  • In the 1980s and 1990s, it wasn’t uncommon to stumble across rides and sometimes entire parks that generously helped themselves to inspiration from Disney’s theme parks.

    I've only been to a few European parks (Eftling, Phantasialand & Europa Park) but was blown away by the quality of the theming, rides and food. There's so much outside the Disney bubble that is so much better. I was delighted by Disneyland Paris, it's a beautiful park but if I had to pick one, I'd rather go back to Eftling.

      Efteling opened its fairy tale forest in 1952 and story goes that Walt Disney came to see and watch it before opening Disneyland a few years later in 1955. Who took inspiration from who? I think it goes both ways.Yet sadly enough Americans are raised to believe their things are always bigger and better, which in this case I doubt very much. Efteling is a highly themed and wonderful park, more to my taste than any other I have been to.

    It could be noted that Disney also borrowed from a lot of other parks when creating Disneyland
    As mentioned, Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen was especially inspirational for Walt. But what’s less commonly mentioned is that Rutschebanen there served as inspiration for Matterhorn in Disneyland, being a coaster that whips in and out of a mountain which also features snow caps and a waterfall

    Europa Park also has a Soarin clone :-) In defense of Europa Park though, being a ride manufacturer (Mack), some rides you see at Disney parks are manufactured by Mack and the original purpose of Europa Park actually was a product exhibit of their different ride systems, so it's not necessarily a rip off you can see at Europa Park. For example the african raft ride (recently rethemed to an Empress Sissy theme for PC reasons) existed well before the same ride system was used at Disneyland Paris for the Storybook Land boats.

    Lol. Like disney doesn’t copy things.
    They just have better lawyers.
    Fun fact.
    Disney came over to European parks like Efteling and learned from it.
    And no Fata Morgana was not inspired by Pirates but by the stories of 1001 nights tale.
    Just like Disney uses tales as inspiration for most of their work.

    So i am a huge Europapark fan and go there twice a month. And yeah times are changing. Europapark is making their own lore of the Adventure Club of Europe. New rides like Voletarium the flying theatre or piraten in batavia are all themed about the ACE with a huge amount of lore. The new coaster coming in 2024 is going to be themed about Nikola Tesla who is trying to do some experiments with the ACE. I would reccomend if you have some interest diving into that lore because i think Europapark is going into a completely new way of storytelling

  • @MuchowMedia
    @MuchowMedia Год назад +2

    I think it is funny how that changes now. The Europapark (due to being owned by a ride manufracturer) is usually the first to have new concepts. Arthur is a great example for that. And the Velocicoaster seems heavily inspired by Taron at Phantasialand.
    I hope that the Europapark will retheme or replace the Geisterschloss next and create a better ride than Disney. With Pirates they have shown that they are able to do it...

  • @Bram21
    @Bram21 Год назад +3

    Disney already lost their throne, (if they ever had it) i mean, a attraction like Fata Morgana was inspired for it’s ride system, boats passing different scenes. But the entire ride and theming is nothing like Pirates. Fata Morgana was themed as middle-eastern world. Pirates as, well you know, pirates. Nothing alike at all except for the ridesystem.

    I happen to have been stood meters away when Piraten in Batavia burned down! Also was on one of the first rides of Madame Freidenreich's on a staff preview event, absolutely delightful ride!
    Worth mentioning that Europa Park have more recently been developing their own Society of Explorers and Adventures, named the A.C.E (Adventure Club of Europe) which ties various rides in the park together, including their Flying Theatre which is very similar to Soarin'. So I think the Mack family aren't quite done copying Disney parks just yet! ;)

    You should next look at all the rides Disney was inspired by. To their credit every example I can think of they built massively improved versions but still they clearly took the idea of big thunder from over Texas, splash mountain from knotts Golden Zephyr from Blackpool and it’s hard to imagine they really came up with the layout of rock n rollercoaster without just asking for a flight of fear

    I find it interesting that some of these knock offs became classics themselves. For example Piraten von Batavia is a classic, if not it wouldn't be rebuild. I think it proves the strenght of these classic rides that they got copied so often. But the more recent rides, i don't know if they will become classics that inspire other theme parks.

    As a European who has been to a lot of European parks (including Europapark, Disney Paris, Tivoli and Gardaland) and also a few American ones (including Dollywood but not Disney World), it's true that there have been "copies". I like this video and the aspect that it seems to respect European theme parks and not just slaps a "Disney is still better"-label on them. European parks are often so much better or simply different in many aspects and also have a different focus than American parks. They don't put all the emphasis on roller coasters. Theme parks here aren't measured by how many or record-breaking roller coasters there are. It's mostly about unique rides, immersion and a mix between all kinds of rides. Of course, great roller coasters are highlights here as well, but they aren't the only ones. Rides like the Arthur ride, Voletarium or small ones like the soup bowls in Tripsdrill are amazing and often equally high valued.

This is not just an theme park phenomenon but in artistic work in general. We got words like æmultatio since the antics. We call singers also interprets because a cover is more than just a copycat. And it’s not a new phenomenon that these parks also have attractions that aren’t a Disney “copy”.
