I love this rule change, now the winner breaks format will require players to earn their runs and not just break the same way and always have easy layouts.
Great video. Thanks Karl. I did around 200+ breaks this week to determine the best control from the break. I only had luck with the cue ball directly in the middle of the table, with a half-ball cut break using bottom left and as hard as possible. I consistently got a nice spread, cleared the 3-point rule and had a shot on the one ball. I only sometimes potted a ball, though. I like the idea of this break moving forward as it does not make it a guarantee, and your first few shots, if you do pot a ball on the break, usually are not easy.
They might have figured it out, maybe most of them.I saw about 4-5 similar break adjustments already. They're putting a little right spin, semi cut break and the 1 usually hits 1 rail under thhe side pocket and gets pocketed in the opposite side pocket.
oh lol. in my private practice i was always lining the nine up on the spot, and breaking from the edges of second and third diamonds like usual, on the right side. My go to was heavy left spin with a small amount of cut on the 1 which would always bring the 1 up or the five or six in their lower pockets while leaving the 2 generally close to where the nine is close to the dot. Could earn a cheekky combo or carom from time to time but it looks like theres less space to cue from than normal.
I've been playing with the "new break" all my life. 1ball at the front, 9ball on the spot and 2ball at the back... BUT without a break box, I break from the side.
hey Karl, have they thought about using old 9 ball rules (2 shot rollout)? That game is more interesting because it forces players to go for shots they normally wouldnt go for.
Is that "1 rail cut break with rail bridge" on EUROTOUR(9 on spot) , usually get 1-ball into the middle pocket, cannot be duplicated when bridge inside the box??
thank you for explaining all this in detail, it cleared things up for me lol I heard Jefferey De Luna made 9 balls on the break one time. Is that true? It is hard to believe but I guess possible.
I know Karl is a professional himself, but if you're struggling to not make a ball in the demonstration of the new "harder" break, don't you have to ask yourself if it's really doing anything? :D making the pockets smaller seems to do a much better job of making the game harder
Honestly I never get why they use the break box just let them break any where from behind the line also just let the referee decide if they prefer 9 ball on the spot or 1 on the spot
hi Karl! I can't figure out what's the break box size? The only thing I can find online takes me to a wiki page, showing the break box 2 diamonds wide. But that's bigger than I see on Matchroom. On Matchroom is definitely narrower than 2 diamonds, but doesn't look to be a "round number"... it's not 1 diamond, it's not 2 diamonds, what size is it? is it 1 and a half diamonds, is it 1 and 2 thirds? I really can't tell
make a straight line from left and right diamond to the break 'spot', you'll get triangle. and then mark where the line cross the 'kitchen' line (2 diamond as you already know). there you go, a break box
karl , if u break straight ,full speed , one of the two ball behind the nine , touch the rail and kick the 9 in the middle pocket or in the corner pocket.....that i learnd watching u one of your last mosconi cup, 🤣 , u hit at the time 3 or 4 golden break , have a nice evening
Lol. The 2013 Mosconi Cup used this same break and the Europeans absolutely torched the US at their own game (the break). They made the 1 ball in the side over and again with a shot on the one. While the Americans appeared to try everything including “the kitchen sink” but just refused to try to copy the same break the Euros were using. Really hard to watch. Probably the biggest loss in all MC’s ever.
It doesn't matter what the racking rules are. An 820+ Fargo will win the tournament. I bet, at the end, you will analyze the results and see that only a handful of player performed way above their established Fargo rating.
A welcome change, but the pockets are still far too big, youbcan hit the rail just past the middle pocket and still pot a ball in the corner. They should be the same size as snooker pockets.
@@danawhiteclips1633 in ratio I mean, hitting the rail mid way up the table and still pocketing is embarrassing. Almost impossible to miss. Probably why Davis, White and OSulllivan made Mosconi cup teams ahead of seasoned pool players.
Why couldn't we just use the old tried and true wood and plastic triangular racks? Change for the sake of change. There was nothing wrong with the old way. Oh, and while I'm busy bitching.... no shoot-outs!
Why not just make the break shot a called shot? What's the point of making it nearly impossible to make a ball on the break to make the break shot even more of a luck shot? Pool is supposed to be a game of skill. People put in 1000's of hours practicing breaking 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball etc. And if they get good at it... someone changes the rules for people who aren't good at it. Isn't there already enough luck in the break shot?
You, my silly man, are not a top seeded pro on the tour..Players like ShaneV. Boening will Practice maybe several Thousand breaks a week,,The Best pros will have that rack sorted out in a few days..The rule change is moot..Only the poorest players will struggle with the new break..In fact..I predict that More balls will be potted on the break AND the runouts from the snap will increase.
I Love how he shows that everyone can do it in showing the break being done by Emily :)
I love this rule change, now the winner breaks format will require players to earn their runs and not just break the same way and always have easy layouts.
Winner's break is dumb for short races, let's say under 20 racks
I hate winner break but if they are doing it then they should not be using a magic rack.

@@john_vin yep, I saw Pia Filler doing that.
That why SVB jayson Shaw and all other pros put a lot of time to work on the break it’s not easy to be a pro it takes a lot of dedication
Karl is brilliant for videos like these. Not the biggest 9 ball fan but this makes it a whole lot more interesting.
Watching the US open and didnt know the rule change - quick google and this very helpful vid popped up. Great stuff - thanx
Thanks for this. I was unaware of this change. This should be a decent equalizer.
We have been doing this for awhile already. What’s new?
Lets get back to playing with the proper set of ball
Colors! Then worry about the break!!!
Thank you 😊
I just love 9 ball its such a beautiful game.
Great explanation!
Thanks a lot Karl!
Great explanation. Thanks for the video!

very well explained! unfortunately i am missing the size of the breakbox! can you tell me how to mark the breakbox on the table! thanks in advance!
Actually in tournaments they make you break from the break box which is behind the kitchen but not everywhere in the kitchen area
Thanks Karl, did not know about this change being new to pool. So now there are no predictable balls in the pack, brilliant.
First frame I watched in this format went 20 minutes. Having frames like that is going to have me watching a lot more 9 ball. I love safety battles
I've been playing with the "new break" all my life. 1ball at the front, 9ball on the spot and 2ball at the back... BUT without a break box, I break from the side.

Will you be at the tournament ?
If they want to make it more difficult, make the area the white can be placed allot smaller or even just 1 spot.
No need to move the 1-9 balls
Is that "1 rail cut break with rail bridge" on EUROTOUR(9 on spot) , usually get 1-ball into the middle pocket, cannot be duplicated when bridge inside the box??
Will be harder to control the cue ball you say? SVB felt that in his bones😂
Bring this break rule back to the US open
thank you for explaining all this in detail, it cleared things up for me lol I heard Jefferey De Luna made 9 balls on the break one time. Is that true? It is hard to believe but I guess possible.
jeff made 6 balls on the break, it on internet
Karl looks like he got younger.
Still i miss the era when players breaks as hard as humanly possible like Djanggo Bustamante, Johny Archer, and prime Thorsten Hohmann.
The pros are going to have their work cut out for them at least this presents a challenge for the pros
Gonna be some ugly cut breaking with medium/low speed.
I bet SVB is practicing this break right now lol.
Great job Carl 😝
Karl
New break only for European Open or any matchroom billiard event?

Also noticed this new break is causing a lot of the players to scratch on the break are you sure you all should have changed the break?

Intriguing
yea but the 1 is setting up in back pocket

Jayson already found it aha
Will there be another change if all the pros are not making any balls at all ? 😅

Their balls are like 30% bigger, how could they use snooker pockets lmao

Someone will find a solution and they will all copycat. Just get rid of the magic rack, why does everything have to be 100% predictable?
WITB? 😉
Best solution would be to switch completely to 10 Ball.
All Tournaments Worldwide.

This didn't age well. Only ball SVB was pocketing consistently was the white...
