive proof that block are bad to use and we have them all over our property. It isn't something I will lose any sleep over so do whatever is easiest for you.

    Yeah, but the bad thing about having to buy in bulk like that is it is probably full of broad leaf killer and you just screwed yourself over. Ask me how we know😢. Unfortunately, unless you can make enough of your own compost or can source from a trusted organic compost source, you have the choice of cheaper bulk or higher out of pocket for bags of organic.
