In the late 1960s the NSWGR made a decision to scrap all steam locomotives. Because of this where there was no Diesel locomotive available or they did not have enough of them, they just closed all the branch lines affected . That is why Carcoar has no trains today. Similar to the Grenfell to Golbourne line as well.
Further closures were also caused by a lack of funding from successive governments in carrying out maintenance on the rail lines eg. Armidale to Wallangarra. Some of these lines now have to be re-opened and proper maintenance should be carried out instead of state governments wasting money
on unneeded Metro trains in the cities.

They were dirty, inefficient and labour-intensive, but I miss them! Incidentally, until the 1970s, steam railways in Finland and Angola were largely carbon-neutral, using wood for fuel. Worth remembering.

Maybe carbon neutral, but not ecologically sustainable. All those trees lost, which would have taken up carbon dioxide. Good luck with that yarn!

There was still a fair bit of steam around in the early 1970's 1970, 1971 numbers decreasing a lot in 1972 so steam hadn't all but disappeared in the late 1960's as the announcer on this video states, numbers were decreasing but I fired steamers in the early 1970's in the Newcastle and hunter valley area on coal trains, the Richmond Valley railway based at Hexham NSW used all steam right through the 1970's and well into the 1980's and South Maitland Railways based at East Greta also operated steam right through the 1970's and even into 1983 so they were around just not in the limelight.

Decommissioning of all steam locomotive represents the absolute dawn of the 2nd Industrial Revolution. Once the HYPERLOOPS becomes a reality, this would unveil the 3rd Industrial Revolution.
