- In today's video, I will be showing you how to take your old maybe broken laptop and make it into an external monitor. This will be achieved using an LVDS controller board. These are incredibly cheap and can be used to make external portable monitors out of your old laptop screens. What is even better is the fact that you can buy them for extremely cheap online. If you manage to find a USB C controller board (these are more expensive0 You could even power it using a power bank!

when you didn't know what three colored aux was, I actually felt old
dude ... watching this makes me feel old ... we would have had to go to college for this knowledge
I'm 17 and I know what they are 😂
I know some 10 year olds who know what that is
I am 14 and i teach my parents about it
Might have to give this one a try, thanks for the video :)
I actually did this trick a few years back and didn't make a screen out mine, but used it to create a projector. I had to modify the control board a bit (no backlight, well not the one thst came with the screen at least), mess about with an enclosure (with cooling and strong enough light source), and mess about with lenses and mirrors. It turned out pretty good and worked nicely as a fun project to make a relatively inexpensive projector I didn't mind taking outdoors to have fun with friends.
That's actually insane. Ty my man
Imaging a thin triple monitor setup...
Honestly, that controller board would be cool for a retro games setup: VGA for Dreamcast, Component for Gamecube/Wii/PS2/etc, TV for NES/SNES, and HDMI for... Idk, a raspberry Pi for everything else
You seem like a good channel with potential hopefully you will blow up soon
Kiddo you have a future on broadcasting, truly. Thanks for that tip. I have some broken stuff I need to recycle and this is perfect. Keep doing such a good job! Those morons with the dislikes are just jealous.
All you need is more space to work on so your projects don´t fall into the ground.
Looking for a way to reuse what I might've put in the bin, and found a decent channel, I consider this a win
I was curious, other than being 30 or 40 pin, is your LDVS adaptor "screen part number specific"? I've also got a stack of old laptop screens and think it would be cool to set up 5 or 6 monitors. Or build one giant screen :O Great video btw
Thanks man I love this vid I made it and it works perfectly!
I need to try this. What audio recording software are you using?
red light *is yellow*
Mysticle: oh its green
I actually need another monitor, and I never thought of doing this. I have three dead laptops laying around and now I can have a triple monitor setup!
Awesome hack. I like to see more videos like these.
Could have shown us the inverter so we know what to look for..
Ikr
not even kidding, have watched every vid
im using my small tv from like 2007 as a 2nd monitor the color is terrible and im getting an upgrade for my current laptop 60hz to 144hz and dint wanna waste the old one this video is great im gonna go to home depot and make a wooden case for everything
Amazing, I was wondering if i could use my old portable dvd player for the same...is it possible?
what kind of power cable you use for the monitor? ... how many wats or volts??
4:48 how do you the what type and how much power ur screen needs? Like what’s the adapter that is needed
where did you get the power cable from? because this isnt a 25 dollar monitor if you have to buy a separate cable with a power brick
Is there any of these boards that will run the speakers you pull out of the laptop along with the monitor
could theses technology be used as a portable monitor for game consoles or does it not have proper hdmi thinking about taking apart an old laptop and turning it into a gaming station using a suitcase I no longer use
Quick question can the lvds control board work on the newer versions of macbook pro?
Hallo I have a question should the lvds board support my display model number or can I take any lvds board
whats the differnce between the controller boards, will some wrong one not work?
Doesn't the laptop the monitor came from have a control board you can use?
wow
im about try it
I have an acer all in one that my dad was gonna throw out. It wasnt powering on which that model it is very common. Soooo ima try to make it a portable screen like the hori game monitor.
How would I use it as a separate screen, or two, on my current laptop. Because my laptop with 2 full extra laptop screens would be amazing!
HDMI
Diy perks has a good video that shows how to build it
Great video. Funny how you jump from british to american. The 3 color input is composite. Component has 5 colors and is higher quality.
Hey so I know this is old and prob won't get a response but I have a 1920x1080 120hz laptop that died and I'm planning on doing this conversion. But one thing I'm not sure about is whether or not I can use any LVDS board that's compatible or does it have to be a special board for higher refresh rates and resolutions.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer
LoL, I watched this - accidentally at 1.5x speed, and it was hilarious !!!
One thing, imho, You should have showed what "an Inverter" was to also educate viewers.
But I loved it anyway !!!
How did you learn doing this? Trial and error, watching online tutorials, etc?
Yeah pretty much :D A lot of trial and error and a lot of broken equipment, trial and error is the best for learning ;)
@@TheMysticle Where do you get the old equipment like laptops from? Wanna start learning about reusing old electronics for diy projects but don't own any
You can get free monitors off the freebie ads like craigslist and nextdoor in your neighborhood every once in a while, but I do have an really old slow laptop with a nice monitor, although, my most recent crap laptop has a terrible ruined screen so can't use that. You can get really cheap mini pcs these days and I thought that would be nice to pair with an old monitor for a second computer that is a Win pc as I have a mac laptop now. I think the old laptop case would come in handy to hold the old screen. I do worry that my older laptop might not have the right connectors or power rating, though. Need to know more about that.
Very cool
4:36 which way round? with the contacts facing in or out?
Did you buy any controller board or did you need a model number of the screen?
Ik its been 7 months but you need the model number of the screen. Stay safe.
i have one with an inverter...will it work still?
Does this work with old MacBook pros
Why doesn't it work with an inverter
I wish he would explain
@@rashardwilkinson3333 they make control boards that come with an inverter to make that screen portable. just search the model number on the back of your particular display on eBay with "control board" after it and something should pull up. If you would like to make this portable check DIY PERKS here on RUclips and shows a really good tutorial on how to make one.
Does the controller board need to be specific to the display model or does a universal controller board would work
it has to be specific
Look up for ita model number on the back of it and type that in search
oh hai, wassup mysticle
Awesome. thanks. Wil this work with a 4k monitor from a HP® Spectre x360?. The main board died, and Its to expensive to fix it, and I Will love to repurpose the screen since I'm broke, and I need a monitor.
You would need to find the model number on the back of the monitor and then put that into google with the words "control board" next to it and there should be tons of options for that monitor
@@cristianluna5067 yup
can universal control board can match with all model ???
Man what's the problem if I have an inverter on my LCD display? Can I do something like you did or it's impossible?😂
What's bad about the screen having an invertor?
And what if the screen has an inverter attached to it?
And what does it look like?
Yo I have a broken tv with almost identical part can I just use that?
you need specific controler board for specific monitor
Cant believe You think that, your hair style is cool
Does the controller board need to be to be the correct one for certain laptop models?
Yes, you need to look for the screen model printed on the back of it and search that on amazon/ebay/etc
Thats hilarious calling auxiliary ports component am I that old im only 30. I use to have auxiliary ports for a monitor in my car to play ps2 way back in the day.
whats the problem with the inverter?
i looked into it a little. "A converter gets it’s incoming power from a theoretically endless supply; plugged in to an outlet or generator, while an inverter has a limited supply; the onboard battery bank, that must be monitored relatively closely to prevent depletion of the source." so what I'm guessing is you fry the monitor that uses an inverter because it's not built to handle the power from the outlet. An inverter changes the power from DC to AC, where as a converter changes it from AC to DC.
@@venialivelizard wrong
What’s a inverter?
i heard some where that there is a more simple way with software.. but the software costs 25$
haha
1:02 yes
If the screen was touch screen laptop would that feature still work?
No
It would with Samsung phone which have to have Dex function
Edit: and of course a controller with the touch support.
Now I can seriously make a real wallpaper - get it wallpaper?
Oh no... XD
Uh, how is this lighting up with no inverter?
For under $20 (minus a screwdriver kit, screws, and a monitor casing that fits your laptop screen size....)
Who the fuck doesnt have screwdirvers?
If you harvest from a laptop you can typically re-use the shell if it's not broken, then you only need a case for the controller.
That's about 3 dollars worth of scrap particle board or 3 dollars of plastic through a 3D printer at your local library it it happens to have one (unless you live in the UK, US or a third world country it's rather likely)
A 6 dollar screw driver set is something you should own for a variety of reasons.
You don't need a fancy set. Even my 15 year old nieces have saved more than 10x the value of the basic 6 dollar screwdriver sets that I bought for them.
“Aluminium” gang till I die!
Hardisk is need or not
The 360p sees all
i am literally have the same laptop i am reusing
odd finding this instead of vr
I have a old laptop that has windows 10 and it’s 10 yrs old
you kinda look like 2012 tomska
Mine has an inverter
you focus 90% of the time on your face and make a deep voice, not in the project. It makes difficult to follow
0:48 3
with all due respect, this is not a solution!! I can get a perfectly ok but old monitor with half of that cost and trouble of LVDS from online local stores.
Heeeeeeeeeeell ye
Waw
Nah I got a notification but for long, and by the way I go a oculus quest
Some voice.
Wait shit you Irish??
wtf is this guy ! sound weird act weird ...
