  • "Lip Service", the flip side of "Little Green Thing", was so popular that it would become a standard at Seattle dances. Most local bands had more than a few Dave Lewis compositions in their repertoire. Shortly thereafter, The Nitesounds, who were the house band at the Tolo House night club, would record the classic "Get Clean". Members of The Nitesounds would later form Emergency Exit. Even though Schmidt Beer was brewed in Saint Paul, Minnesota, it was very popular among college students because the "Sport Pack" contained twelve of a possible twenty-one different cans and was priced at $1.89.

Ah, "Animal Beer"...a low-brow beer drinking friend of mine still speaks of it. Not sure if we can still get that stuff here in the area, nor do I want any! I used to see Dave Lewis Trio at the Embers in West Seattle. Harbor Ave. SW, I think.

When G. Heileman bought the Rainier Brewery, they began producing Schmidt in Seattle. Even though Rainier would feature only three of the original can designs, the amazing "Animal Beer" phenomenon would take hold in the eighties. Without any support from Heileman, Schmidt would become a best seller in Washington state. I remember seeing Dave Lewis also in a West Seattle club called the Climax (aka Riverside Gardens).
