I'm a 65 year old American, I've watched TV since I was 5...Hammond is one of the best television presenters ever to be on the screen. Hopefully he'll continue his journey, for his benefit as well as ours.
He was my sole reason for watching TG and GT. His enthusiasm and charisma. Sigh. Like the David Attenborough of cars
I just made a similar comment, before seeing yours. He is an amazing presenter. The way he fragments a sentence, and his style of making allegories just glues you to whatever it is he's talking about.

Richard, I know in all likelihood you will never see this comment amongst the mountain of others, so I wouldnt usually bother but I feel compelled to say thank you. Your presenting skills of putting us right there with you in the story has brought back so many forgotten memories of these sorts of holidays I had as a kid with the family, some of whom are no longer with us, making the return of those memories all the more special. Trying to sleep to make the journey go quicker, bickering with my brothers in the back of Dad's car, the excitement of pulling into the services and seeing my grandparents already there waiting for us so we could have breakfast and carry on down together, the competition of being first to point out the sea, "driving" the car on the beach on Dad's lap, playing pool and my great-grandfather beating everyone despite being in his late 80s early 90s, bonding every day for a week with cousins I'd usually go months without seeing, the donkey rides, the pier arcades and so much more. I'm sitting here as a full grown man now with a lump in my throat thinking of those wonderful times with those wonderful people, and those memories had long faded until I watched this video. You and the boys are truly a national treasure and while a lot of things in the world have gone downhill this generation, I'm glad to be of the generation that grew up watching the 3 of you 🙏
Great comment, this little clip from Richard brought back so many happy memories of holidays in Somerset with mum,dad,aunties,uncles and cousins.
Wholeheartedly agree with everything you've said here. My family has grown up sharing the adventures of this intrepid trio and admire the things that they are now putting their energies into. Thanks guys.
Wonderfully written comment. Just from taking the time to read yours and soak in Richard's story very much reminds me to appreciate those journeys and the future ones I'm able to still take with my parents. As someone in their mid-twenties i can very much empathize with Hammond and you on what those trips were like and can still feel like. Hopefully I'd be able to replicate this feeling for my own children some day. For now, however I'll just enjoy the moment and many memories I will still be able to make.

they don't feel like mates, they ARE mates and thats what makes it so amazing.
Stuff like this was the essence of TG. The silliness and the bickering was icing on the cake but this was the cake itself. Great work Hammond.

This video made me realise what made them such a dynamic presenting trio. Clarkson screamed at the world, May communicated with the car and Hammond was speaking to us.

Ya if you go back and watch the first season of Top Gear, before May was hired, they had a guy who was a mechanic/engineer, but he wasn't interesting to listen to. May brought a visual style and passion that clicked with the other two on day one. The first few seasons of Top Gear are pretty much shows about cars, but you could see the chemistry building with the guys. I think the episode where they 'jump' a double-decker bus was the beginning of what eventually became the Top Gear most people think of.

There are many archetypes, but a balance of three is where the magic lies, and they were, together, a uniquely balanced thing that created magic.
Richard Hammond is, and forever will be one of the greatest story-tellers to ever grace the small screen.
The way the man can evoke such emotion, the way he can drop you into memories of his life, make you remember places you've never been..... it is truly a superpower
This deserved so much more than a 12 minute segment, I could have listened to this story over a 60 minute TG style special. Love this.

if you're interested in Rich talking about this sort of topic i really recommend his book "On the Road: Growing Up in Eight Journeys" its the same exact energy and style in fact he even uses the same sentences in this video as he does in the book specifically the bit about trying to sleep in the car.

Oddly enough this reminds me of that time (I may be wrong but this is how I remember it:) clarkson jokes hammond can't stop at a turn and he replied back with clarkson not being able to drive in a straight road, only to clarkson reply with "atleast I didn't write a book about it" hillarious 😭

Just watched One for the road last night, you guys had me in tears, 22 years you guys have always been there, through bad days at school, break ups, lost friends, any moment I had a bad day or a struggle I would come home to put you guys on my screen and every single time without fail you all made me smile, I became a huge petrol head at a young age because of you guys and because of that my life has gone in a certain direction, I’ve met amazing people and done some amazing things all because of you guys sparking my interest and inspiring me so all I have to say is, thank you boys, thank you so so much ❤️

That description of your journey from Birmingham to Weston really hit a raw nerve. It reminded me SO much of our own family holidays at the North Sea in the 1980s. We had a few landmarks along the way. When we saw a huge factory with a budgie painted on the side of the building, we knew we were getting closer. Dad used to wake us up at around 2 am or so and we got on the road. My parents always wanted to avoid the morning traffic. The Autobahn, the Elbtunnel, the massive containers and gantry cranes of Hamburg Harbor…all etched into my mind, and my dad was always driving. And I listened to the hum of the road and whatever was on the radio.
The house we stayed at over the summer had a very long driveway with a gentle curve leading to it. When the house was literally inching into view, I always got excited about the fact that it was now officially the holidays. By that time it was usually early in the morning and the sun was coming up.
Dad passed away three days ago and this description brought back a LOT of feelings and memories.
Thank you for bringing back those memories.

Hammond, that was the classiest, most directly personal segment I've ever seen from you and I'm so very grateful for the childhood memories of yours that shaped your existence enough to see you to where you are today. You, and your two co-hosts, have entertained millions of us over the past 20+ years and I'd like to thank you for all the painstaking effort so obviously poured into it. I'll be having a gin and tonic in solidarity with you, Clarkson, and May when I (sadly but profoundly) watch the last episode of The Grand Tour. As a US Navy vet, I can think of no better salutation than a hearty "Fair Winds and Following Seas" to you, sir. Best of luck on your future adventure(s).

As a 21 year old, you guys have been there throughout all my life. My entire school career, every single friend I’ve made and lost, my first love, my first few jobs. My life has formed with you three being the only real constant. I sure am going to miss you three working together, luckily there’s a massive catalog of content to look back on. I hope you guys will continue doing well and continue to do the things you love. Thank you for making my youth just that bit better and having a part in shaping the man I am today.

8:34 - My benchmark journey growing up was the 6-hour N3, Johannesburg to Durban, drive (5 when I got my Polo 1.9 TDi 😉). An absolutely STUNNING drive across the flats of the Free State and dropping down Van Reenen's Pass into the rolling green hills of the Natal Midlands and finally ending up on the winding roads heading into Durban.
N1 and N10 down to PE from Joburg, winding through the Karoo, crossing the Gariep Dam, then dropping over the escarpment and seeing the ocean was mine. Long trip for a 6 year old kid, but so worth it when you got to spend Christmas on the beach with the cousins

always wanted to see more of SA, been around Johanesburg and cape town. spent the majority of my time not far from sun city and pilanesburg. the absolute scale and beauty of SA was what made me fall in love with the country. i felt like you were never a 20 minute drive away from somewhere which could make you stare in awe at the beauty of it.

I had two, depending on who I was with (parents divorced/remarried, and split custody of us kids). With mom, it was to La Crosse, WI to visit her parents. Roughly 2 1/2 hours, down I-35 and then to I-90. With dad, we would go up to the cabin, 3 hour drive into middle-Minnesota. I-35 to MN 371, and from there up. Vastly different scenery. Going to WI, you'd get the plains, the massive wind farms, then the bluffs as we went into the Mississippi River valley. Up North, we had trees, train tracks, and also crossed a much smaller version of the Mississippi.

53 years old here and also have very fond memories of Derek Griffiths and Brian Cant on tv as a kid. We lived in Huddersfield back then and our seaside day trip was Blackpool and who can spot the tower first. Seriously going to miss you three guys so thanks for the last 22 years of pure entertainment.
I actually went to see Play Away being filmed as a last primary school trip. I was, and still am, overcome with joy being in a studio.
Brought me to tears, I miss my father. I have fond memories of steering whilst sitting on his lap and then later being taught to drive in a Hillman.

I don't know what it is about Hammond, but his presentation style, and the way that he can pull you into his stories with his words, enthusiasm and emotive expressions is like no other. He recreates these moments in time that none of us should have any vested interest in, yet leaves us feeling like we were all there, in the moment with him.

He shared his story about how he compares his bigger journeys and measures them in his childhood journeys and started crying because I've always done that. In road trips and tours as a musician. Thinking I was the only one who did that. it was a three and a half hour trip from Upper New Hampshire to Providence Rhode Island. once every other summer, to visit my grand parents.
He described everything I also went through. Thank you hammond.

This is possibly the best 12 minutes of video you've ever done Richard. I'd love to hear Clarkson and May's stories on this same topic. You guys are legends and we hope you continue Drive Tribe as long as you feel content to bless us with car content. You men have set one hell of a bar for the car community that I doubt will ever be reached by anyone else. Thank you.
This brought back so many similar memories of me and my Dad taking me to car shows, watching the RAC rallies and I held it together to the part of you remembering sitting on your Dads knee steering. I used to love my Dad letting me steer his Ford Capri up the drive at home so many treasured memories. Hes now in a nursing home with alzheimers and I`m sat here at 55 crying like a baby because I never thanked him for giving me those memories. Loved the video and thank you for making me remember such happy times.

With the Grand Tour drawing to a close, I'm grateful Richard has this channel to keep talking to us through the lens.
Everyone must admit, a big factor of Prime Video subscriptions were due to this trio! Sad to see these chaps go but we had great years from Top Gear to Grand Tour. This is the only thing me and my 11 year old son enjoy watching together. I thank you for the many years even since my college years back in 2002!
I am 54 as well, Aug 19th… seeing Richard reflecting and re centering is fantastic, we share the same timeframes with historical events, same growth with cars.

Seeing one of my idols in my home town, on the same beach I have some of the only happy memories from my childhood, talking about how the same space shaped his happy childhood memories really is something I never thought would happen.

Sir, you and your two co-presenters may never understand the joy you brough my in my adult life. While you saw the presenter on that sand all those years ago and said "I want to do that" and did it. You then took another passion of cars and the legend of Top Gear and later Grand Tour was born. I remember watching the first season of Top gear with you, Clarkson and May...and i saw the passion you had for cars. i knew i always wanted to do something with cars, anything. After university i was very lucky to see You and the other two during your live show shortly after you left top gear but before Grand Tour.
Years passed by. Every day I wake up and I go and teach folks how to drive. I smile at the rumble of the car everyday. Thank you. Thank you sir
As a long time viewer, and now father of 3... what made me choke up watching this was thinking: I want my kids to find that SOMETHING, whatever it is... that sparks their imaginations, and joy, and passion... and I want to foster whatever it is.

Richard Hammond , not even 10 years old at that time in'78 , thought that profoundly. I'm impressed , but not all that surprised. We're blessed to have him... Clearly meant to have him. Thx for everything Richard. You've entertained and created so many memories utilizing that lens , your contribution is legendary.
Having just watched the final episode of The Grand Tour last night, watching Hammond share this look at his "beginning" brought tears in my eyes. I feel very fortunate that you had your awakening on that beach all those years ago. The joy and laughter you've brought to my friends and family over the years are well appreciated. Richard is such a consumate storyteller, it is very believable when he says he's not talking to the camera, but to the viewer.
LOL! " My head on the vinyl listening to the rumble of the prop-shaft spinning below" ! Perfectly brings back the memory of the horrible smell of the vinyl and the mechanical unsophistication of the car. He can sum up an entire era in one short sentence, Hammond is a genius!

There have been many great TV presenters and you Richard are amoungst them. You are engaging, articulate and enthusiastic which are the most important ingredients of presenting. It takes a special kind of person to not just talk to a camera, but actually reach through the lens and talk to their person, and in very rare cases, talk to their hearts. Sometimes it takes looking back at where we started to see how far we’ve come. Sometimes it takes doing something that we could only dream of doing when we started.
Richard I don't know what more to say here than thank you for sharing. This video has definitely reminded me of the family trips I used to take as a kid with my parents. Thankfully as a grown adult I can now appreciate those trips and experiences for what they were, and look forward to future ones to come. If anything it's a constant reminder to appreciate the things we wouldn't think about: the company of others, being around family, and frankly enjoying the moment. Till today I still try to sleep to make the drive feel shorter ) of course when I'm not the one driving.
Getting away from everything and simply just being out somewhere you enjoyed going with your folks is always such a palette cleanser and allows for a mental reset. Really almost allowing to forget everything that's going on around you currently. I'd hope to someday recreate this feeling and experience to a degree for my own children, much like how your father did for you and your brothers, and just how mine has done for my brother and I.
While we've never met in person I'd love to say that I enjoyed watching you and the lads different work through out my life and was and will always be what brings my dad and I together to build even more memories.

Let's start this off with I'm American. And where it all started for me was one day when I was about 5 or 6. I was flipping thur the cable channels we had and I stumbled across these 3 guys who had a really weird accent but they were driving really cool cars that I had not seen before. And the way they were talking about these cars with so much passion and excitement that it ignited a fire in me. After seeing the first top gear show I feel in love with cars. Because of you, Richard and James and Jeremy. Yall gave me a passion for cars that has grown so immensely I can't even put it into words. Thank you. Thank you for starting that fire in. Thank you for showing me that cars are more than hunks of plastic and metal. I'm 28 now and still just as madly in love with cars as the day that fire started. You james and Jeremy are my heros
It wasn't just a car show. These guys were a part of our lives. We will miss you.
You three have brought me so much joy and comfort. Your show was what bonded my wife and i, its what I watched with each one of my infant children in late hours of night. I wish you could know how much Top Gear and Grand Tour has meant to me, and how much happiness it brought into our house. Thank you all. I will miss this show more than you can ever know, most importantly I will miss you three, since you were the show and will always be.
This is why the trio where so successful, it's something that a lot of presenters just don't have, passion. Sheer and absolute passion for what he does, this is why it looks and feels so natural and drags us in to what he is feeling, seeing. You can't teach that, you either have it or you don't.
This is why I’ve loved the Grand Tour and TG. The cars and reviews were great, but it was the way the guys interacted and the stories they created together that made the magic. As a car guy, those experiences are what it’s all about.
They poured their heart's to the world and we love them for it.

Wow, time really does fly. Hammond was 8 years old and wanted to do his dream and achieved it. Here we are now that he's the circle of life and the same shoes to inspire to go after your ambitions.
This has to be the MOST nostalgic video I've ever seen. So so sad you're all departing but I understand, everyone must go their own way at some point. I don't think they'll EVER be a trio like you 3 on TV ever again.

Richard Hammond, I just wanna say thank you… thank you for reminding me why I started getting into cars and eventually starting my own RUclips channel about my projects and my passion for these amazing cars. To think it all started with car guys like you on tv when I was a lost soul at 14 years old. Thank you for being part of my journey. I look forward to your adventures with or without James and Jeremy, as well at their adventures with or without you… I wouldn’t be here without the kind and passionate car people I’ve met and learned from. My best friend said to me, "I love how you love cars". She literally enjoyed my enthusiasm and knowledge of cars. It made me feel good. My upbringing was much like this. Dad and I driving to car events or dealerships to see the new model lineups. Going on trips to the cabin. Sometimes sitting on his lap driving like I'm sure all of us did. Growing up in the late '60s and '70s my crazy uncle would buy a new car every six months. Camaro, Dodge R/T, Cadillac, and a gorgeous red Torino GT fastback I'll never forget. There was so many more including a custom pick up he made and proudly displayed in car shows. It was at one of those shows I even got to see the original Batmobile. That was a wild experience. It was just a part of me that wouldn't go away and then I eventually used that experience and enthusiasm for car photography. It was such a natural fit. Watching this video brought back so many memories that became impactful on my life. One's I wouldn't trade for the world. This was such a beautiful video and I have to thank Mr. Hammond for his contribution to the best show in history and bringing back some fond memories. Cheers.
I think it is kind of funny that Richard Hammond, one of the best known Persons in this world, worshiped by millions all around the world, envied by grown man and kids of all ages, a man that is capable to do nearly everything he wants to do...takes a step back to remember why he is doing the stuff wherefore we love to watch him do it.

I was not at ALL prepared to feel these feelings, so deeply.
I'm literally in tears from the second experience, because I know my canon car person experience was in fact the first memory that I can remember, as if it were yesterday, I'm 28 now, but I was 3 at the time also in August, but in 1999, we just moved to what would become my the home of my entire coming of age. My Dad came home in a new car, it was a Mercedes Benz C220, black on tan. I remember saying, "What is that!?" and he said, "It's a Mercedes Benz", and I spent the next (what felt like hours but was probably) the next few minutes inspecting it, touching it, wanting to know everything I could about it. I was hooked from that moment, I could tell you what kind of car was driving by based on the headlights at night alone.
I didn't experience something like that again until I unknowingly stumbled onto a replay of the 2007 Chinese GP when I was home sick and saw a driver that kind of looked like me, and in middle school when we had gotten Direct TV, and I came across this show featuring a Mitsubishi Starion, a BMW 635csi, and a Jaaaaguar XJS I can't believe the story arch here, and that this Trio's time together has come to an end, and probably not just an end for now.
This one touches the heart.

Richard, I'm just a couple of years younger than you. I didn't have an aspiration to be an entertainer or presenter, but like you, my love for cars and trucks really kicked in around '77, when my dad took me to the first car show, and I've been a gear head every since. New cars don't really excite me much, but the cars of our youth and our parents' era have always fascinated me, even to kind of wanting to finding the same models of vehicles my dad drove us around in whilst growing up, even some of the ones that were rattle traps, if I had the money to do so.
People, be responsible take care of your duties, but never stop dreaming and pursuing them and your aspirations. Even if you don't and can't make all of them come true, even if you get to Make one or two of them come true, enjoy the adventures during the pursuit, because you might find success in something you never dreamed of a long the way.
Derek Griffiths is a hero to many. Great presenter.
Going to miss you guys on The Grand Tour. You three together were the best. I still watch older Top Gear episodes and specials…last Grand Tour was sad but so great and you deserved this great fairwell

Richard Hammond has always been special for me, whether it was watching old TG as a child, listening to him talk about anything and anything on the radio or watching Richard Hammond's Blast Lab to learn utterly meaningless facts, he's an incredible presenter that appeals to all ages and any interest, the way he tells stories has always been so engaging and colourful like you are there with him!
I will miss The Grand Tour but the memories that Richard helped to create will be there forever and thank god DRIVETRIBE exists and he's still doing his own thing on here.

Hearing Richard talk all about this really got me thinking back to my holidays down to Norfolk and the journey there. Every journey now i'm going to to think the same thing now and that is "is it longer than that." but none of them will be as good as that... And i like that. I Miss those journeys and i hope to share them one day with my future children.
