Love how you showed your mapped journeys. It’s so much easier for a US yankee to know where you are and where you’ve been. Thank you! I want so badly to do what you’re doing and is fantastic you share it.

Living here in the colonies, we have recyclable plastic containers for most of the products we buy. We also have separate trash and recycle bin for the waste company to pick up each week. I understand that not all of the service points have the recycle bins available. I do use reusable cloth totes and avoid the plastic shopping bags. Enjoy watching your vlogs.

    Rich and Fran
It's a great idea to have mini VLOG's about what daily life is like on the boat. I found it interesting to see how difficult it is to be plastic free in today's market. I've seen you two recycle your plastics and it can be assumed you will continue to do so. I truly admire the two of you for your passion about the environment! My suggestion would be try your best to buy plastic free and recycle the plastics you encounter. There is absolutely nothing wrong with being Vegetarian period! It has been proven that Vegetarians live longer healthier lives, good on you both.

Hello! I have lurked in the background, enjoying every video from the beginning. I've just moved back to the U.S. (and reliable Internet) after living in Mexico for 3 years visiting all the monumental architecture. What an adventure. Now, at 70, life and adventures need to be easier. If I were in Britain, I would have to give the narrowboat lifestyle a go. Your VLOG is just a joy to watch and I thank you so much for giving me a window into your lovely, scenic world. I have tried to use as little plastic as possible as well and find it a constant uphill battle. I love, love, love your weaving. Fran!

Keep up the good work you two. My wife will take the plastic off any goods that have them on and then stick it the shops bins for them to worry about, we put the produce in a thick reusable bag that we have over here. It makes our bins less full and that means less trips to the bigger bins that we have outside our block of flats here in Finland. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Isn't it all about making an effort? If we all make a small effort to avoid plastic packaging retailers will get the message. If we fall just get up and move on again.

Ya might want to show us that again in future videos and let us know the area of the country that you are cruising. We are here in the USA, California to be exact, and know absolutely nothing about the places that you cruise.

I much prefer the map to google alternatives because there’s too much input to the brain. It’s a bit like preferring black and white to colour for photography and movies, the brain is somehow more relaxed or at least mine is! Good luck with your decision to go plastic free. I hate all forms of packaging even recyclable because there is still a big impact on resources and the environment. I know it’s not possible to live without packaging but the amount we currently use is unbelievable. This is where I go back to my youth and the “olden days”. For a family of 5 we had one steel bin and that also took our coal fire ash. Now I can fill a bag with packaging daily just for two of us if I’m not careful. There’s packaging inside packaging, like your coffee and often it’s twice the size of the product just to convince us we’re getting a good deal! If we just made it the correct size there would be an instant improvement to the amount of waste we create. And when it comes to cleaning products I can’t find anything that’s not in plastic with the tops designed to save lives. I’ll follow your plastic free journey with great interest but I think you will have to accept you will have to use some plastic but set yourself a limit on the amount. Maybe a small box or bag for plastic rubbish to make you more conscious when buying but not eliminating all together. Then the bags off your lentils and the top off your marmite can still go in. You do still need to live and this approach may be more achievable, otherwise you may just throw the towel in. If that makes sense! Thank god wine is in glass bottles. I did once think we should take all the waste back to the supermarket for them to dispose of when we did our next weeks shop, I bet they’d soon deal with the problem if they had to pay to sort it out. Anyway I’ll shut up now! Thanks as always for another great vlog.

I agree with you all . I live in the USA in Oklahoma. that should tell it all but you have no idea .this is the land of the throw it away. And if you want a bigger bug the waste of food is criminal. all about the sell by date, or best by date. we have people children etc starving and supermarkets throwing tons of perfectly good away because of the best or sell by date. PROFIT PROFIT PROFIT. As for the plastic free . best of luck, how ever ever thought about canning you said that you can visit Farmers markets. wouldn't that help on the in-between. Yes I would love to see what Fran can whip up in the kitchen. I'm a fan of bovril in the jar for drinks and cooking. It's hard to get over here but I occasionally stumble across it then it's all free change in get as much as I can. And one last thing I agree with you that the CRT should provide recycling points , however that's ironic as you know that the bin's will be plastic. win and lose.

I'm impressed! So much effort put in avoiding plastic. It's almost a Sisofys job. As you found out with the coffee. Packed in a nice recycleable carboardbox, containing the coffee - in a plastic bag. I'm kind of lazy, bying things as the are, but we do have garbage sorting in the area we live, so my garbage are sorted out in kategories.
I am watching numbers of narroboat vlogs and are a little tired of the format: "Sailed from here to there and tomorrow we are going from there to there through some numbers of locks". I feel your pain on the eliminating plastic. After jumping into the plastic free plan with enthusiasm, I had to cool my heels a bit, from 'eliminating' to 'reducing'. It's overwhelmingly everywhere! Thus far, the reusable shopping and produce bags are a success. Currently easing myself into plastic free food storage in the kitchen -- too easy to grab plastic wrap/bags/containers. If there is a plastic free alternative, I choose it. We have also just become vegetarians for the same reason and are trying to consume as little plastic as possible and encounter the same issues at the supermarket! I've been veggie since 1987 and vegan just beginning, officially, although I've never had milk in my home, but some cheese previously. My body loves it and as you said it helps the planet. I only use canvas shopping bags and in the u.s. there are more things in cans (coffee) or boxes (pasta, grains) than seems in u.k., so I don't have the plastic free problem, so much. Guess the shops nearest canals are just not eco friendly enough? Blessings! Been watching your blogs recently, starting at oldest one. Enjoying the journey! Q

I misspoke! When I went to purchase digestives, there IS a plastic sleeve inside the cardboard box, so it's still an issue. Although I do use cheese cloth or flour bags to hold loose veggies for shopping. That way they don't rattle around the canvas shopping bags! I have to look up hessian bags, sounds fibrous and fun!

Love your videos. Your attitude to life is brilliant and we cant wait to start our life on the canals next summer. Please keep posting and ignore any negative comments as these are vastly outnumbers by those of us who have really enjoyed watching you journey to date. One question if you have time, how are you going to deal with the winter lock closures? Will you just stop and go back to the cottage, stay in the same place or move back and forth along the same stretch of canal until they are open again? Thanks.

I used to live near the River Soar between Loughborough and Leicester. For most of the time it is OK, but it does flood after a very long period of heavy rain. However, it doesn't last for long and then you can move on again. It is all canalised with locks, so it's not difficult to navigate. There are the usual level warnings about whether you can proceed or not.

jean405 Doubtful, and most "biodegradable" plastics used in packaging only successfully biodegrade properly in commercial composting facilities, not in domestic compost or landfill, where in any case they will produce methane. Better to buy coffee beans in paper bags, or buy from a coffee shop where they will grind to order into paper bags.

Do you have stores that sell bulk supplies? The health food stores in the USA have bins to scoop how much of a product you want. Now the neighborhood groceries have a section of bulk items. Pastas, nuts, candies and chocolates, dried fruit and veggies and I don’t remember what. You fill plastic bags with what you want because that is what they provide. But you can take fabric bags in to fill and take. I seem to remember you saying you sew, but I could be mistaken. If you do not sew, get some cotton like jersey or quilting fat quarters (or old T-shirts that are stained or whatever) and cut 14 inch squares. Sew 3 sides then get rubber bands to close them when filled. I think all grocery stores where I live have coffee grounders that allow you to pick the coffee you want, grind it and they have paper bags (thicker than brown paper bags) to put your ground coffee in. You could also consider using some of the coffee bags for the bulk items but since this is an environmental choice, why kill the trees? The cloth bags can be used for many many years. Glass bottles that are tinted (like the blue mason jars) are wonderful home storage solutions. Regular clear glass jars in a cupboard are also good. The bright sunlight and extreme heat will cause food to go stale quickly so dark colored glass or clear glass in a cupboard will ensure your dry food lasts longer. Don’t be discouraged! This makes everything different but it is not impossible. Local food markets will be great food sources. Health food stores, bulk groceries are all good sources to avoid the outrageous packaging. You will discover where the things you typically shop for are most affordable and accessible and you will carry your own beads. Since you don’t have a car, carry an empty backpack to put your food in when heading back home. I am going to peek around to see what I may find in London and that might lead you to ‘related’ stores where you will be. Good luck 👍🏻! I think this is brilliant !

Whole Foods has 7 stores in the uk. This link www.wholefoodsmarket.co.uk/ is the list of stores, their location, hours of operation and phone number. They even deliver in the London area. This article ( www.theguardian.com/money/blog/2012/oct/17/bulk-buying-food-most-money ) suggested that the bulk grocery items are not yet readily available in the uk but they offer advice on how and where to buy bulk foods and minimize packaging. So this will be very useful. The article says you can save 219% on your foods by buying bulk. 219% of what, I don’t know. But he/she may have checked multiple items and compared bulk prices to regular packaged or tracked a handful of shoppers who changed their eating and buying habits. Will leave you to check and I hope that this response was helpful and not a pain in the arse.

Sometimes I think it's a little to easy to forget, or overlook the use of plastics, or non natural products with the danger of becoming over zealous. It is especially easy to overlook the manufacturing process. I often wonder if in the manufacturing of solar panels more carbon is produced than they can ever save over their useful lives. I know where I live there is now a big issue about the deposal of solar panels that have come to the end of their lives and the waste now sitting on peoples roofs. Just watching this video and looking specifically for plastic products and I think Fran's glasses frames are made from plastic, almost certainly the lenses will be plastic, or plastic coated. The burning of a wood fire coverts stored carbon into carbon gas. I suspect the water pipes on the boat are plastic, the pumps used will have some plastic in them, the plugs on the electrical appliances will be plastic. But I guess at the end of the day it's about minimizing as opposed to excluding and recycling these type of products. I know a few pubs near me now only offer carboard straws, not plastic. Another eg would be people who are cage free when it comes to eggs and pork, until they go out for breakfast and don't ask where the eatery sources their ingredients from.

The plastic free living....is just starting over here...Every thing is triple wrapped....now. there is a tax on plastic bags - they call it - mai baagu - so you have to have your own bag whenever you go into a convenience store or supermarket. Why don't we just use paper bags? We could not believe how much gunk was in the canals around London. My better half bought me a carton of my favourite drink - shirokimijima,,,,a brand of shouchuu - made from sweet potato To open the box, there was plastic, un-burnable plastic and paper...Just doest make sense?? I am with you Fran!! I will send you a photograph of the coastline where I live one day - when I can work it out,,,,However, the North Koreans send out barges filled with plastic rubbish...And because of the tides, it ends up on Japanese beaches. TheSoupdragon1968 most plastics are recyclable. The problem is that very few are widely recyclable, and often facilities don't exist for collection / disposal of the various types. Mixed plastics in particular are a nightmare to recycle. Hence many councils only accept plastic bottles and tubs. In addition, the U.K. Lacks processing capacity, and much plastic collected for recycling is currently being stored in vast heals awaiting somewhere to be built to cope with it. The only responsible solution is to avoid plastic as far as possible, and recycle whatever you can that is left.

  • @justinehayward2553
    @justinehayward2553 5 лет назад

Without a doubt, plastic is a problem. Whilst I admire your desire to change your habits, I also realise the difficulties faced by the consumer and therefore, for the time being, have concluded that even a slight cut back of packaging by 'the many' is a huge step in the right direction. Practicality and discretion are important variables here- no Marmite?!!!
I myself try to live a greener life. Fortunately I am no fan of processed food, have 99% given up on commercial fast food. Yet, I am aware of this forced conversion by some of the vegan community and the inevitable and often pugnacious backlash against it (see some comments below). I eat mostly primary foods which includes quality fish and meat, meat only on occasions- I made a great beef wellington this weekend.
My problem is the packaging that most things come in, for example, tossed and washed salads come in a plastic box inside a plastic wrapper, other foods on a plastic tray etc. My plastic consumption over the space of a week is horrendous and I can only hope my attempts to recycle it are not in vain.
I also agree with Richard, the meat industry is a problem on a very large scale- the fast food industry responsible for a huge proportion of this. Thus my attempts to eat only quality meat.
I am no 'hippy' or 'faux green dude', I've simply come to see the huge problem plastic and food consumption per se is having on our eco system and have decided to try and 'do my bit'; however, as I said previously we must be practical too. in other words, buy the marmite.
    Good luck.
