  • Another fly pattern popular the Great Smoky Mountains, the Apple Green Caddis Emerger is an excellent spring pattern to try whenever the green caddis flies are out. This simple caddis nymph is an easy to tie fly and can be varied a bit with color of dubbing and CDC wing. If you're going to spend any time in the trout waters of the GSMNP, this one should definitely be in your box.
    Hook: Curved nymph #12-18
    Thread: Brown 6/0 or 8/0
    Weight: 0.015 diameter
Tail: White McFlylon or any synthetic fiber
Body: Green apple dubbing, natural or synthetic
Wing: CDC, white, light brown or light dun
    Hackle: Partridge, natural gray
Savage Flies is a project with the mission of encouraging and teaching fly tying to as many people as possible. The channel is named after one of my western Maryland homewaters, the Savage River. I've been uploading at least three new videos a week (usually Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday).
Thanks for stopping by. Please let me know in the comments if you have any tips or tricks that could help me or anyone else watching.

Very nice fly. Not familiar with the McFlylon material. I need to look that one up. Very enjoyable video. Thank you.

Rabbit is super useful. I also use natural Australian possum (underbelly). (I'm Australian ). It's similar and beautiful to use in many situations-wet and dry. :-)

I just watched this tie-up, it is great looking fly. I finally got my book out of the GSMP. The hook shape really adds to the look of the fly. Not sure what size and style hook you are using. Thanks a heap!!

Thanks James! This looks to be a generic "competition" curved/scud hook. Without watching the video again, I'd guess it's a size 12 or 14.

    Matt,
Is that GSMP book you're using available on Amazon? Really enjoying this series you've got going. Thanks.

James- it is. Looks like it's also available for a Kindle, but I kind of like hard copy tying books better. You can find it on Amazon at read.amazon.com/kp/embed?asin=B00NQCVTDG&preview=newtab&linkCode=kpe&ref_=cm_sw_r_kb_dp_TwxgFb034EDJM. Thanks for the note! -Matt

What kind of hackle pliers are you using? They look like they work well.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  4 года назад

Jason- I'm not sure what they're called but you can find them on Amazon by searching for Riverruns Hackle Pliers. They work great when you only have a tiny bit of feather to wrap. Here's a link: www.amazon.com/Riverruns-Fly-Flies-Display-Wrapping/dp/B075J8MKC8

Definitely pick up some CDC Mike; it's a great material to play around with. I'd start with a basic tan and it'll cover most of your needs. (I make a CDC elk hair caddis that is a killer here in Maryland.) :-)
