As much as I want to blame Disney or Chapek - some of the biggest problems are their "fans" who continue to sycophantically hand over their money for lesser experiences, not call out and defend every lazy, half-baked action taken by management - because of some long held loyalty to the Disney brand of their childhood, blinded by nostalgia as their pockets are being emptied. I find myself increasingly no longer looking to Disney (the supposed masters) for incredibly themed, immersive, innovative themed experiences - I'm looking to The Oriental Land Company and Universal Parks & Resorts.

I wouldnt call them theme park fans as whole, because this are not the people like us that visit theme parks as something they love, no matter if its disney, universal, the amazign european parks.... Is more the general public, the one that actually brings the big bucks and are a grand majority, the biggest problem. They dont give a fuck the place is not as good as it should be, or that imagineering is not creative anymore. They just love "disney movies" and are nostalgic by them, and maybe they feel "oh this is a little bit expensive" or something mildly negative in their visit. But at the same time they are on vacation and they dont want to ruin their positive feeling of something thats was expensive to visit, and they go out with a feel of this was great. Its the same people as Spain having Port Aventura be still its most popular theme park, becuase the general public dont know any better, for them what was good 20 years ago, its still good, even if its managed by a complete different company thats absolute crap and is killing the park year after year.
Thast why modern disney behave they way they do and are not afraid of universal, they are run by marketing departments that know how to suqeeze enough the general public and get away with it.
Its the exact same thing like in videogames with companies that sell millions upon millions of lesser games compared to others, full of bugs, bad graphics compared to the rest of the system they appeared, need to be fixed by modders... This is the same feeling of things like The Pokemon Company and Bethesda can get away with it. They are never gonna try to do anything better becuase, why would they do that, if the spend less and get more money thatn any other company around thats actually tries to do their best to compete.

I think the pandemic taught Disney that they can offer 60% of the pre-2020 experience, charge 100 or even 120%, and still hit capacity. Not to sound cynical, but why would they expand the depth and quality of their offerings when they’re so solidly at the top?

    • @elizabethgates7024
      @elizabethgates7024 2 года назад +7

They're, for sure, solidly at the top, but that doesn't mean Universal's growth shouldn't matter to them:
      2009: UO 10.16/Dis 47.5 (visitors in mils) = 22%
      2010 (after Hogsmede opened): U0 11.8/Dis 47.1 = 25%
      2019: UO 21.3/Dis 58.77 = 36%
These are pre-pandemic numbers, and we know from Chapek himself that attendance is lower than it was in 2019, meaning that Universal's percentage of Disney's attendance is likely higher. A third gate is definitely going to shift this number more.
While Disney's strategy may be lower guest numbers/more capita spending, this attendance shift can have more momentum than they want.

Half of IOA is already closed or broken with the exception of Marvel and HP because of their strict contracts. They can't staff the parks they have as it is and there are so many internal issues, being run by execs acting like wall street bankers in the 80's, that are only now starting to make their way outward. They should fire both Cheapbag and D'AmaGO and hire people who can increase short-term capacity for both rides and food.
How about leasing some 20 quality "carnival" flat rides (i.e put some into Dinosaurland) - plus having some 30 external food trucks across all US theme parks and charge them rent? If Disney would be honest about the reasons why they temporarily increasing capacity with flat rides, people would forgive Disney. Even Disney fanatics wouldn't mind when the crowds would use one or two flat rides per day if that means saving one hour per day in some line. As long as this is temporary: no problem!

as a fan of dineyland paris, it's just tiring to have so much hope to be so disappointed... tell yourself that during the D23, we celebrated 6000 days without ANY new attraction at the main park, it's a real shame and the same for the studios everyone really thought that a land pandora or lion king was going to be announced, but nothing, just rapunzel cups and a land frozen not succeed while in Tokyo they will have the best of what can do imagineering. And even for you, US fan, I'm sad for you because your announcements were very weak while there was also a lot of expectation. And as much to tell you right away the naughty land coco encanto will never happen and I just find it maddening on the part of disney to reveal such ambitious projects when they are not able to build a mary poppins attraction. anyway guys don't dream, as long as chapek will be CEO, there will be nothing new, no ambition, NOTHING if it's just a leveling down. And fortunately disney has excellent achievements and have done some absolute works in the past… Disney doesn't give a fuck anymore and I find it all the more disgusting since Amaro had a lot of hype fans for in the end having concept art for projects that will never succeed and limits so much the better because I don't see the relationship between animal kingdom and zootopia, moana. Because yes, d'Amaro is maybe worse than chapek, after all he also approves of all the shitty things that have happened in the last few years at disney. anyway I hope it's just a bad phase and that Disney will rise from its ashes... but it's not won 😭 (and sorry for my anglish because… you know frenchies… 😭)

Paris parks, like US parks, is directly owned & control by Disney. Anything they do there comes out of their pocket.
With Tokyo & Chinese parks, they're co-owned, meaning that they don't have to bear all the costs. That's why you see many announcements for those parks - Disney want something to show but don't want to spend too much.

Also, that Porto’s announcement was the funniest reaction to experience. Those who are local to Disneyland(Like myself) lost while everyone else was like, “…what?” For those who don’t know: Porto’s is an extremely popular family owned small chain of restaurants/bakery that serve Cuban cuisine and pastries in the Los Angeles area. What I want to know if Disney would allow Porto’s to sell affordable food at their property because I don’t see Disney allowing cookies to be sold at $0.85.

I hate to sound all like "I SAW THIS COMING WHY YOU SURPRISED??" , but I had s gut feeling that we needed to do more than just temper our expectations because all it takes is to look at how the 50th was handled and how extremely scaled back some of the projects they announced at D23 2019 and I just knew that there wouldn't be announcements left and right. The fact that we got blue sky concept art of the lands legit surprised me because, again, I wasn't even expecting a focus on future expansions because Disney is in what I like to call "POST PANDEMIC RECOVERY MODE", and between the parks being shut down, the layoffs that happened in 2020, the move of major staff to Florida and more, really, it was to be expected.
But...it's kinda hard to excuse Disney when Epic Universe just seems to be going full speed ahead with EVERYTHING not being scaled back or changed, but at the same time Disney is a whole different beast, economics wise. At the very least, I think showing us what could be done without promises of happening may be the best thing since we all have been burned by promises of new attractions and projects only to get burned when they are cancelled or extremely scaled back. So if these expansions do not go through...at least Disney can say "that was a what if, not a confirmation!"

It was quite disappointing to hear that the only things announced for Hong Kong are a new statue and the World of Frozen will be opening in the second half of 2023. Not even a specific day. I always set my expectations low for d23 especially for Hong Kong, as Hong Kong Disneyland was always not the most famous and visited Disney Park. 3 years ago, it was announced an Avengers ride will be coming to the park. I feel that the futur is more premium exclusive human size experiences where you can actually embody your favorite hero ans leave adventures. Escape rooms, live games, immersive theater, quests, adventure ropes in different theming. I feel that Disney was pushing the limit of what have been done on that with their star wars cruise. I feel Universal also has understood it with the wand system in the Harry Potter lands and with Nintendo. I feel that we could go farther on that past, they could create a story park, like evermore but within our favorite disney stories. It is extremely sad to see how they tackled this overall by just naming a few popular franchises and expecting everyone to get excited about it, even if it made no sense at how they would work in coherence to their planned location(I mean moana and zootopia in one announcement? the concept art looks like a total mess even if I would love to see the franchises represented in the parks. Encanto, Coco and... villains? I know it was a what if section but where is the logic). I really hope that Disney realizes that they need to own up to some announcements they previously made(Hong Kongs Marvel expansion, Walt Disney Studios Park transformation, Epcot transformation(I mean this one could really have had the best opportunity to say hey we're bringing Coco to Mexico, we're bringing in Encanto with a Colombia pavilion, we're still working on Mary Poppins, but nothing of the sort came close at all))

Always love the background music in your videos. These are still unprecedented times we have to consider and Disney is still in a flux about what to do now. People were unhappy with 2019's D23 and some of the projects planned then anyway, which I'm sure they scrapped or delayed what was not desired.or better ideas came along to explore. I think the blue sky ideas are a new concept for D23 or maybe it just seems new since they explicitely spelled it out this time. I'm glad you guys Down Under are getting a little Disney in your part of the world. Enjoy your cruise!

Those were canceled because of the pandemic. Why some of them weren't restarted, like Spaceship earth, I'm not sure. I don't think its fair to say they announced those too early though because nobody knew the pandemic was going to happen. Until the pandemic, those projects were going to happen. These 'blue sky' announcements are a whole other thing entirely.

I'm getting flashbacks to early 1990s "Disney Decade" plans, complete with "opening years" that never came to be. I mean, the joke is you can build three new parks out of all the planned ideas that didn't make it but that Disney is considering some fun stuff shows they're not totally giving up. One thing we know, so many ideas do end up coming to be just not the way we expect.

    • @ralelunar

The problem with the Disney Decade was that Eisner just copied other theme parks. MGM Studios was just a copy of Universal Studios. Animal Kingdom was just a copy of Busch Gardens Tampa. Whenever he tried to make something "original," they were huge flops: Disneyland Paris, California Adventure, Hong Kong Disneyland.

Ever since the miscalculations of Tomorrowland (the movie), pretty much everything Star Wars (unfortunately), and quite a few misteps when it comes to handling the parks (you know, the thing with the face of the blue magical guy that replaced the fast pass), Disney has slowly been realizing they no longer know what their guests and audience wants.
And instead of sending out surveys or asking third party companies to do reviews.
They have to bring it in house, turn it into an event where they guage audience reaction at a panel, and then call it a day.
Because "no one can do it better than Disney"
It's really sad to see they're so busy being concerned with if they can do something, that they aren't taking time to consider if they should.

I found the Parks n Resorts presentation to be as disappointing as one can get. Disney leadership, in 2022, is devoid of creativity! Chapek says the “Kingpin” of Disney is Disney+, I say… look at how Netflix, the KING of streaming is doing… they are failing., why would Disney want that? I used to watch Walt on ABC’s Wonderful World of Color / Disney on ABC and admired his creativity and vision. I went to WDW in 1975/76 and fell in love with the brand. I’ve been to every Disney park across the globe, since, more times than I can count. Living in Singapore for the past decade+ I also had an AP for HKDL and visited Shanghai and Tokyo countless times as well. While I’ve not been to Paris in a long time, IMO, the state or the US Parks is pathetic yet highly profitable. The fact that I’ve not received a dividend, since early 2020 has me fully questioning if Disney even has what it takes to get through this decade without radical, Walt-level, changes. With $DIS share price more than 1/2 of what it once traded at, they should be a ripe acquisiton target. However, a more competent corporation / leadership would never violate their fiduciary responsibility and take on that amount of debt. I’m so disheartened by the current state of The Walt Disney Company.

To be honest, all of these announcements is nothing new and RUclipsrs were the first to tell them after it was announced. However, the name for tiana’s ride kind of seems more like it’s part of the Fantasyland.
Dad: Huh, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure that sounds cool.
Mom: Is that in Fantasyland because it’s sounds like it is.
Dad: Nah, it took over a mountain that has cartoon characters of song of the south but never actually references song of the south.
Little Girl: I love Tiana in Fantasyland. Let’s go meet her.
Dad: Yeah, the name of the ride is cool in only a fantasyland aspect. But in a place like Frontierland, it doesn’t match the expirations.
Little Girl: Let’s ride Splash Mountain after all it’s a hot day.
Mom: Ok, still an interesting name. I wonder if they will change the name to be more interesting. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure sounds like it belongs in Fantasyland. Guessing, that’s what they mean by expanding beyond Frontierland by expanding the fantasy expect in Frontierland. Which of course is not that much.
Dad: Yep, let’s go ride Tron. The Tron ride is much more interesting name than the retheme of Splash Mountains name.
Everybody nodded and agreed. A little skit but kind of accurate as well. Names are the popularity and the more a name is said in a good way or in a bad way. Good ways is means it’s so popular that it’s worth expanding the land. Bad way is kind of like Galaxy edge where it’s only one and done and doesn’t have any interests in expanding because it’s not that popular yet (nor will it ever be). Hope you have a wonderful day.

Redo the road in back straight in to small world service area. Then build sidewalk around a long the railroad to back area use the bridge for entrance to large ride. Rebuild toon town false front of mickey house and other then build new lands ( villains and other)behind little mermaid keep the service road and if done right you could have a new entrance for the parade route..besides have a ride dealing with death and tge underworld might be easyer on little one if explained though toon town.the whole thing would be inside the railroad footprint.. thank you.

To be fair, what these IPs would be replacing is basically nothing.

This was a terrible expo even by the standards of recent years. Disney's been in hard times after making the disastrous acquisition of Fox which I've been saying since it was first announced was a mistake and as time goes on have been vindicated in that belief. Now the chickens are coming home to roost and after 2 years of lower attendance due to we all know what coming at the exact time they did not need a drop in revenue, the consequences of Bob Igor's final years and Bob Chapek's limited ability to deal with the problem given Disney's structure means this will likely be the normal for years to come.
