#DOAG . Death of a Game is a series dedicated to uncovering the mysteries surrounding the death of a game or company. nerdSlayer defines the term "death" in the context of the show as either... 1. Literally dead. 2. Had a mass exodus of players and never recovered (expectations etc). 3. The company ceased to exist. We follow a timeline of events, to uncover clues concerning why a game or company doesn't do well, and attempt to put it all together at the end for a deduction explaining how or why the game failed based on the evidence gathered.

Thats because Cartoon Network is a shadow of its former self. It stopped supporting new creative animators and introducing new cartoons in exchange for nostalgia bait with bad remakes and reboots. This game will never leave my heart.
It had so much to offer to those who were growing out of their pre-teen phase, that it was my first exposure to non-asian anime-style games.
I don’t even remember when I even discovered Fusionfall as I live in the Philippines (possibly the old trailer on RUclips), but I was so hyped that I pushed myself to play the free trial multiple times just to experience it.
I looked up the website on the old CN Asia for info on FusionFall, which lead me to a coming soon page for South-East Asia.
This game influenced me so much that my internal mindscape was build on the world it, which has since become an original concept for a story I write.
Heck, my Avater is based on my initial Custom Character.

Believe it or not, my dad was one of the project leads of fusionfall. So, fairly recently (2-3 months ago) he talked about how he occasionally watched videos like this, and this one in particular, unlike most videos talking about FF, is largely accurate. He also expressed a disdain towards the ending part of the script, primarily for the criticism of the heavy copyright enforcement from cartoon network. The primary reason CN shut them down was actually due to usage of ripped assets from base fusionfall, which although legally sound, I personally think your argument of it being kind of an asshole move to be wholly fair. Regardless, seeing someone talk about something my dad tells me about in stories from his past from another perspective is extremely interesting. Good video 👍.

  • @ZombieChesseDip

I enjoyed Fusionfall, but are we not gonna talk about how dark it all was?!
Ed and the Kankers were missing,
The moon base has fallen leaving the knd without their supreme leader and down potentially thousands of operatives,
At least one of the powerpuff girls was missing
Fosters was turned into a fuse nest to say nothing of the friends inside,
Megas was turned into a modern art piece,
The omnitrix was busted leaving Ben largely powerless,
Most of this was in the future timeline yes, but the implication that a good chunk of your favorite characters were either dead or worse was pretty freaky. Hell, I probably Missed a few things! This was when CN properties were very aware of each other, so it was probably worse!

This is really late but when you started the original game (not the academy version) Fusion Buttercup is the first one you fight along with Dexter in the future- after you finish the mission, you're transported to the fallen tree house in sector v. In ur mission journal, your character makes a note that you defeated fusion Buttercup but you don't know if Dexter was able to escape. Sector V has a small monument where they show the 'fallen heroes' and if u notice- Dexter is there.
So quite literally from the jump they KILLED OFF one of the main characters as soon as you start the game 😭😭😭
Also in the past, Buttercup is the one missing but in the future, you see that she's the only one who actually survived :')

Through all the hardships, the ups and downs, the victories and setbacks, the community is still there to ride it out. I had hoped that seeing all these fangames would make Cartoon Network's big wigs look into trying their hand at another MMORPG, but that's most likely wishful thinking on my part. Until some divine intervention happens, and CN opts to try their hand at FusionFall 2 (or something in its spirit), I'll happily play on the fangames which are done with love and respect for not only the game that brought many of us together, but to the legacy of Cartoon Network.

I never played _FusionFall,_ but I was there, watching the CN website, when it came about and I was intrigued. There's something about exploring the *Cartoon Network* world that fascinates me even now, particularly in a way that had the characters interacting and establishing relationship dynamics. I was quite fond of the art style too; more so for pushing everything to be more visually cohesive, which made it feel like a unique entity.
This was also during the time of the _Toon City_ bumpers on CN, which were an ingenious way making all the disparate neighbourhoods feel like part of one whole location. I just have a _love for the mundane in extraordinary worlds_ and having Prof. Utonium search for his car keys, while Ed devours his groceries embodies that notion perfectly for me. 😂

  • @Poppleworks
    @Poppleworks Год назад +1

Hey! I'm a member of the community formerly known as Poppleworks. I've since left the community but I wanted to add some further detail to help out this story, as I'm a huge fan of this series:
So on the topic of post-Grigon content, it's worth mentioning that the CN devs really did attempt to add what they could to the game. There were six key aspects:
    1. The Academy was this insane move pulled by the dev team, ripping out the entire first four levels of the game and changing the way players leveled up. It used to be that each Nano received would grant you a new level, but in the Academy era you could pretty much receive any Nano at any point, with the first four being distributed to later parts of the game. Buttercup, for example, used to be the first- now, she's available at level 15.
The Academy was also rather exposing, as it showed it was mainly a marketing move for the network's current programming. Whereas older/ending shows were featured prominently in the Future, this new take featured Ben 10, Generator Rex, Adventure Time, and the tragically short-lived Sym-Bionic Titan. This was the first time you saw the effect of not having Grigon, as most new characters completely lacked cel-shading.
It also sort of messed up the game's plot but justified it being an MMO, if that makes sense? The idea behind the Future was that you were this "chosen one" who could save the world by going back in time, but the Academy was written to take place after the chosen one already did that, and your training was a result of better planning by the Guides. Super weird lore detail there, but now it made sense why there were so many other people around.
    2. With a looser Nano system, leveling became way easier. Like, you could grind for a bit in the game's first few levels and be able to dominate probably the first half of the game's combat. But it also resulted in code Nanos, where you would have to type in a code on the website to redeem them in-game. These Nanos also lacked cel-shading, but were themed to shows not actually present in the base game- Gumball and Regular Show. (Adventure Time also had code Nanos but their characters were actually added in.)
    3. The Birthday Bash was this big anniversary celebration for the game, sort of a tease for what was to come- though, in retrospect, it seems they were simply offloading models they didn't have finished. They placed a giant birthday cake structure in a central hub and had a ton of new NPCs standing around. These NPCs all had official 2D art done, but again- no cel-shading on most of them, and some even lacked voice lines. It was even at the point where some lacked animation entirely. The Bash came and went, but a few characters were placed in their spots- though they lacked any purpose whatsoever, as their missions never made it into the game. Johnny Bravo, Zak Saturday, and the Sym-Bionic Titan got Nano missions though, so that's something?
    4. Code items were done weekly, many of them existing post-Grigon. You'd see a code on the website's main page advertising something like the newest episode of Ben 10, and the item would be related to that. Again, not everything was cel-shaded. Though Firebreather had a really dope dragon costume.
    5. The FusionFall Adventures were the content drops the devs felt comfortable doing, but they were admittedly not great. They were three show-specific mission lines themed to Adventure Time, Chowder, and Ben 10 Ultimate Alien. Lots of really cool ideas, but the missions were tragically harder than they needed to be. It really felt like the new devs were trying to work with a system they didn't understand, from both a platforming and combat perspective. Flapjack got something akin to this, but they never finished his plotline past one mission.
    6. There were some other content drops, particularly for Ben 10, Johnny Test, Johnny Bravo, Toonami, and Adventure Time, but one of these missions (a Nano mission for Ben 10's Rath) was infamous and set a low standard for these. Bravo and Test both got Nanos but outside of special events they were kinda useless. The AT and Toonami stuff were truly just items.
In other words, once Grigon was out the game fell apart and the team was basically saving face by pretending they had more in the can than they actually did. That's when Devan, the leader of FF Retro, began working on "Project: Revive." Project R was a pitch to save the game, essentially, and it damn near worked. This guy built a huge reputation learning how to hack the original game, and used that knowledge to create test builds for new weapons, outfits, and areas. There was a dev in contact with him who wanted to give him a chance, but ultimately that ship sailed and Project R had to be shelved. Then, of course, it evolved into FF Legacy, a republishing of the original game with some added content.
Then FF Retro took that spot, allowing Legacy to become this distinctly unique take on FF built from scratch with both games developed under the same team. The DMCA hit them roughly *eight years* after Project R, pretty much the same year they aimed to release a Legacy demo.
After Legacy, there were many attempts to continue the concept with new teams. Very few still exist.
I was part of a project called Rebirth, but our project leader was revealed to be a [not-nice person towards minors] and we kicked him out publicly. We changed the name to re:SPAWN and I ended up becoming the project head through process of elimination. I was very clueless (I was only head writer prior to this with no development knowledge), and after over a year we collectively decided that my ideas were way too big for a small team to handle. I left when another team member threatened to quit, and I haven't touched it since. Unfortunately that team eventually disbanded themselves, though most joined another project:
Devan's team had nearly brought on a super talented dude named Soul prior to the DMCA, but were not able to in time. This kept him exempt, and he was able to start up a brand new team of artists. Unlike us, they kept their presence basically unknown- with access to assets from Legacy, they had a bit of a template to base original content off of and blew us out of the water, quite frankly. There was never exactly nice relations, I would say? We were going to collaborate but the project head before me refused, and after that a few of their current members just came at us personally in various ways. Most of them are super wonderful people but equally disappointed in those few. Still, the game looks to be coming together nicely.
Soul's game began as "Worlds Collide," which was the title of a mange used to provide backstory on the beta build of the game. It was pretty much outdated for the game's public release, since Ben had to be aged up for marketing.
Anyway, MultiVersus comes along and uses "WORLDS COLLIDE" in a trailer, and suddenly they need to call themselves something different. After all, a huge theory for why Legacy got DMCA’d was because CN was trying out a new branding for their older shows, “Cartoon Network Legacy.” And that's how Saturday Morning Invasion happened.

Also, another comment hi, im gonna point out some mistakes and some other stuff in the video, for the comments here
    > There were NOT 40 nanos AT LAUNCH, but rather 36 nanos. As the game updated the roster did rise up to around 50+ nanos, and in Retro, there are 40 nanos. Speaking original game however, only 36 Nanos at launch.
    > You mispelled XPCGamer´s credit as "XPVGamer".
    > I feel like a lot of important updates or history from FF is sorely lacking here. Would have been nice to cover those, just a thought.
    > FusionFall Retro and Legacy were both developed by the same group of fan developers, under the umbrella of "FusionFall Universe". There were no other FusionFall fan projects going at the time. This story alone has a lot of red herrings and history, but case and point CN made a project that had a similar name to FF Legacy and they found the projects that way.
    > OpenFusion also has public servers online for people to play in, not JUST private servers. It has a version of the game from 2010 and the Academy version from 2011 (which was weirdly missing from here, since it was a big thing that upset a lot of the community, killing it more)
    > Retrobution wasnt just teased, but its actually out now and you can play it RIGHT NOW thru our discord server. Re:Start is still in development but its looking very promising!
Overall though, great video despite the missing or incorrect info. Thank you so much for showing everyone how cool FusionFall is!

The only reason i knew about Fusionfall was because i was a moderator for the forums for CN asia as my first job. I always thought it was a waste that the game was never released worldwide, as it would undoubtedly have a bigger audience. I loved the designs for the teenaged CN characters (had a huge crush on dexter lol). I remembered that i wanted to collect all the KND nanos but the game sadly died

Some time ago I stumbled upon your channel and saw some games that I was really invested in and that you covered (namely Guns of Icarus and Hyper Scape) and now, after stumbling again, you have done one on Fusion Fall and I'm just astonished. I should've subscribed back then but now I'm really forced to because of this. Also, I suggested back then on the Hyper Scape video to do one on Roller Champions, which hadn't come out yet. Right now, it has been launched but I sense it's going the same path as Hyper Scape. So I stand by that suggestion.
Other than that, thank you for your work and keep pumping out bangers like this one! (even though it's at the cost of some games which I am very interested in)

The reason of the DMCA takedown for FF retro/Legacy isn't started by CN. It was from a very heated "fan" that they thought the devs were ignoring his requests for the game despite there were many people wanting other things too.
So this fan (I don't know the name of atm) reported several times to CN that the devs were making money off of retro. CN were okay of FF retro/legacy existing along that it doesn't make money off from it and the devs were okay about it. But since this fan lied to CN about it, CN sent a dmca to the team and the rest is history.
But the fan is still stalty about the devs and targeted one of them in one of completely different game they were working on. But I haven't heard much about that, but I hope this brings more info for the fan games

This game was legitimately ahead of its time. Think about it, it was an unconventional MMO that traded away the traditional active battling in exchange for focusing on gunplay. A variety of different weapon types and builds, involving companions (the nanos) that all gave you different effects, combined with platforming and movement challenges.
That's pretty much what Destiny and other looter shooters are today. This game came out before Borderlands, even. They were onto something, seriously.

Beta FF player here, good video with the stuff you mentioned (such as performance issues, lack of end-game content) definitely hampering it, though there's some things that weren't discussed that I feel are worth mentioning:
    * Early on in FFs life a system was present to limit how often you played. You'd start out being able to get 100% of Fusion Matter (XP & the currency needed to change a Nano's power) from missions, monsters & Infected Zone races, which would decrease to 50% after a few hours, then to 0% a few hours later. You'd have to wait a couple hours before you could gain full FM again. This might've also applied to Taros (main currency) too but I don't remember for sure. Thankfully this was eventually removed.
    * F2P players weren't just locked to the Future but also 2 character slots as well, with the final 2 being sub only.
    * Speaking of the Future on February 16 2011 this was replaced with the Academy, a glorified tutorial area, and a move that was very unpopular with fans (myself included), so much so that FF Retro opted to use the Future instead of the Academy.
    * Dungeons (Fusion Lairs) weren't repeatable if you didn't have its appropriate mission or weren't partnered with someone who did. This included Lord Fuse's Lair. Because of this many players never turned in the final mission just so they could fight Fuse again.
